Vision Airlines reconfigures its system for the winter season

August 9, 2011

Vision Airlines (USA) Boeing 737-3T0 N732VA (msn 23366) JFK (Ken Petersen), originally uploaded by Airliners Gallery.

Vision Airlines (Atlanta) has now made it official on some of the changes we previously reported for the upcoming winter season. Yesterday Vision Airlines published its winter schedule and announced a shift in the fall flight schedule. Vision Airlines will continue to serve the Destin/Ft. Walton Beach area, but only with flights from Atlanta, Louisville, Tunica (Memphis), Sanford (Orlando), and St. Petersburg/Tampa/Clearwater through the fall and winter schedule.

Little Rock will continue to have service to Destin/Ft. Walton Beach only until November 2.

Vision will add routes to its winter schedule with new flights from Louisville to Punta Gorda (near Ft Myers) and Sanford, Little Rock to Sanford and St. Louis to Punta Gorda.

These changes will take place as early as August 19. As previously reported, the company will discontinue service to Lafayette, Shreveport, Chattanooga, Asheville and Knoxville. We can assume these routes were not meeting their expectations.

According to the airline, “We expect to have a robust schedule of flights to Northwest Florida Regional Airport resume again on April 1, 2012. We are pleased to continue to grow our business in Florida by offering additional flights from Louisville and St Louis. Nonstop flights to popular winter destinations such as Sanford, Ft Lauderdale and Punta Gorda have been among the most requested routes from these airports”.

Unfortunately for the airline, Destin/Fort Walton Beach is in the northern Florida Panhandle and is generally only a summer vacation destination. To keep going year-round, the company will be forced each year to shift its routes to central and southern Florida and the Bahamas/Caribbean destinations to retain a viable winter-time route system. This becomes a costly strategy for the airline. Will it work in the long-run?

After Los Angeles, the Flying Eye Hospital will also visit Burlington, VT, Dallas Fort/Worth, Memphis, TN, and Toronto and Ottawa, Canada between August and November to raise public awareness of the need to eliminate avoidable blindness.

The new Flying Eye Hospital, the world’s only airplane with a fully functioning state-of-the-art eye hospital on board, will be built on an MD-10-30 freighter aircraft and will utilize a modular design concept. It is the first time such modular units have been designed for an aircraft, and building them presents an enormous engineering challenge to meet the demanding technical requirements for both aviation and medical certification. MMIC (Mobile Medical International Corporation) of St. Johnsbury, Vt. is under contract to design and manufacture the state-of-the-art modules which will be carried by the MD-10-30 freighter.

The Flying Eye Hospital is a unique tool that brings dedicated eye care professionals from across the world to developing countries to provide two to three weeks of training and state-of-the-art surgical demonstrations. ORBIS volunteer doctors impart to local doctors, nurses, biomedical engineers and technicians the skills necessary to provide high-quality eye care to their communities that will prevent and treat avoidable causes of blindness such as cataracts, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. Tragically, there are 39 million blind people worldwide; 80% of cases are preventable and treatable. Ninety percent of these people live in developing countries where there is a severe lack of proper medical care. Since 1982, ORBIS has conducted programs in more than 85 countries, impacting more than 15 million lives.

FedEx has supported ORBIS for 29 years, almost three decades, providing millions of dollars of support in cash and in-kind contributions. Today’s donation builds on a $5.5 million, five-year commitment that FedEx made to ORBIS in 2006. In addition, FedEx and its team members donate the unparalleled FedEx Express global network and aviation expertise to help the Flying Eye Hospital fly. FedEx Express pilots volunteer to fly the current ORBIS DC-10 to many of its medical programs and train other volunteer pilots; FedEx Express mechanics provide maintenance support; team members around the world volunteer as part of the ORBIS humanitarian team as interpreters, welcoming and escorting patients to and from their surgeries and checkups, canvassing neighborhoods and assisting with patient screenings. FedEx Express provides complimentary transportation services to move critically needed medical supplies to ORBIS clinics worldwide; makes the FedEx Express flight training simulator available to train volunteer pilots and manages the cost and performance of the annual safety checks for ORBIS’ flagship Flying Eye Hospital.

On Saturday, August 6, FedEx and ORBIS will celebrate their historic relationship with a FedEx Friends and Family Day. The event will feature a fun-filled day of activities for FedEx Express team members and their families, capped by ORBIS’ “Pull for Sight,” where teams compete to be the fastest in a tug of war against the 227-ton Flying Eye Hospital. FedEx Express aircraft and privately-owned WWII aircraft will also be on display.

Boeing delivers the 50th aircraft direct to Xiamen Airlines

August 3, 2011

Boeing (Chicago) has reached a major milestone with Xiamen Airlines (Xiamen) by delivering a Next-Generation 737-700. This is the 50th directly ordered Boeing airplane delivered to Xiamen Airlines and incorporates both the High-Altitude/High-Temperature Airport Operations Feature Package and the new Boeing Sky Interior.

China is one of the few regions that operates high altitude airports. With the High-Altitude/High-Temperature Airport Operations Feature Package, Xiamen Airlines will be able to optimize its 737-700 airplanes for operations in China’s demanding conditions. A new engine thrust rating provides additional payload capability at high altitude airports and in hot conditions, important for operations in the Tibetan plateau. Among other features that benefit airline operations, the package also includes an extended duration oxygen system and equipment designed for the enhanced navigation requirements at high altitude airports.

Established 27 years ago, Xiamen Airlines currently operates an all-Boeing fleet with Next-Generation 737-700s, -800s and 757-200s on more than 100 domestic and international routes. To date, Xiamen Airlines has ordered 83 airplanes from Boeing.

Republic Airways Holdings loses $14.9 million in the second quarter

August 2, 2011

Frontier Airlines (2nd)-Republic Airlines (2nd) Embraer ERJ 170-100SE N872RW (msn 17000143) SFO (Mark Durbin), originally uploaded by Airliners Gallery.

Republic Airways Holdings (Indianapolis) reported operating revenues of $739.7 million for the quarter ended June 30, 2011, an increase of 8.3%, compared to $683.3 million for the same period last year. The increase in revenues is primarily due to a 10.6% increase in Frontier Airlines’ unit revenues. On a GAAP basis, the Company reported a net loss of $14.9 million, or $0.31 per diluted share, for the quarter ended June 30, 2011, compared to net income of $2.6 million, or $0.08 per diluted share, for the same period last year.

The total operational fleet of all subsidiary airlines increased from March 31, 2011, by two aircraft to 282 aircraft as of June 30, 2011. The Company increased its Frontier Airbus fleet by leasing five additional A320 aircraft during the quarter. Also, the Company returned two Embraer ERJ 145 aircraft to the lessor and sold one Airbus A318 aircraft.

By the end of September 2011, the Company expects to have transitioned all 14 Republic Airlines (2nd) Embraer ERJ 170 aircraft from its Frontier operation into fixed-fee service on behalf of Delta Air Lines. In order to backfill a portion of the capacity vacated by these aircraft, the Company expects to place into service for Frontier five of the seven Chautauqua Airlines ERJ 145 aircraft being removed from the Continental Express fixed-fee service during 2011. The other two ERJ 145 aircraft removed from Continental were returned to the lessor in the second quarter. The Company also expects to take delivery of six Embraer ERJ 190 aircraft beginning in September. Those aircraft are expected to be placed into the Frontier operation by January 2012.

Air India’s bid to join the Star Alliance is put on hold

August 1, 2011

Air India 777-337 ER VT-ALK (msn 36309) CDG (Yannick Delamarre), originally uploaded by Airliners Gallery.

Air India (Mumbai) has failed to meet the requirements to join the Star Alliance. The 27 members have now put the the bid on hold to join the alliance.

The Star Alliance issued the following statement:

“The member airlines of the Star Alliance network and Air India have jointly concluded that the integration of Air India into the global airline alliance will be suspended. This is due to the fact that Air India has not met the minimum joining conditions that were contractually agreed in December 2007.

Following a recent review of the status of Air India’s application at a meeting held between the Indian Ministry for Civil Aviation, Star Alliance CEO, Jaan Albrecht and the Air India CMD, Arvind Jadhav, the decision to suspend has received subsequent confirmation by the Star Alliance Chief Executive Board.

Existing bilateral relationships with Star Alliance member airlines are not affected by this decision, which also leaves room to discuss a potential Alliance membership at a future stage, if deemed appropriate by both parties.”
