Eastern Air Lines (Historical Flight Foundation) Douglas DC-7B N836D (msn 43545) OPF (Bruce Drum), originally uploaded by Airliners Gallery.

Captain Sullenberger, First Officer Skiles, the flight crew that famously landed US Airways Flight US 1549 on the Hudson River on January 15, 2009 in an Airbus A320 N106US, saving the lives of all 155 passengers and crewmembers onboard will be part of the crew that will make a special flight on November 18. The flight was originally destined for Charlotte (CLT). Sully and Jeff will make another trip to CLT on November 18, 2011, but this time in the pictured 1958 Douglas DC-7B N836D (msn 43545) from Opa-locka Airport (near Miami) to Charlotte with only a few select passengers on board.

Captain Sullenberger and F/O Skiles are supporting the Historical Flight Foundation (HFF) by flying only 40 members aboard the DC-7B aircraft from Opa-locka Airport to the Carolinas Aviation Museum, where the flight 1549 aircraft now rests. Sully and Jeff will be part of the flight deck crew, and when not busy up front they will be visiting in the cabin with the passengers. The 2 hour and 45 minute flight will allow ample time for visiting, taking pictures and having great fun.

Back in the cabin, passengers will share the plentiful cabin space, large windows and great leg room famously afforded to passengers during the 1950s and 1960s.

Passengers will be able to enjoy the famous cigar lounge in the rear of the airplane, which may have allowed for smoking at the time – but we’re sorry to say that cigars won’t be allowed on this flight!

Relive how great, romantic and comfortable a voyage was in one of the most luxurious prop airliners. Flying at altitudes of less than 10,000 feet, we will travel up the Florida coast, skirt the coast of Georgia, travel inland through the heart of South Carolina, and directly into the CLT airport.

Upon arrival, Captain Sullenberger, F/O Skiles, crewmembers and passengers will share a photo opportunity with N106US, the Miracle on the Hudson airplane now being housed in the Carolinas Aviation Museum hangar.

Support HFF, meet our heroes, Captain Sully Sullenberger, F/O Skiles and experience a day only 40 people in the world will ever be able to share. The $1000 ticket price includes a complimentary $250 annual membership.

There will be 40 raffle tickets, at $200 each, offered to the members on board. These tickets will be for a chance to win a model signed by the crew on this flight. There will be 8 models in the raffle. Four each of the DC-7B, and 4 each of the famous A-320, N106US – Models manufactured by Atlantic Models, Inc. Winners can pose in front of each corresponding airplane with the crew.
All passengers will receive an autographed poster by the DC-7 crew, including Captain Sullenberger and F/O Skiles.

Come fly with the world’s most famous pilots for a once in a lifetime opportunity, and support the world’s only remaining passenger DC-7B.

Monarch Airlines modifies its livery again

October 15, 2011

Monarch Airlines (London-Luton) has modified its color scheme again, this time increasing the size of the titles. Airbus A321-231 G-OZBT (msn 3546) was the first to receive the changed livery.

Monarch talked about the change on their blog:

“It’s not every day an aircraft is treated to a makeover, but this week a Monarch A321-231 plane was given a sparkling new treatment inside and out. Shiny new decals have been applied to the exterior, while the interior has been freshened up, with new head rest covers and fun new window shades.

Following instructions on a highly detailed technical drawing, it took two specialist technicians two nights to prepare and install the decals, with one side of the plane completed each night. Spanning some 335 square feet (31 square metres), the Monarch brand now covers a third of each side of the fuselage of G-OZBT.

First of all the fuselage was carefully cleaned and dried, before blank white decals were applied to cover existing painted-on wording. Once the self-adhesive decals were smoothed on, they were carefully trimmed and sealed around the edges.

The first of 30 aircraft to be redecorated, G-OZBT can be spotted at our London Gatwick and Birmingham bases in the UK, and will be used for flights to Faro, Menorca, Dalaman and Palma, as well as flights to Spain.

Monarch’s fleet is a mixture different sized and shaped aircraft, including A330s, A300s, A320s and B757s, which presents an interesting challenge for the operations department and graphic artists. Each of the aircraft will have decals specifically tailored to fit the appropriate fuselage and the new livery will appear on the fleet over the coming months. Keep an eye out!”

Air France and Airbus complete a biofuel flight

October 14, 2011

Air France A321-211 D-AZAD (F-GTAX) (msn 3930) XFW (Gerd Beilfuss), originally uploaded by Airliners Gallery.

Air France (Paris) and Airbus (Toulouse) have announced they completed the world’s greenest commercial flight by combining the latest fuel and air traffic management technologies. The flight from Toulouse-Blagnac to Paris-Orly using an Airbus A321 was able to demonstrate the cutting in half of CO2 emitted compared to a regular flight.

The (AF 6129) commercial flight combined for the first time the use of bio-fuels (50 per cent in each engine), optimised air traffic management (ATM) and efficient Continuous Descent Approach (CDA) to minimise CO2 emissions.

Combining these technologies helped half the overall CO2 emissions to 54 grams per passenger and kilometer. This is equivalent to a fuel efficiency of 2.2 litres of fuel per passenger and 100 Kilometers.

According to Airbus, “biofuel is one solution for reducing overall CO2 emissions. Airbus’ alternative fuel strategy is to speed up its commercialization through sustainable biofuel value chains. Thanks to several test flights and collaboration with the fuels standards bodies (ASTM and DefStan), today the use of 50 per cent bio-fuel blends are authorized in commercial flights.”

Delta Shuttle (Delta Air Lines) McDonnell Douglas MD-88 N909DE (msn 53418) DCA (Bruce Drum), originally uploaded by Airliners Gallery.

Delta Air Lines (Atlanta) and US Airways (Phoenix) welcomed the decision by the Department of Transportation (DOT) on October 10 to approve the proposed slot transaction at New York-LaGuardia and Washington-Reagan National airports, subject to certain conditions.

On May 23, 2011 Delta and US Airways announced a new agreement to transfer takeoff and landing rights at New York’s LaGuardia and Washington D.C.’s Reagan National airports, which will enable the carriers to expand service and increase competition at two of the nation’s key cities, and provide the opportunity for additional access to LaGuardia and Reagan National for new entrants and airlines with a limited presence at the airports.

Under the new agreement, Delta will acquire 132 slot pairs at LaGuardia from US Airways and US Airways will acquire from Delta 42 slot pairs at Reagan National, as well as the rights to operate additional daily service to Sao Paulo, Brazil in 2015. Delta also will pay US Airways $66.5 million in cash. In addition, the airlines will divest 16 slot pairs at LaGuardia and eight slot pairs at Reagan National to airlines with limited or no service at those airports.

A slot pair is the authority to operate one takeoff and one landing.

United Airlines’ first Boeing 787 Dreamliner rolls out of the Everett factory

October 13, 2011

United Airlines (Chicago) today (October 13) announced that Boeing completed the final assembly of the airline’s first 787 Dreamliner Wednesday evening (October 12), finishing the first major step in the aircraft’s production. United will be the first North American carrier to take a 787 delivery, with plans to introduce the first of 50 Dreamliners into revenue service in 2012.

While in final assembly, the aircraft moved through four factory positions, including the final aircraft body join, landing gear installation, weight-on-wheels testing and installation of interior components and systems. Over the next several months, the aircraft will move to the next phase of completion, which includes final cabin configuration, installation of engines and painting.

Boeing will configure United’s first 787 with 36 seats in BusinessFirst, 63 seats in Economy Plus and 120 seats in Economy. The aircraft’s use of light-weight composites, together with more electric systems, modern engines and improved aerodynamic design, allows it to fly farther, faster and more efficiently. Customers will experience greater comfort with improved lighting, bigger windows, larger overhead bins, lower cabin altitude and enhanced ventilation systems, among other passenger-friendly features.

United Continental Holdings’ subsidiaries Continental and United each ordered 25 Dreamliners. With expanded range capabilities, greater fuel efficiency and superior operating economics, the 787 will allow United to target new long-haul markets and replace older, less-efficient widebody aircraft.
