January 13, 2011

Hawaiian Airlines Boeing 767-33A ER N587HA (msn 33421) HNL (Ivan K. Nishimura), originally uploaded by Airliners Gallery.

Hawaiian Airlines (Honolulu) yesterday (January 12) spread its wings deeper into Asia, with the launch of its new nonstop service between Honolulu and Seoul (Incheon), South Korea.

Seoul represents Hawaiian’s first destination on the Asia continent and its third Asia destination overall, having previously launched service to Manila (April 2008) and Tokyo (November 2010).

Hawaiian’s inaugural flight to Seoul’s Incheon International Airport began with a pre-flight ceremony at the boarding gate at Honolulu International Airport that featured Hawaiian music and hula, a special Korean cultural dance performance, traditional Hawaiian blessing, and the giving of fresh flower lei to departing passengers.

Hawaiian is providing nonstop service four days weekly to Incheon, adding 54,000 new air seats annually to a market that has been rapidly growing since Korea joined the U.S. Visa Waiver Program in 2008. According to information provided by the Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA), arrivals year-to-date from Korea to Hawaii through November 2010 totaled 79,131 visitors, an increase of 75.3 percent compared to the same period in 2009. HTA is projecting that Hawaii will receive 115,000 visitors from Korea in 2011.

Hawaiian’s Flight HA 459 departs Honolulu International Airport four days weekly on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays at 1:20 p.m. (1320) and arrives at Incheon International Airport at 8:05 p.m. (2005) the following day.

Return Flight HA 460 departs Incheon on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays at 10:15 p.m.(2215) and arrives in Honolulu at 11:00 a.m. (1100) the same day. (South Korea is 19 hours ahead of Honolulu and the flight crosses the International Dateline.)

Hawaiian will initially serve the Incheon-Honolulu route using its wide-body, twin-aisle Boeing 767-300 ER aircraft, which seats up to 264 passengers with 18 in Business Class and 246 in Economy Class. Hawaiian plans to introduce its new and larger 294-seat Airbus A330-200 aircraft onto the route at a later date.

The pilot unions of American Airlines (Dallas/Fort Worth), British Airways (London) and Iberia (Madrid) issued the following statement concerning their new mutuality agreement:

“Our airlines are faced with a dynamic industry environment. We understand their desire to maximize the potential of their commercial agreements with each other. It’s also clear that we must take steps to protect the legitimate career expectations of the pilots we respectively represent. Mutual cooperation and unity of purpose are essential to protect our pilots’ professional interests in relation to any joint business venture between our respective airlines. We recognize the potential threats of outsourcing in the current commercial environment and are committed to working together using all appropriate industrial, legal and other means to resist any attempt to outsource pilot jobs.

“We have therefore entered into a mutuality agreement to facilitate information exchange and the development of a common strategy to help ensure a fair distribution of job opportunities among our respective pilot groups. This mutuality agreement will remain in effect as long as the joint business venture and joint operations of our airlines continue.”

American Airlines takes Sabre to court (its previous offspring)

January 11, 2011

American Airlines Boeing 777-223 ER N756AM (msn 30264) LAX (Michael B. Ing), originally uploaded by Airliners Gallery.

American Airlines (Dallas/Fort Worth) yesterday (January 10) filed a law suit in Texas against Sabre, its former spin-off.

The company issued the following statement:

“American filed a lawsuit in Texas state court in Tarrant Country against Sabre. The lawsuit alleges that Sabre’s recent actions taken against American, including the biasing of American’s services in all Sabre flight displays, violates agreements between American and Sabre and harms American, the travel agent community, and the traveling public.

Also, American today filed a request for a temporary restraining order prohibiting Sabre from continuing to bias its display of American flights. We are gratified that, after a contested hearing, the Court has granted American’s request for interim relief, to be in effect until the Court considers American’s request for longer term relief.

The Court’s order prohibits Sabre from continuing its recently announced practice of intentionally making it difficult for American’s agents and customers from finding and purchasing American services in the Sabre global distribution system. American intends to vigorously pursue its litigation against Sabre, including seeking damages for other violations of our agreements.”

In other news, American Airlines and JAL-Japan Airlines announced they have decided to commence their joint business from April 1, 2011, based on the expected start of revenue-sharing on applicable trans-Pacific flights. The airlines, after receiving regulatory approvals from the Japanese Government and the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), are using a phased approach to bring more travel choices and greater benefits to consumers as quickly as possible and to maximize the value for stakeholders.

JAL-Japan Airlines will also co-locate in American’s Terminal 3 at Chicago O’Hare International Airport effective March 27, when Japan Airlines’ summer schedule begins.

The parties are tentatively scheduled to go back to the negotiating table in February and remain under the jurisdiction of the National Mediation Board (NMB). A strike could ensue only after the NMB releases the parties into economic self-help after the expiration of a 30-day cooling-off period.

Members’ accounts will automatically be transferred to the new program on March 1, 2011; therefore, Members will retain their current Rapid Rewards number, and they don’t need to re-enroll.

NEW PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS:

No blackout dates

Every Southwest Airlines seat is a reward seat (no seat restrictions or capacity controls)

Points don’t expire as long as Members earn by flying or using a partner once every 24 months

Points are based on the purchased fare and fare product

Rapid Rewards Credit Cardmembers can redeem their points for flights to more than 800 international destinations, stays at more than 70,000 hotels worldwide, and gift cards at more than 45 major retailers.

The new program also features enhanced A-List and Companion Pass programs for the most active Members, and includes a new level of status with A-List Preferred. Members with an active A-List or Companion Pass status on March 1, 2011, will have their status carried over to the new program. A-List Members will also enjoy new benefits, including a 25 percent earning bonus on flights. Additionally, the new A-List Preferred status level will provide all the benefits of A-List status, plus several others, including a 100 percent earning bonus on flights.

Another new feature of the enhanced program allows for Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Credit Cardmembers to redeem their points for international flights to more than 800 international destinations, stays at more than 70,000 hotels worldwide (from top resorts to boutique hotels), and gift cards at more than 45 major retailers.

Additionally, in the new program, Rapid Rewards Members will have the ability to purchase points. Points will be offered in blocks of 1,000, with a minimum purchase of 2,000 points.

The new frequent flyer program has the potential to contribute hundreds of millions in incremental revenue annually for Southwest, net of any associated program costs, to be fully realized over the next several years. The Company does not currently expect to change its frequent flyer accounting methodology as a result of the new program.”

Bottom line: With the impending merger with AirTran Airways and these changes Southwest has found a new way to enhance revenue with a new standardized program for the two airlines.

Sabre, created by American, issues the following statement about AA

January 5, 2011

Sabre Holdings (Southlake, TX) today issued the following statement concerning American Airlines and the on-going dispute of flight listings:

“For a number of months, American Airlines has taken actions in an attempt to impose a costly, unproven and unnecessary system on agencies and corporations, including withholding fare content from Sabre. We believe these actions are harmful to our agency and corporate customers, as well as consumers, making it harder and more costly to comparison shop. Sabre is taking actions to protect its interests and those of its customers by supporting airlines who value the transparency and efficiency of the proven system we provide.”

American Airlines, in turn, issued the following statement:

“American Airlines today (January 5) received notice from Sabre that it has taken a set of punitive actions against the airline and its customers, despite the fact that American has met all its obligations and continues to work in good faith with Sabre.

The actions, which include biasing its shopping displays, are anti-consumer, anti-competitive and harmful to its subscribing agents.

Sabre’s actions are discriminatory and patently inconsistent with both its contractual obligations and its professed goal of ensuring full transparency for the benefit of consumers and travel agents. In contrast, the actions only serve to protect Sabre’s market position and attempt to force airlines and travel agencies to rely exclusively on its legacy systems that only lead to higher fares and fewer choices for consumers.

American is committed to working with all efficient distribution channels, including traditional travel agencies, online travel agencies and global distribution systems

American Airlines and American Eagle fares and schedules – including all international and domestic classes of service – are widely available through a number of outlets, including American’s own website, AA.com, which features our Lowest Fare Guarantee, as well as through American’s reservations agents, thousands of travel agencies in locations worldwide, online travel agencies such as Priceline.com and metasearch engines such as Kayak.com.”

Ironically Sabre Holdings was created by American Airlines (Dallas/Fort Worth) and AA spun off the subsidiary as an initial public offering (IPO) on March 15, 2000.

On December 12, 2006, private-equity firms TPG Capital and Silver Lake Partners announced it was purchasing  Sabre Holdings Corporation for about $4.5 billion in cash, plus the assumption of $550 million in debt. Sabre joined its three primary GDS competitors, Galileo, Amadeus and Worldspan, as being privately owned.
