Qatar Airways goes aircraft shopping in Dubai

November 16, 2011

Qatar Airways (Doha) has selected the Airbus A320neo as the new standard aircraft for expanding its short to medium haul fleet and has increased its order for the A380. The agreement signed at the 2011 Dubai Airshow, is a firm contract for 50 A320neo aircraft and five additional A380s.

The A320neo is an option for the A320 Family and incorporates new engines and large “Sharklet” wing tip devices, which together will deliver 15 percent in fuel savings, representing some 3,600 tonnes less CO2 per aircraft per year.

Qatar Airways has ordered a total of 43 A320 Family aircraft directly from Airbus and, including leased aircraft has 38 in its fleet. The last four of the A320s on order will be provisioned for “Sharklets” following a recently signed agreement. Qatar Airways’ total A380 order increases to 10 aircraft following its initial order for two made in 2003, which was later raised to five in 2007. Qatar Airways’ current fleet also includes the region’s largest number of A330s (29).

The A320neo has over 95 percent airframe commonality making it an easy fit into existing fleets while offering up to 500 nautical miles (950 kilometres) more range or two tonnes more payload. The A320neo reduces fuel burn by 15%, which is equivalent to 1.4m litres of fuel – the consumption of 1000 mid size cars.  This saves 3600 tonnes of C02 per aircraft per year, the amount of CO2 absorbed by 240,000 mature trees. The A320neo aircraft also has a considerably smaller noise footprint. Sales of the neo have reached over 1,200 orders and commitments in under a year, making it the fastest selling aircraft ever.

Qatar Airways also announced an order for two Boeing 777F Freighters at the 2011 Dubai Air Show.

Qatar Airways currently operates 28 Boeing 777s of various types, including 16 777-300 ERs (extended range), three 777F Freighters and nine 777-200 LRs. It recently took delivery of its 100th airplane which was a Boeing 777-200 LR (longer range). By 2013, the airline plans to serve more than 120 destinations worldwide with a fleet of over 120 aircraft. The airline currently has a fleet of 100 aircraft flying to over 100 destinations.

SAS sells 13 MD-80 aircraft to Allegiant Air

Scandinavian Airlines-SAS (Stockholm) announced today it has has entered into a sales agreement with Sunrise Asset Management, LLC, to sell 13 DC-9-82/-83/-87 aircraft and an additional 12 spare engines.

Sunrise Asset Management is an affiliate of Allegiant Air (Las Vegas).

According to SAS, “the order value is slightly above $20 million (140 MSEK) which will have no effect on the result. Delivery of the aircraft and engines will commence immediately and is scheduled to be completed in February 2013.
This transaction is a further step in SAS’ phase-out program for the MD-80 series aircraft which are being replaced by Boeing 737NGs and Airbus A320s prior to the commencement of the A320neo aircraft ordered earlier this year. SAS has earlier sold aircraft to Allegiant and once the deliveries to Allegiant Air are completed, SAS will have sold 45 MD-80 series aircraft.”

According to Allegiant, “these purchases will primarily be used to replace engines that will be coming due for major overhauls over the next two years, thus helping the airline to optimize its engine-related maintenance expense. The agreement also allows Allegiant the flexibility to use several of the aircraft for additional MD-80 fleet growth in the future, should it decide to do so.”

Lufthansa Airbus A320-211 D-AIQW (msn 1367) (100 Jahre Hamburg Airport) DUS (Michael Stappen), originally uploaded by Airliners Gallery.

Lufthansa (Frankfurt) has announced a major expansion for Berlin as the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport (Willy Brandt) is set to open on June 3, 2012.

Lufthansa is planning to add 30 new destinations from Berlin in the summer of 2012.

Lufthansa’s Berlin fleet is set to grow from the current nine aircraft to 15 aircraft.

According to the airline, “currently the Lufthansa Group and its partner airlines account for a quarter of the 21 million passengers in Berlin. To increase this share substantially, the Group will deploy a total of 35 aircraft on routes to and from Berlin from the summer of 2012.”

Lufthansa will assign 15 A320 family aircraft at the new BER Airport. Altogether, 23 Airbus aircraft (A321, A320, A319) will fly from Berlin under the Lufthansa brand. The LH flights will be supplemented by flights operated by other members of the Lufthansa Group – Germanwings, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and bmi – bringing the total number of Lufthansa Group aircraft on routes to and from Berlin to 35.

LH will add 28 new European destinations and two new Middle Eastern destinations from BER. The new schedule will commence on June 3, 2012 and includes a total of 38 nonstop Lufthansa flights.

New LH nonstop destinations include Valencia, Bologna and Birmingham.

As a sign of its commitment to Berlin, Lufthansa will name its next A380 after the German capital. The aircraft with the registration of D-AIMI is expected to be delivered to Lufthansa in April 2012 and is due to carry the name of Berlin out into the world as soon as the airport is inaugurated. The A380 is planned to take off on the first scheduled Lufthansa flight as part of the official opening ceremony on June 3, 2012.

Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air operate their first biofuel flights

November 10, 2011

Alaska Airlines (Seattle/Tacoma) yesterday afternoon (November 9) inaugurated biofuel-powered passenger service with two flights from Seattle/Tacoma to Washington (Reagan National) and Portland, Oregon Alaska and its sister carrier, Horizon Air, are operating 75 select flights between Seattle/Tacoma and the two cities over the next few weeks using a 20 percent blend of sustainable biofuel made from used cooking oil.

Alaska Air Group estimates the 20 percent certified biofuel blend it is using for the 75 flights will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 10 percent—the equivalent of taking 26 cars off the road for a year. If the company powered all of its flights with a 20 percent biofuel blend for one year, the annual emissions savings would represent the equivalent of taking nearly 64,000 cars off the road or providing electricity to 28,000 homes.

There currently is no supply of aviation biofuels in the Pacific Northwest, although potential sources were identified during a regional assessment by the Sustainable Aviation Fuels Northwest group earlier this year (www.safnw.com). Alaska Air Group purchased the fuel through SkyNRG, an aviation biofuels broker. The biofuel was made by Dynamic Fuels at its facility in Geismar, Louisiana.

Republic Airways Holdings remains profitable in the third quarter

November 8, 2011

Frontier Airlines (2nd)-Republic Airlines (2nd) Embraer ERJ 190-100 IGW N162HL (msn 19000231) LAX (Michael B. Ing), originally uploaded by Airliners Gallery.

Republic Airways Holdings (Indianapolis) on a GAAP basis, reported net income of $9.0 million, or $0.18 per diluted share, for the quarter ended September 2011, compared to net income of $21.2 million, or $0.58 per diluted share, for the same period last year.

On an ex-item basis, Republic is reporting net income of $20.4 million, or $0.40 per diluted share, compared to an ex-item net income of $25.9 million, or $0.70 per diluted share, for the three month periods ended September 2011 and 2010, respectively.

Republic Airways Holdings Inc. is an airline holding company that owns Chautauqua Airlines, Frontier Airlines (2nd), Republic Airlines (2nd) and Shuttle America

The Company’s branded business segment includes all operations flown as Frontier Airlines and Frontier Express. Total branded revenues increased 9.0% to $485.9 million for the quarter, compared to $445.9 million for the same period in 2010. Capacity on Frontier, as measured by ASMs, was down 0.9% from the prior year’s third quarter. Load factor for the quarter was a record 89.7%, which was an increase of 2.3 points from the third quarter of 2010. Total revenue per ASM (TRASM) was 12.26¢, up 10.0% from the same quarter in 2010. For the quarter ended September 2011, Frontier posted ex-items pre-tax income of $15.3 million compared to $19.4 million for the quarter ended September 2010.

The unit cost for Frontier, excluding fuel, was 7.23¢ for the quarter, a 0.8% increase from 7.17¢ for the same metric for the third quarter of 2010. The unit cost in the current quarter was negatively impacted by integration and fleet transition expenses as well as the July hailstorm in Denver, which reduced ASMs and increased expenses. Also, the current quarter’s results include only limited benefit from our restructuring efforts.

Fuel costs for Frontier were $196.5 million for the quarter. The fuel cost per gallon, including into-plane taxes and fees, increased 45.7% to $3.38 for the third quarter of 2011 compared to $2.32 for the prior year’s third quarter. This price increase resulted in $61.6 million of additional fuel expense in the third quarter of 2011, as compared to the third quarter of 2010. The third quarter 2011 result includes a mark-to-market loss on fuel hedges of $5.0 million, or $0.09 per gallon. The Company realized gains of $1.2 million, or $0.02 per gallon for hedges that were settled during the quarter. The Company has hedged approximately 25% of Frontier’s fourth quarter fuel consumption and currently does not have any hedge positions for 2012.

On July 13, a severe hailstorm occurred at the Denver International Airport, damaging 22 aircraft that operate on behalf of Frontier. In the following days, Frontier cancelled approximately 250 flights while the aircraft were being repaired. The Company accommodated affected passengers on other airlines and contracted with other carriers to operate flights on behalf of Frontier. On July 23, Frontier resumed its full flight schedule. The Company estimates that its pre-tax income on Frontier was negatively impacted by approximately $10.0 million, including the insurance deductible, in the third quarter due to the hailstorm.

In May 2011, the Company announced its program to restructure Frontier to reduce costs, improve profitability and ensure the viability of the carrier. Throughout the restructuring of Frontier, the Company has emphasized our plan to increase the seat density operating within our branded business. In May 2011, when the Company unveiled the plan, we operated 37 aircraft with 76 seats or less. By May 2012, the Company expects to have approximately five such aircraft in operation for Frontier. The Company believes these fleet adjustments, combined with other restructuring efforts, will greatly improve the unit cost and financial performance of Frontier in 2012.

Frontier branded aircraft with 99 or more seats, which are expected to produce more than 95% of Frontier’s capacity in 2012, had an ex-item, ex-fuel operating unit cost of 6.31¢ in the third quarter of 2011 and 6.54¢ for the nine months ended Sept. 30, 2011.

As of November 7, 2011, the Company has finalized agreements with its A319 aircraft lessors that will provide for an annual reduction in lease expense of more than $26 million in 2012. These agreements also provide for the return of four A319 aircraft during the first quarter of 2012.

The Company has finalized its agreement with Airbus to purchase 80 A319/320 New Engine Option (NEO) aircraft. The aircraft will be powered by CFM International, Inc. (“CFM”) LEAP-x engines. These aircraft will be operated by Frontier and are expected to be placed into service beginning in the second half of 2016.
