Boeing and ALC finalize order for 787s and Next-Generation 737s

December 8, 2011

Boeing 787-881 N7874 (ZA004) (msn 40693) BFI (Rick Schlamp), originally uploaded by Airliners Gallery.

Boeing (Chicago) and Air Lease Corporation (ALC) (Los Angeles) have finalized an order for four 787-9 Dreamliners. ALC also exercised options for four Next-Generation 737-800s. The order, with a list-price value of more than $1.2 billion, marks the completion of an agreement announced during the Paris Air Show in June.

The airplanes join the 74 Next-Generation 737-800s and five 777-300 ER (Extended Range) airplanes that ALC currently has on order.

The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner is a slightly larger version of the 787-8 and will carry 250-290 passengers on routes of 8,000 to 8,500 nautical miles (14,800 to 15,750 kilometers). The 787 provides airlines with incredible fuel efficiency, resulting in exceptional environmental performance. The airplane uses 20 percent less fuel than today’s similarly sized airplanes. It also will travel at a speed of March 0.85, which is similar to the speed of today’s fastest wide-body airplanes.

The order increases the number of 787-9s on order to 270 airplanes from customers located all over the world. The 787 Dreamliner family, including the 787-8 and 787-9, has accumulated a total of 825 orders.

Thomas Cook Airlines (Thomas Cook.com) (UK) (Manchester) had an incident at Manchester on April 29, 2011 involving one of its Airbus A321s. The accident report has now been issued by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB).

According to this report by Mail Online, “223 passengers on board narrowly avoided disaster after the captain miscalculated its weight by 17 tons.

The Airbus A321 was due to fly from Manchester airport to Heraklion in Crete when the captain was asked for its takeoff weight – and read off the wrong figure.

As a consequence the aircraft took off without enough thrust or speed which could have caused the pilot to lose control, endangering all those on board.

Luckily, the pilot actually flying the plane noticed that something was wrong, and made adjustments which averted disaster.”

Boeing machinists union ratifies the new contract

December 8, 2011

Boeing 787-881 N787BA (msn 40690) (ZA001) PAE (Brandon Farris), originally uploaded by Airliners Gallery.

Boeing’s (Chicago) largest labor union Wednesday (December 7) ratified a new four-year contract extension, ensuring the upcoming re-engined 737 MAX will be built in Washington State at Renton. The contract ratification likely also ends Boeing’s dispute with the National Labor Relations Board to open a second 787 production line at Charleston, SC.

Boeing issued the following statement:

“Boeing applauded the decision by members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) to approve a four-year contract extension. The agreement covers employees represented by the union in Washington, Oregon and Kansas, and extends the contract to September 2016.

The vote ratifies an agreement between the company and union that builds on an emerging spirit of cooperation and collaboration, and places production of the 737 MAX in Renton .

Boeing announced last week that the company would produce the 737 MAX in the existing Renton facility if IAM members ratified the tentative agreement.

To date, Boeing has received more than 700 commitments from customers for the 737 MAX. The new airplane is expected to enter service in 2017.

The contract calls for annual wage and pension increases in each of the four years of the agreement along with a one-time ratification bonus of $5,000, which employees will receive December 15.

It also introduces an incentive pay plan for hourly employees based on performance to metrics tracking safety, quality and productivity.

Health care plan changes include improvements in key benefits for IAM-represented employees, along with modest cost increases reflecting a desire to make benefits more comprehensive while moving toward a market-based payment plan that shares costs between the company and employees.

The agreement also establishes a Joint Council for the company and union to regularly discuss issues including workforce, market, competition and performance.”

Polynesian Blue is rebranded as Virgin Samoa

December 7, 2011

Polynesian Blue (polynesianblue.com) (Pacific Blue Airlines) Boeing 737-8FE WL ZK-PBF (msn 33799) SYD (John Adlard) (renamed Virgin Samoa), originally uploaded by Airliners Gallery.

The Government of Samoa (Apia) and joint venture partner, Virgin Australia group of airlines, today (December 7) unveiled a new brand and livery for the country’s national airline – Virgin Samoa.

According to the airline, “The new brand and aircraft livery delivers a fresh, contemporary and sophisticated look, consistent with its partner Virgin Australia but with a uniquely Samoan flavor; featuring elements such as a palm tree motif on the fuselage; the words “airline of Samoa” under the window line near the front doors; and a specially designed tatau pattern on the engines.

Samoan master tattooist, Tuifa’asisina Tulouena Sua, originally developed this unique design to represent the coming together of Polynesian Airlines and Virgin Australia to form Polynesian Blue. As we now move into an even brighter future together as Virgin Samoa we felt it important to include a respectful reference to our culture and our past”.

Virgin Samoa’s aircraft, named Tapu’itea, will enter into service in its new livery and with an upgraded interior the first quarter of the 2012 calendar year.

The launch of the Virgin Samoa brand comes at the same time as the airlines formerly known as Pacific Blue Airlines and V Australia adopt the Virgin Australia brand; merging what was three separate airline brands into a single consistent identity as Virgin Australia.

Czech Airlines to close its Slovakia operation

December 7, 2011

Czech Airlines-CSA Boeing 737-55S OK-EGO (msn 28475) ZRH (Rolf Wallner), originally uploaded by Airliners Gallery.

Czech Airlines-CSA (Prague) is dropping its Bratislava operation immediately. The company was using Boeing 737-500s to fly to Amsterdam, Larnaca and Paris (CDG).

CSA is expected to retire its remaining Boeing 737-500s.

The company issued the following statement:

“Czech Airlines will no longer operate its scheduled flights from Bratislava and will discontinue air service to Poprad and Žilina. This decision is based primarily on financial reasons. The Airline has decided to take this step due to Slovak passengers’ declining interest in using the service, and the dropping bookings for the first quarter of next year. The decision was accelerated by the illegal protest of some of Czech Airline’s pilots, the announced strike readiness, and the need to ensure sufficient capacity on scheduled flights operated from Prague.

Czech Airlines is abandoning its unprofitable activities, but continues to look for new opportunities. For example, to Russia and Ukraine, it is dispatching an additional twenty flights per week this winter. There are also new destinations in the flight schedule, in the form of the long-haul flights of Etihad, and on 18 December, the first aircraft will be dispatched on the Baku route. Czech Airlines continues to have a presence on the Slovak market, as its service to Košice will carry on in line with the current winter flight schedule.

Czech Airlines announced capacity reductions on individual routes and the discontinuation of operations on certain routes last month, in its letter to the unions and to all employees. It is a step whereby Czech Airlines is responding to market developments and the growing crisis in Europe.”

Delta Air Lines buys into Gol

December 7, 2011

Gol Transportes Aereos Boeing 737-8EH WL PR-GGY (msn 37599) BFI (Nick Dean), originally uploaded by Airliners Gallery.

Delta Air Lines (Atlanta) has acquired a minority share in Gol Linhas Aéreas Inteligentes S.A., the parent of Gol Transportes Aereos and VARIG (2nd).

Gol issued the following statement:

“Gol Linhas Aéreas Inteligentes S.A., the largest low-cost and low- fare airline in Latin America, in compliance with CVM Instruction 358/2002 (“CVM Instruction 358″), hereby informs its shareholders and the market in general that it signed a binding agreement involving the acquisition by the U.S. company, Delta Air Lines, Inc. of a strategic minority interest of US$100 million of GOL ́s preferred shares.

About the Investment:

Delta Airlines Inc. will invest US$100 million in exchange for ADSs representing Gol’s preferred shares through the issuance of preferred share with an issue price of R$22.0 per share. The total capital increase will be up to R$280 million (US$150 million), including the subscription rights for all Gol ́s shareholders. Gol’s Board will deliberate on December 21, 2011 to resolve on the capital increase.
In the context of the investment, Gol’s controlling shareholder agreed to elect a Delta representative to the Company’s Board of Directors as long as Delta holds at least 50% of the ADSs acquired in the investment, among other conditions. Delta agreed, for a period of 12 months, not to sell the acquired ADSs (lockup) and not to acquire any further Gol shares , including in the form of ADSs (standstill), without Gol’s consent.

Brazilian law limits the maximum number of preferred shares that can be issued by Gol to 50% of the Company’s total capital. As a result, Delta’s investment is structured as follows:

1.Gol’s controlling shareholder will sell ADSs representing Gol ́s preferred shares to Delta against payment of US$100 million. At the same time, Gol’s controlling shareholder will undertake to reinvest this amount in a capital increase to be simultaneously approved by the Company; and

2. The amount of the capital increase will be up to R$280 million, equivalent to the issuance of preferred share with an issue price of R$22.0 per share given that the amount of capital increase to be subscribed by the controlling shareholder, according to its pre-emptive rights, is an amount of US$100 equivalent in dollar, less taxes and other charges incurred by the controlling shareholder in the context of the transfer of the ADSs to Delta . GOL’s controlling shareholder will use the proceeds from the sale of the ADSs to Delta to subscribe the Company’s shares issued on the capital increase.

The controlling shareholder will not receive any economic benefit from the transaction. Pre- emptive rights in regard to the capital increase will be granted to all Gol shareholder, including ADSs holders. More detailed information on the capital increase, including the issued price for the preferred shares and ADSs, the terms and mechanisms for the exercise of pre-emptive rights, and the record date will be disclosed promptly after the Gol Board of Directors’ Meeting to be held on December 21, 2011.”

Sol del Paraguay (Asuncion) is making Paraguayans proud. Paraguay once again has a new international flag carrier besides TAM Airlines (Transportes Aéreos del Mercosur S.A.).

The upstart operated its first scheduled domestic passenger flight between Asuncion and Ciudad de Este on November 14, 2011.

The launching of the first international route came a week later on November 21, 2011 when the company launched a new route linking Asuncion with Buenos Aires (Ezeiza).

The new airline commenced operations initially with three Fokker 100s. The three F100s are named “Ypacaraí Lake”, “Itapúa Poty” and “Heroes of the Chaco”.

The airline intends to expand to other cities in South America and eventually to Miami with larger aircraft.

Formerly operated by Mexican Click, this Fokker F.28 Mk. 0100 (Fokker 100) XA-TCM (msn 11320) prepares at Mexico City for its delivery flight to new operator Sol del Paraguay Lineas Aereas (Asuncion) which means “Sun of Paraguay Airlines” in English.

Previously Líneas Aéreas Paraguayas (LAP) – Air Paraguay was founded in 1963 to be the flag carrier of Paraguay. Since LAP was an unprofitable government company, attempts to privatize it were not successful and LAP was shut down in 1994.

Ryanair Ahead of the Game, Again

Whether it’s removing all but one lavatory, offering inflight porn entertainment or putting in standing-type seating, I could devote my entire column to the airline industry’s poster child for doing the most outrageous things, but I’ll limit myself to two paragraphs. The idea of only one toilet for up to nearly 200 passengers appears to be coming to fruition, and Ryanair’s CEO Michael O’Leary is optimistic that this’ll allow him to squeeze six more seats on his airplanes. His idea to charge for toilet use has apparently been dropped, but there appears to be no legal obstacle to removing two of the three on board the 189-seat Boeing 737s the Irish carrier operates. O’Leary continues to press Boeing to have the aircraft type certified to carry 195 passengers, however, saying it would result in fare reductions of 5%. He also caused a stir by announcing his intention to offer inflight pornography for a fee, available on passengers’ own video devices, not on seatbacks. The idea is a year away, but on the weekend after Thanksgiving, a First Class passenger (and from the state with the largest Mormon population, Utah, no less) was arrested and criminally charged upon arrival in Boston when he was caught viewing child pornography on a flight from Salt Lake City to Boston. This is the same month Qantas was showing the sexually explicit French documentary “The Female Orgasm Explained” on its video on demand “Edge Channel”. So Ryanair won’t be the first.

And again

Speaking of stand-up seating, it too made the news when passenger Arthur Berkowitz claimed he had to stand on a seven hour US Air flight from Anchorage to Philadephia recently. A 400+ pound passenger was assigned a seat next to him on the packed airplane and boarded at the last minute. There was simply no room for both. The flight attendants were apologetic, and the obese passenger agreed, saying “I’m your worst nightmare.” The flight took off, but Berkowitz, who paid $800+ for his ticket, said he had to stand for virtually the entire flight. He claims he was unable to even buckle his seat belt, in his telling the story to consumer website www.elliot.com. Well, Ryanair is just ahead of the game, but alas it’s profitable, having carried 75 million passengers last year. Now all this may seem amusing, but passengers were anything but tickled when a Riga-bound Ryanair flight had to return to London’s Stansted Airport because the cockpit window was loose. The crack Ryanair team patched it up with, what else, duct tape, and off it went. Ryanair claimed the patch-up was legal, but it sure caused concern among the passengers.

The Clampetts are Back

Many years ago in my previous life at American Airlines, we experienced what was called the Clampett summer. It was an especially good year for travelers since fares had plunged to record levels and frequent flyer bonuses were triple, as airlines scrambled to recover from a strike. As a result, many people flew for the first time. The stories about people unfamiliar with airplane sounds and equipment, to say nothing of etiquette, abounded. This all came to mind when I read about Vietnam Airlines passenger Nguyen Duc Duy who recently tried to open the window on the Airbus A321 while the Hanoi-bound plane was taxiing for takeoff from Ho Chi Minh City. Instead, he opened the emergency exit door, and the slide deployed. The aircraft had to be swapped out, causing a long delay. He’ll never do that again. The same thing happened last July with another passenger who claimed he “was curious”. Criminal charges were filed in the earlier case, and this one was expected to be treated the same. Like my mother used to say, “If you don’t know what it is, don’t touch it!” So there!

Not a Happy Ending

American Airlines losing Jack the cat last summer caused a stir among social media netizens. On August 25, Jack, in his container, was checked in at New York’s JFK Airport for the flight to Los Angeles by his owner, Karen Pascoe. Before it could be loaded however, baggage handlers noticed the container was empty. The story went viral and the feline even had his own Facebook page: “Jack the Cat is Lost in AA Baggage at JFK”. The airline, forced to take increasingly proactive action, hired a pet detective (I had no idea they even existed), placed water and food in the cargo area and thoroughly searched for Jack while tens of thousands awaited Jack’s fate online. The cat was found on October 25 in poor health and reunited with his owner, but sadly Jack passed away from on November 7 from the trauma and exposure. He had fallen through the ceiling tiles in the customs area. The Facebook page has evolved into an everlasting memorial to Jack.

On a Lighter Note

Speaking of cats, meanwhile, Taiwanese carrier EVA Air, is introducing Hello Kitty jets, dedicated to the famous Japanese white female cat with a bow. The first of three Airbus A330-300s feline aircraft debuted on October 25. They will be used on flights between Taipei and Sapporo. The Hello Kitty jets were originally introduced in 2005, but this is a new generation. See pictures and more details here: http://worldairlinenews.wordpress.com/2011/10/27/eva-air-introduces-a-new-generation-hello-kitty-logojet/

Extortion in the Air or on the Ground?

It was not so funny when Austrian airline Comtel Air landed at Vienna for fuel enroute from Amristar India to Birmingham, England, and passengers were forced to cough up enough money for the airline to buy fuel for the rest of the trip in sort of a jet age “holdup”- $31,000 worth. The choice was to pay up or get off. Initially passengers refused, causing a six hour standoff, and the flight episode drew out to more than 15 hours. Those without enough cash were escorted in small groups to airport ATM Machines to withdraw money. The story made worldwide news. Comtel Air shut down shortly thereafter, stranding many more. At least these people made it back. The airline claims the travel agent never sent them the money for the flight.

Crew Members Are Not Immune Either

Getting robbed on an airplane is not new. An Air France flight attendant was arrested a couple of years ago for regularly stealing business class passengers’ valuables and currency on overnight flights from Paris to Tokyo as they slept. But crew members can be victims too. Icelandair’s flight 631 was on its way from Reykjavik to Boston when a passenger decided to steal money from a flight attendants’ purse. Caught red handed, he bolted to the lavatory where he flushed the money, about $300, down the toilet. He was arrested upon arrival, pleaded innocent (“I was just using the bathroom”), but the airline was able to recover the currency when it drained the sewage tanks after landing. Not a pretty picture.

…Nor This

If the picture of the bluish money on the ramp at Boston did not make you squeamish, then consider the North Carolina couple who were horrified to discover cockroaches crawling out of air vents and overhead bins on their AirTrans flight from Charlotte to Houston last summer. They took movies (no doubt you can find them on YouTube) and filed a $100,000 law suit.
