Air Nippon first officer mistakes the rudder trim knob for the cockpit door lock, sends the 737 in flight almost upside down

ANA (All Nippon Airways)-Air Nippon Boeing 737-781 WL JA14AN (msn 33883) BFI (Nick Dean) (to be renamed ANA Wings), originally uploaded by Airliners Gallery.

Air Nippon (ANA) (Tokyo) and ANA (All Nippon Airways) (Tokyo) are investigating an incident on September 6 on flight EL 140 between Naha and Tokyo (Haneda) with 117 passengers and crew on board a Boeing 737-700. Apparently the first officer mistook the rudder trim knob for the cockpit door lock to allow the captain back into the cockpit. According to this report by GMA News and Gizmodo, the action “caused the jet to roll and drop 1,900 meters in 30 seconds”. According to internal investigations, “the narrow-body aircraft continued to roll until it reached 131.7 degrees to the left, leaving it almost belly-up”.

Two flight attendants were injured.

Kingfisher Airlines to exit the low-fare “Kingfisher Red” market

September 28, 2011

Kingfisher Airlines Airbus A319-131 VT-KFI (msn 2634) BKK (Guillaume Besnard), originally uploaded by Airliners Gallery.

Kingfisher Airlines (Mumbai) has announced it will exit its low-fare segment known as “Kingfisher Red” and concentrate on its premium international routes and services.

Kingfisher Red, known formerly as Simplifly Deccan and previously as Air Deccan, is the low-cost brand of Kingfisher Airlines.

Formerly known as Air Deccan, the airline was previously operated by Deccan Aviation. It was started by Captain G. R. Gopinath and its first flight operated on August 23, 2003 from Hyderabad to Vijaywada. It was known popularly as the common man’s airline and Gopinath wanted every one to be able to fly cheaply.

On December 19, 2007, it was announced that Air Deccan would be acquired and merged with Kingfisher Airlines.

Since Indian aviation regulations prohibited domestic airlines from flying on international routes until they had operated in the domestic market for five years, it was decided to instead merge Kingfisher Airlines into Deccan Aviation, following which Deccan Aviation would be renamed Kingfisher Airlines. This was because Air Deccan was the older of the two airlines, and therefore would be the first to qualify for flying on international routes. The merger became effective in April 2008, with Vijay Mallya becoming the Chairman and CEO of the new company, while G. R. Gopinath became its Vice Chairman.

EasyJet’s founder threatens to start Fastjet

September 27, 2011

EasyJet’s (London-Luton) founder, Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, has threatened to start a new low-cost airline named Fastjet (Fastjet.com) to compete against the airline he founded.  The founder has reserved this web address with “Coming soon!” titles.

Stelios and his family currently control 38 percent of easyJet’s stock. Stelios has been critical in the past of the current easyJet management and their aggressive expansion plans and has also pushed for payouts to the stockholders.

EasyJet disclosed Haji-Ioannou’s plans yesterday (September 26) in an apparent pre-emptive strike against this possible new competitor. Haji-Ioannou had previously agreed in October 2010 not to set up a rival low-fare airline.

Finnair flies the Angry Birds to Singapore

September 26, 2011

Finnair Airbus A340-313X OH-LQD (msn 921) (Angry Birds) SIN (K.C. Sim), originally uploaded by Airliners Gallery.

Finnair (Helsinki) flew the world-famous Angry Birds, developed by the Finnish company Rovio, to Singapore on September 20. During the flight, fans of the mobile device game competed in the Angry Birds Asian Challenge.

The Angry Birds game has been downloaded to various platforms, including smart phones and tablets, over 350 million times.

Finnair cashed in on the online craze by flying Angry Birds’ most dedicated fans. The five most popular fans were selected by a jury and were awarded tickets to Singapore. During the flight, the Angry Birds fans and other flight passengers were able to participate in a competition on games consoles distributed to passengers and specially programmed for this event. The winner became the proud holder of the very first Angry Birds Asian Challenge title.

As mentioned, Angry Birds is a puzzle video game developed by Finnish computer game developer Rovio Mobile. Inspired primarily by a sketch of stylized wingless birds, the game was first released for Apple’s iOS in December 2009. Since that time, over 12 million copies of the game have been purchased from Apple’s App Store, which has prompted the company to design versions for other touchscreen-based smart phones, such as those using the Android operating system, among others.

In the game, players use a slingshot to launch birds at pigs stationed on or within various structures, with the intent of destroying all the pigs on the playfield. As players advance through the game, new birds appear, some with special abilities that can be activated by the player. Rovio Mobile has supported Angry Birds with numerous free updates that add additional game content, and the company has even released stand-alone holiday and promotional versions of the game.

Dressing to Fly

Since my last column, there seems to have been a continuing epidemic of poor judgment on the part of some flyers in choosing their traveling attire despite the emergence of several TV shows set in the nostalgic and well dressed 60’s (Mad Men, Pan Am and The Playboy Club). I get a kick out of businessmen strolling through airports with their roller bags, clad in sport coats and shorts with dress shoes, or suits and ties with flip flops, and a lot of younger folks, male and female, with bottoms that are overly revealing, especially when they bend down to pick up their bags. These are no longer shocking, but of late some passengers have been challenged by flight crews or gate agents over their choice of dress and are consequently denied boarding or, in some cases, removed from an aircraft. A young man on his way back to Oklahoma City from a cruise was denied boarding on American Airlines at Chicago because of the profanity on his shirt, which he had picked up in Key West. He had been accommodated on Delta, but was rebooked on American, where the gate agent upheld a higher standard. He was forced to spend the night in Chicago, minus his bags. Meanwhile, rock star Billy Joe Armstrong of Green Day, was booted off a Southwest flight from Oakland to Burbank after his “droopy drawers” caught the attention of a flight attendant. Let’s see if the new “Pan Am” ABC TV show influences anyone’s attention on proper dress attire, as much as I doubt it – although Banana Republic  has launched a line of men’s and women’s clothing based on the series “Mad Men”.

More Pests on a Plane

In the latest on plane critter adventures, business class passengers on a Boeing 757 operated by Russian carrier Yakutia Airlines panicked when swarms of bees escaped from the galley into the cabin on a ten hour flight from Blagoveshchensk to Moscow soon after takeoff. Why there bees in the galley in the first place? Well, they weren’t there to provide fresh honey for tea, but were being transported in two cardboard boxes and were stowed in the galley by a “slightly drunk trafficker” at the behest of a senior airport official, according to press reports. This and other alcohol-related incidents raised concerns about aviation security in the Russian press. Meanwhile, speaking of the press, Nepal Airlines, which had experienced some embarrassing aircraft groundings due to mice or rats in the cabins, issued a press release on September 8 claiming they were not alone and cited no less than seven rodent-related incidents on other airlines. They lashed out at Air India, in particular, and also cited specific American, Delta, United and Scandinavian Airlines situations where rodents had managed to stowaway on board. Delta Connection had a bat (or a bird) that started doing laps on a flight from Madison to Atlanta that was filmed by passengers on their cell phones, but the animal, which ended up getting trapped into the lavatory, could not be found after landing. Watch the video here:  http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/2011/08/05/vo.irpt.bird.cnn?hpt=hp_t2

And then there was the guy who attempted to board a flight at Miami bound for Brazil with seven snakes and three tortoises in his pants! While the magnetometer probably wouldn’t have caught them, it was his lucky day, as well as for his fellow passengers, to be selected to go through the TSA body scanner.

Astounding Airport in Miniature

On a lighter note, but an amazing one, the world’s largest airport model is now on display at Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg, Germany. Called Knuffingen Airport, and based on the Hamburg Airport, it took six years to construct and cost 3.5 million euros. But the result is stunning, as the model features 40 aircraft that take off and land, 90 vehicles that are moving about the airport taxiways and aprons, and much more that must be seen to be believed. At night, the airport view is dramatic, as it has been recreated down in astonishing detail right down

to the operational signs, jetbridges, lighting, parking lots and the placement of people. See the photos and a short video of this truly astounding reproduction here:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1383532/Knuffingen-Airport-German-builds-worlds-largest-model-airport.html. Do not miss this additional video which shows the whole airport in operation, including night shots: http://www.youtube.com/watch?src_vid=4_06qrFnvnw&v=Qz4NcTnQedo&feature=iv&annotation_id=annotation_781794

Air Fare Riots

Civil unrest is, unfortunately a global phenomenon that occurs due to political, economic and social reasons. But in New Caledonia, riots erupted recently due to increases in airfares. There were other reasons for the riots as well, which resulted in the airport on the island of Mare to be blocked for two weeks. The “airfare riots” weren’t a laughing matter, as there were many injuries and also fatalities as a result. There was also damage to the islands’ tourism industry. Indeed, New Caledonia is rather isolated, and air transportation is critical to getting around. I hadn’t been aware of any civil unrest caused by high airfares before.

Silent Inaugural

Low cost airline bmibaby recently launched service from East Midlands Airport to Ibiza, the Balearic island known for music and parties. To celebrate, people were invited to participate in a “silent disco”. This is an event where people dance to music heard through wireless headphones. Two DJs were in attendance, and the impression to onlookers is that people are dancing to nothing. Creative!

Encumbered Aircraft

Arik Air flight 729, a Bombardier CRJ900, was taxiing for takeoff at Kano, Nigeria for a short flight to Abuja when something unusual happened. The plane was barred from departing by officials of Nigeria’s civil aviation authority and seized to settle a million dollar judgment against the airline. A standoff resulted, and eventually passengers and baggage were offloaded and accommodated on another flight.

An Unpatriotic Way to get an Upgrade

If you’ve flown in recent years, you may have noticed how airline gate agents sometimes allow active military to board first, thank them for their service verbally and, if there are empty seats, upgrade them to First Class. A 22-year old Long Island man dressed in military garb and apparently enjoyed these privileges, including the upgrade, on several flights. But recently upon his arrival at New York’s JFK Airport after an American Airlines flight from Santo Domingo, an astute customs officer called his bluff when did not like his answers and discovered that he was not in the military. He had bogus ID tags, a POW insignia in the wrong place and could not state where he was based or even his rank. He was arrested, not for being creative in obtaining an upgrade, but for second-degree impersonation.

Serendipity or Karma?

One of the best things about traveling is the chance to meet interesting people. But it always amazes me on how some of these encounters can really make an impression, and even more incredible when one realizes what a small world it really is.  On a recent flight from Seattle to Beijing, I met Michael and Larissa, on their way on a one-year around the world journey without a planned itinerary. They are blogging their experiences at www.changesinlongitude.com and posting pictures of “Little Rocky” along the way. “Little Rocky” travels with them, and I had the honor, as did a Hainan flight attendant, of posing with the statuette, in the Airbus 330 galley. Most recently they visited North Korea, with Rocky in tow, and were more recently  contemplating a trip to Chernobyl. A while back, I ran into Audrey and Daniel who were doing much the same, on a three year trek, with wide-eyed experiences such as a horrifically uncomfortable boat trip to rural Paraguay. We spent New Year’s Day strolling around Buenos Aires looking for a place to eat, as most restaurants were closed. This was actually a “Twitter” encounter, but as luck – or karma or serendipity – would have it, they were staying only three blocks from my home. Their blog is at www.uncorneredmarket.com.  But just today, I read a Facebook entry by one of my American friends who happened to be in Beijing on his way to Pyongyang, and he went into a noodle restaurant in the basement of a shopping mall across from the Marriott. As he was a lone diner and seats were at a premium, the hostess asked him if he’d mind sharing his table with another solo customer. Agreeing, a Chinese man sat down and, speaking English, they got into a conversation and suddenly discovered that both of them knew me! The Chinese fellow worked with me several years ago, and we are still in touch, having dinner in Beijing should our schedules mesh up.

airBaltic files for bankruptcy protection

September 22, 2011

airBaltic (AirBaltic.com) Boeing 757-256 WL YL-BDB (msn 26251) LGW (Richard Vandervord), originally uploaded by Airliners Gallery.

airBaltic (Riga) yesterday (September 21) filed for bankruptcy and the struggling carrier reorganizes. Operations will continue.

The company issued the following statement:

“Latvian national airline airBaltic on September 21 is filing for legal protection to continue operations in its network of airports served in Europe, Middle East, and Russia/CIS.

For the past six months, the management of airBaltic has informed about the necessity of a capital increase. Baltic Aviation Systems (BAS), the private shareholder of airBaltic, has declared its willingness to cover the capital increase fully, or proportionally together with the government of Latvia. The government of Latvia as a minority shareholder in the airline has neglectfully and repeatedly delayed any decisions regarding the capital increase. In order to come out of a stalemate, the private shareholder BAS agreed to all government conditions on September 16. On September 20, the government again did not take a decision to participate in the capital increase of the airline, or to allow BAS to increase the capital unilaterally, but suddenly and surprisingly announced potential sale of its shares in the airline.

According to the procedure of legal protection in Latvia, the Board of airBaltic has submitted to the court a plan for continued operations, to be approved by the court. As a consequence, the Latvian government as shareholder will not be able to block any decisions in the airline. As part of the legal protection procedure, an Administrator is nominated, to be approved by the court and to be responsible for the legal protection plan that all parties have to follow, including the shareholders, the management, and the Supervisory Board. The management of airBaltic will not change during the period of legal protection, and all the creditors of the carrier will receive the outstanding debts.

The Board of airBaltic will continue operations of the airline. Should the airline be forced to make any cancellations, we will inform our passengers by separate notice as early as possible. We apologize to our passengers for any potential future inconvenience!

The Board of airBaltic is currently in negotiations with all the stakeholders of the airline. All of them, except the government of Latvia, are ready to support the airline in the future. The legal protection plan, approved by the court, must be obeyed and will help to overcome the blockage created by the government of Latvia as a minority shareholder.”

Chile’s antitrust court approves the LAN and TAM merger, with conditions

September 22, 2011

LAN Airlines (Chile) Airbus A318-121 CC-CVB (msn 3030) (80 Anos) SCL (Alvaro Romero), originally uploaded by Airliners Gallery.

LAN Airlines S.A. (Santiago) and TAM S.A. (TAM Linhas Aereas) (Sao Paulo) yesterday (September 21) announced that Chile’s antitrust court, Tribunal de Defensa de la Libre Competencia (TDLC), approved the merger between LAN and TAM. This represents one more step in the process which both companies have followed to complete the transaction.

Currently, LAN Airlines and its affiliates operate 125 passenger aircraft while LAN Cargo and its respective affiliates have a fleet of 14 dedicated freighters.

TAM, including Pantanal, operates direct flights to 45 cities in Brazil and 18 cities in South America, the United States and Europe. Through agreements with companies in Brazil and abroad, TAM’s network encompasses a further 92 airports in Brazil and 92 international destinations, including Asia. The company was founded in 1976 and currently operates 153 aircraft.

The antitrust court’s resolution is complex and considers a series of mitigating measures. Therefore, both companies are currently analyzing in depth the implications and impact of the measures imposed by the court.

On August 13, 2010, LAN signed a non-binding agreement with TAM to merge and to also form the LATAM Airlines Group.

Tom Cooper is back in the airline business – Sun Air International

September 22, 2011

Sun Air International (3rd) (Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood) is the latest airline venture of Thomas L. Cooper.

Gulfstream International Airlines was established by Tom Cooper in Miami in October 1988 and started operations on December 1, 1990. Cooper was a former Boeing 727 captain for Eastern Airlines who flew during the pilots’ strike in 1989. Initially Gulfstream operated as an on-demand air taxi between Miami, Florida and Cap-Haïtien, Haiti, but the company was relocated to the Bahamas when the political climate in Haiti forced the operation to halt.

On November 4, 2010, Gulfstream International Airlines filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. In May 2011 Victory Park Capital acquired Gulfstream when it acquired the assets of Gulfstream International Group. Victory Park also purchased 21 former Gulfstream Beechcraft 1900D aircraft from Raytheon Aircraft Credit Corporation.

Cooper ended his relationship with Gulfstream in 2006.

On July 26, 2011 Cooper acquired two aircraft from Gulfstream Connection in order to restart scheduled passenger flights as Sun Air International. The new airline is planning to operate from West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood and Miami to Chub Cay, Great Harbour Cay, Treasure Cay and Marsh Harbour. It hopes to start operations in October.

This is the third company in Florida to use the “Sun Air” name. The last one was Sun Air (2nd) which operated one Embraer EMB-110P1 Bandeirante for only one flight on March 17, 1981!

Atlas Air cancels three early-built Boeing 747-800F freighters

September 22, 2011

Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings, Inc. (New York) has announced it has exercised its termination rights for three early build Boeing 747-800F freighter aircraft for subsidiary Atlas Air (New York). The three aircraft were part of an order of 12 747-8Fs announced in September 2006.

Atlas Air now expects to receive three 747-8Fs in 2011, four in 2012, and two in 2013. The first five of these aircraft have been placed under long-term ACMI (aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance) contracts, as previously announced.

Atlas Air notified Boeing that it has exercised its contractual termination rights with respect to three early production 747-800F freighters after lengthy delays and performance considerations. These three early production freighters were previously scheduled to be Atlas Air’s first deliveries in 2011. Subsequently, Boeing rescheduled these aircraft to early 2012 and three more recently built, better-performing 747-800F freighters were moved to the 2011 delivery positions.

Atlas Air expects to receive its first 747-800F from Boeing in October, followed by two in November and two in the first half of 2012. The first three aircraft will enter ACMI service with British Airways and the second two with Panalpina.

By year-end 2013, Atlas Air’s cargo operations are expected to include nine 747-800Fs and 24 747-400F freighters. It also expects to have two passenger 747-400s and three passenger 767-300s providing charter service to the U.S. military and other customers.

In addition, Atlas Air expects to operate at least 11 customer-owned aircraft in its CMI (crew, maintenance and insurance) operations. These operations include four 747 Large Cargo Freighters for Boeing, five 767 freighters for DHL Express, and two additional 747-400 passenger aircraft for SonAir.

As previously disclosed, Atlas Air’s five remaining older-generation 747-200F cargo aircraft are expected to be retired by mid-2012, with more-efficient 747-400F aircraft providing continuing service. The Company also expects to return two 747-400BCFs to their lessors at the end of their lease terms in early 2014 and early 2015, respectively. These two aircraft were leased as bridge capacity due to the delay in the delivery of the first 747-8ooFs.

Did Qatar Airways cause the delay of the first new Boeing 747-800F freighter?

September 20, 2011

Cargolux Airlines International (Luxembourg) was due to take delivery today of the first new Boeing 747-800F freighter. Boeing was planning a special ceremony in Everett to celebrate the first delivery but it had to be canceled as we previously reported because Cargolux sent the manufacturer a letter on Friday, one day after Qatar Airways joined the Cargolux board of directors, reflecting their new partial ownership of the cargo carrier. Qatar Airways has been pressing Boeing for compensation due to the delays in the 787 program. Did Qatar cause this delay? Both sides are blaming “contract issues” for the delay.
