UNI Air signs contract for 10 ATR 72-600s

UNI Air (Taipei), a subsidiary of EVA Air (Taipei), has signed a contract with ATR for the purchase 10 new ATR 72-600s. Deliveries are scheduled to start in third quarter of 2012.

UNI Air will use its new ATR-600s to progressively replace its Bombardier DHC-8-300 aircraft.

The new ATRs will be equipped with advanced technologies such as a glass cockpit avionics suite and redesigned cabin interiors. The aircraft will feature Armonia cabin especially created for ATR by Italy’s Giugiaro Design and equipped for passengers’ enhanced comforts with lighter-weight slim-line seats and larger overhead bins that will accommodate a maximum number of carry-on bags.

TRIP Linhas Aereas to become the largest ATR operator in the world

TRIP Linhas Aéreas (Sao Paulo-Campinas) has finalized the acquisition of 18 new ATR 72-600s, plus it took out options for 22 additional aircraft.

Nine ATR 72-600s will be directly ordered from ATR. In addition to this contract with ATR, TRIP will lease nine ATR 72-600 from ALC (Air Lease Corporation) and GECAS. The first aircraft of this new model -600 will enter into service in October 2011.

With this new order, TRIP will become the largest ATR operator in the world, with a fleet of 51 ATRs. Today’s largest ATR operator is Executive Airlines (American Eagle) with 39 aircraft.

AIRES Colombia (Bogota) has now started repainting its fleet into the LAN brand following the acquisition by LAN Airlines.

The first to be repainted is Bombardier DHC-8-402 (Q400) HK-4726 (msn 4119) with a Boeing 737-700 coming next.

Chautauqua Airlines to drop six Frontier destinations from the Milwaukee hub

Chautauqua Airlines (Indianapolis) has announced to its employees it will suspend nonstop Frontier Airlines branded service from the shrinking Milwaukee hub to six destinations effective on November 1. The company will reduce its daily departures at MKE from 67 to 45 and ground its six ERJ 145s operated in Frontier colors. Five of the six removed aircraft will be re-deployed in temporary charter service from November through March 2012. The new schedule also includes service reductions in Kansas City from 26 daily departures to 20 and suspension of the Kansas City-Minneapolis/St. Paul service.

LAMIA prepares to relaunch operations with the help of Cityjet

LAMIA-Linea Aerea Meridena Internacional de Aviacion (Merida, Venezuela) is making a comeback. The new airline, which suspended operations in October 2010, has now worked through its issues and is planning to relaunch scheduled passenger operations this fall. Instead of using a turboprop ATR 72 wet-leased from Swiftair (Madrid), the new airline has turned to Cityjet (Dublin). Cityjet will operate this BAe RJ85 for LAMIA.

Thomas Cook Airlines UK to shrink fleet by six aircraft and eliminate 250 jobs

Thomas Cook Airlines (UK) (Manchester) confirmed it would shrink its fleet by six aircraft and eliminate 250 positions according to this article by TravelMole.

Three Airbus A330-200s will be returned to the leasing company along with an Airbus A320-200. In addition a Boeing 767-300 will be shifted to Condor Flugdienst and a fourth A330-200 will transferred to Thomas Cook Scandinavia.

Aerocon’s Swearingen Metro CP-2548 crashes in Bolivia

Aerocon’s (Trinidad) flight 238 on September 7 while operating from Viru Viru International Airport, Santa Cruz de la Sierra to Teniente Jorge Henrich Arauz Airport, Trinidad, Bolivia disappeared while on approach to Trinidad. The flight was operated by Swearingen SA227 Metroliner CP-2548. There were seven passengers and two crew members on board. Rescuers who have now reached the crash site have confirmed there are no survivors.

The airline started operations in 2005 and currently operates to all parts of Bolivia.

FedEx considers an order for 50 new freighters, considers the Airbus A330-200F and the Boeing 767-300F

FedEx Express (Memphis) is considering an order for 50 new freighters and is considering both the Airbus A330-200F and the Boeing 767-300F according to this report by Reuters.

Colgan Air to end most EAS service from Boston

Pinnacle Airlines Corporation (Memphis) has announced it will be discontinuing most of its operations in Boston, including service to Plattsburgh and other northeast airports operated for US Airways Express by Colgan Air’s SAAB 340Bs.

According to the airline, Pinnacle is notifying the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) this week of its need to relinquish its various Essential Air Service (EAS) contracts linked to Boston.

Singapore Airlines’ (Singapore) New Aviation subsidiary has registered the name “Scoot” with the Intellectual Property Office in Singapore according to this report by the Straits Times. The new subsidiary will launch no-frills, low-fare operations with Boeing 777-200s in 2012.

Southern Star Airlines is born in South Sudan

September 8, 2011

Southern Star Airlines (Juba) is a new airline in newly independent South Sudan. The new airline has taken delivery of its first aircraft, a Bombardier DHC-8-100, via ALS of Kenya. The new company launched domestic operations this month from Juba to Awell, Malakal, Rumbek and Wau.

An Embraer ERJ 145 is expected to be the second aircraft delivered when international operations are expected to be launched.

South Sudan became an independent country on July 9, 2011 after voting to break away from Sudan with international support. South Sudan became a United Nations member state on July 14, 2011. It joined the African Union on July 28, 2011.

Atlas Air to operate five Boeing 767 freighters for DHL

Atlas Air (New York-JFK)has been selected by DHL Express to operate five Boeing 767F freighters owned by DHL in its North American cargo network starting in 2012.

Atlas Air’s CMI service for DHL is expected to begin with one aircraft in the first quarter of 2012 and to expand to five aircraft by the third quarter of 2012. Depending on routes flown, the five aircraft are expected to generate a total volume of approximately 130 to 150 block hours per aircraft per month.

The Boeing 767 is a new type for Atlas Air.

Wizz Air adds a second Airbus A320 at its Vilnius base

Wizz Air (Hungary) (Budapest) announced it will launch four new routes and increase frequencies on several existing services by adding a second Airbus A320 aircraft to its Vilnius base as of May 2012.

On top of the eight current destinations from Vilnius, Wizz Air introduces four new routes to Liverpool, Beauvais (near Paris), Oslo (Sandefjord Torp) and Bergen, and also increases frequencies on two existing routes from May 27, 2012.

airBaltic (Riga) continues to lose money. The flag carrier lost over $67 million in 2010 and is losing money this year.

The government of Latvia, which already owns 52.6 percent of the carrier, will bailout the carrier with additional funding and raise it stake in the airline according to this report by Reuters.

Ireland considers selling its 25% share in Aer Lingus, Ryanair promises not to bid

Aer Lingus (Dublin) is partially owned by the government of Ireland as a “strategic asset”. The government is now considering selling its 25 percent share in the flag carrier.

According to this report by Reuters, Ryanair stated it would not bid for the 25 percent stake if the government indicated that such an offer would be unwelcome.

Icelandair (Reykjavik) will add Denver and the Keflavik-Denver route in the first quarter of 2012.

Keflavík International Airport (IATA: KEF, ICAO: BIKF), also known as Reykjavík-Keflavík Airport, is the largest airport in Iceland and the country’s main hub for international flights. It is situated two miles west of Keflavík and 31 miles southwest of Reykjavík.

Delta launches the first Delta Connection flight with Wi-Fi

Delta Air Lines (Atlanta) today became the first airline in the world to provide in-flight Internet service onboard its regional aircraft with the launch flight of a Wi-Fi-equipped Bombardier CRJ700 operated by Delta Connection carrier Atlantic Southeast Airlines. Delta had previously announced its plan to expand the number of Delta aircraft – which currently includes its entire domestic fleet of more than 550 aircraft – with onboard Wi-Fi to an additional 250 regional jet aircraft operated by Delta Connection carriers. Delta will be the first carrier to deploy Wi-Fi across its entire mainline and two-class regional fleet, a total of more than 800 aircraft.

The first regional jet equipped with Wi-Fi departed from Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on September 7 with scheduled stops in Omaha, Nebraska, Des Moines, Iowa and White Plains, NY throughout the day.

SkyWest Airlines (St. George) as planned, yesterday (September 6) stop flying for AirTran Airways from the Milwaukee station. AirTran and parent Southwest Airlines have taken over some of the regional routes but many are unprofitable for larger aircraft. Southwest does not have a pilot scope clause for the company to contract with other carriers to operate feeder flights.

Air France (Paris) and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (Amsterdam) are considering deeper capacity cuts along with possible hiring freeze according to this article by Bloomberg.

Allegiant commits to six Boeing 757-200s, will launch Hawaii service in the second half of 2012

Allegiant Air (Las Vegas) has made its presentation to the SEC. The company has contractual commitments for six Boeing 757-200s. The airline currently is undergoing certification for ETOP operations and now expects to launch low-fare flights to Hawaii starting in the second half of 2012.

Southwest to add Las Vegas and Phoenix from Atlanta

Southwest Airlines (Dallas) announced today that the carrier is expanding its service plan for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport next year with two additional nonstop destinations, Las Vegas and Phoenix. The carrier will add daily, roundtrip flights between Atlanta and Las Vegas and Atlanta and Phoenix for travel beginning on March 10, 2012.

On August 22, 2011, Southwest announced it would begin service to the Atlanta market on February 12, 2012, with 15 daily nonstop flights to five destinations: Baltimore/Washington, Chicago Midway, Denver, Houston Hobby, and Austin, Texas.

Emirates adds a Rugby World Cup 2011 logo to Airbus A380 A6-EDN

Emirates Airline (Dubai) has added a large “Rugby World Cup 2011″ logo and small titles to its Airbus A380-861 A6-EDN (msn 056).

The 2011 Rugby World Cup will be the seventh Rugby World Cup, a quadrennial international rugby union competition inaugurated in 1987. The International Rugby Board (IRB) selected New Zealand as the host country over Japan and South Africa at a meeting in Dublin on November 17, 2005.

The schedule of games runs over seven weeks starting on September 9, 2011. The final match will be played on Sunday October 23, 2011.

Trans States’ ERJ 145 N840HK runs off the runway at Ottawa

Trans States Airlines’ (TSA) (St. Louis) while operating United Express flight UA 3363 from Chicago (O’Hare) to Ottawa yesterday (September 4), skidded off the end of the runway on landing at Ottawa. All 44 passengers and the three crew members on board were unhurt in the incident.

The aircraft involved was an Embraer ERJ 145LR registered N840HK (msn 145341) which received some minor damage. This aircraft was originally ordered by and delivered to Crossair (now Swiss) as HB-JAH. Crossair elected not to order the trust reverser option for its ERJ 145 aircraft.

The ERJ 140LR is a Long Range version with increased fuel capacity (5187 kg) and upgraded engines.

Trans States issued the following statement:

“Trans States Airlines confirms that United Express Flight 3363 en route from Chicago to Ottawa, Canada, has exited the runway in an incident at Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport. The incident occurred at approximately 3:29 pm local time (on September 4).

The flight was operated using a 50-seat Embraer 145. The passenger list indicates that 44 passengers and a crew of three were aboard the aircraft. Preliminary reports indicate that there were no injuries.

The airline is currently focusing its resources on assisting the passengers who were on board the aircraft.

Trans States Airlines cannot speculate as to the cause of the incident. The carrier will be actively involved in the investigation, which is lead by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB). Trans States Airlines will provide more information as it becomes available.”

Eritrean Airlines introduces a new color scheme

Eritrean Airlines (Asmara) has introduced this colorful new livery. Boeing 767-238 ER E3-AAQ (msn 23309) was rolled out at Shannon with the new look. E3-AAQ is being brought back to flying status after being stored.

Under new Pakistani management, Eritrean resumed operations on July 16, 2011 with an Airbus A320 which introduced this new livery. The first A320 (operated by Nouvelair) operated the newly inaugurated service from Asmara to Lahore, Dubai, Cairo, Rome, Jeddah, and Khartoum. A second A320 will be added in October 2011. The company also plans to restore domestic services in Eritrea once the currently stored Dornier fleet is made airworthy again. It is unclear how this restored Boeing 767 will be operated. Will services to Frankfurt be restored?

TAP Portugal (Lisbon) is facing an uncertain future. British Airways and IAG are considering adding TAP Portugal to their group. Now the Portuguese prime minister is urging profitable Lufthansa to take a close look at the flag carrier.

Missinippi Airways is again able to fly

Missinippi Airways of northern Manitoba is again able to transport passenger. The remote airline’s AOC has been restored following a crash in July.

On July 4, 2011, this Missinippi Airways Cessna 208B Grand Caravan registered C-FMCB (msn 1114) crashed when its pilot attempted to abort its takeoff from Pukatawagan Airport. The aircraft overran the runway and crashed into a ravine where it caught fire and was destroyed. One passenger was killed, the pilot and seven other passengers were injured and transported to hospital.

Grant Aviation Cessna 208B Grand Caravan collides with a Ryan Air Cessna 207 in western Alaska, one killed

Grant Aviation (Emmonak) Cessna 208 Grand Caravan suffered a midair collision with a Ryan Air Cessna 207 on September 1 near the Alaskan village of Nightmute. The Cessna 207 with a single pilot was able to make a safe landing. However the Grant Aviation Caravan crashed and the lone pilot was sadly killed.

GoJet Airlines to operate 12 Bombardier CRJ700s in 2012 for Delta

GoJet Airlines (St. Louis) is planning to become a Delta Connection carrier in 2012. The company is planning to operate 12 Bombardier CRJ700s for DL starting in the first quarter.

Delta ends SAAB 340B service at Tupelo, MS

Delta Air Lines (Atlanta) ended SAAB 340B Delta Connection service (operated by Mesaba Airlines) at Tupelo, MS on September 1. The turboprop service was replaced with CRJ200s. Delta serves Tupelo with service to the Memphis hub. However DL intends to drop all service to Tupelo in July 2012.

Atlantic Southeast’s flight DL 5058 makes a left main gear-up landing at Baton Rouge

Atlantic Southeast Airlines’ (ASA) (Delta Connection) (Atlanta) flight DL 5058 operating from Atlanta to Baton Rouge with Bombardier CRJ200 (CL-600-2B19) N875AS (msn 7599) on September 1 made an emergency landing at Baton Rouge. The crew was unable to lower the left main gear. The passengers and crew members were able to safely exit the aircraft.

Air Sunshine’s (2nd) (Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood and San Juan) Cessna 402C made a successful nose-wheel-up landing at San Juan on August 29. This dramatic photo shows the three passengers and the pilot successfully exiting the aircraft moments after the emergency landing at SJU.

Strategic Airlines unveils its new Air Australia livery

Strategic Airlines (Brisbane) on October 30 will be rebranded as Air Australia as we previously reported. The company has now introduced a new livery concept for Air Australia. According to this article by Travel Today, the new design was created by Sean Cummins who designed the original Virgin Blue livery. According to the designer, the Air Australia motif is based on a “stylized boomerang” while the subtle silver grey colors represents “gum trees, koalas and grey kangeroos” according to this article. The new design also incorporates a rising sun.

Cargolux to take delivery of the first Boeing 747-800F Freighter on September 19

Boeing (Chicago) will deliver the first 747-800F Freighter to launch customer Cargolux Airlines International (Luxembourg) on September 19, 2011 at Paine Field in Everett. Cargolux will fly the airplane away that morning and put the airplane into revenue service. Boeing will celebrate the first delivery with Cargolux, employees and other stakeholders the following day at the Everett factory. Cargolux will take delivery of the second 747-8 Freighter on September 21. The carrier has a total of 13 of the airplanes on order.

US Airways to de-hub Las Vegas

US Airways (Phoenix) is continuing downsize its presence at Las Vegas (McCarran). The former America West hub will be reduced by a further 40% going from 35 daily flights to only 21 later this year and in early 2012. The routes being dropped include Boston, Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Fresno. The routes remaining will only be to its remaining hubs.

Turkish Airbus A340 gets stuck in the dirt, closes Mumbai’s main runway

Turkish Airlines (Istanbul) flight from Istanbul to Mumbai arrived this morning and got mired in the mud as it taxied to the terminal. The Airbus A340 blocked Mumbai’s main runway for most of the day, causing delays.

TAROM-Romanian Air Transport (Bucharest) is facing a future with new owners. The government of Romania has agreed to sell a 20 percent share in the flag carrier. The initial public offering (IPO) has been delayed pending the right market conditions.
