Garuda introduces a new Boeing 737-800 retrojet

Garuda Indonesia Airways (Jakarta) took possession of new Boeing 737-8U3 PK-GFM (msn 39920) on January 14, 2011. The new airliner is painted in a retrojet color scheme.

The airline was established as Indonesian Airways on January 26, 1949. The first aircraft was a Douglas DC-3 named Seulawah (Acehnese: “Gold Mountain”). Ironically the first route was outside of Indonesia from Calcutta (now Kolkata) to Rangoon (now Yangon). The DC-3 could not fly direct to Indonesia at the time because the Dutch colony was still not independent.

Skyways to add six new destinations in Scandinavia and northern Europe

Skyways (Skyways Express) (Sweden) (Linkoping and Stockholm Arlanda) will add six new destinations in Scandinavia and northern Europe on March 28, 2011. This will increase its route network by 50%. The new destinations are Brussels, Berlin, Stavanger, Bergen, Trondheim and Sundsvall.

Skyways will launch three departures per day from Stockholm Arlanda to Bergen, two departures per day from Stockholm Arlanda to Stavanger and one departure per day from Stockholm Arlanda to Trondheim. These flights will be operated with 50-seat Embraer ERJ 145 regional jets.

Skyways will launch daily flights from Jönköping to Brussels in the morning and evening. There will also be a daily flight from Jönköping to Berlin with a departure before noon. These flights will also be operated with Embraer ERJ 145s.

Skyways will return to Sundsvall from March 28 with a new route from Stockholm Arlanda to Sundsvall Härnösand Airport. Initially this route will be operated with 50-seat Fokker 50s.

In Halmstad Skyways will launch new Embraer ERJ 145 service for an additional morning flight between Halmstad and Stockholm Arlanda.

EgyptAir (Cairo) suspended its flights from Cairo yesterday, while other airlines scrambled to modify their schedules to meet a government-imposed curfew. Many airlines have cancelled all flights. The on-going street protests are presenting President Hosni Mubarak’s government with its biggest challenge.

Delta Air Lines (Atlanta) yesterday suspended all flights to Egypt due to the civil violence. The company issued the following statement:

“Civil unrest may impact travel to, from, or through Cairo, Egypt. Check flight status frequently for up-to-the-minute info about your flight plans, or get updates sent directly to your wireless device or email with Delta Messenger.”

AirTran Airways has a profitable fourth quarter and 2010

AirTran Holdings, Inc., (Orlando), the parent company of AirTran Airways, Inc., (Orlando) reported net income of $38.5 million or $0.26 per diluted share on revenue of $2.6 billion for the full year 2010. With the announcement, AirTran has reported profits for eight of the past nine years.

For the fourth quarter of 2010, the Company recorded net income of $1.9 million or $0.01 per diluted share on revenue of $645.5 million.

During 2010, AirTran agreed to be acquired by Southwest Airlines, the largest low-cost airline in the U.S. The proposed acquisition is subject to customary shareholder and regulatory approvals and if approved, the acquisition of AirTran by Southwest Airlines is expected to occur in the second quarter of 2011.

Finnair (Helsinki) is getting ready to lease this former Air France Airbus A340-313X registered F-GNIG (msn 174) from ILFC. F-GNIG was rolled out at Paris (Orly) on January 24 painted in Finnair’s new blue billboard color scheme. F-GNIG will become OH-LQG on delivery.

Virgin Blue Airlines warns of a lower first half profit, Air New Zealand increases its share

Virgin Blue Airlines (Brisbane) has warned of a lower first half profit. Analysts quickly downgraded estimates of Virgin Blue’s full-year earnings after the CEO warned of softness in their markets, especially due to the flooding in Queensland.

Meanwhile partner Air New Zealand (Auckland) has raised its share in Virgin Blue to 14.9 percent.

TUI Travel PLC became a new direct customer for Airbus yesterday, with an order for two A330-300 aircraft. The European travel group has ordered these aircraft for its French airline subsidiary, Corsairfly (Paris). The two wide-bodied A330-300s are the latest 235 ton maximum take-off weight variants.

For the 13th consecutive year in 2010, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is the busiest passenger airport in the world and, for the fifth consecutive year, is also the world’s busiest airport in terms of operations (landings and takeoffs).

Hartsfield-Jackson’s passenger numbers increased by 1.51 percent — from 88 million in 2009 to 89.33 million in 2010. International passengers increased by 3.47 percent — from 8.83 million to 9.14 million, slightly less than 2008′s record number of 9.18 million international passengers.

Total air cargo grew by 17.05 percent — from 563,139 metric tons in 2009 to 659,129 metric tons in 2010. International air cargo increased by 24.22 percent — from 310,055 metric tons to 385,136 metric tons.

While landings and takeoffs decreased by 2.07 percent — from 970,235 in 2009 to 950,119 in 2010 — Hartsfield-Jackson remains the world’s busiest airport in terms of operations.

Crystal Thai Airlines is ready to launch operations on February 3

Crystal Thai Airlines (Bangkok) is a new Thai airline. The new airline was formed in 2009 and gained its AOC in April 2010.

The company is a Thai-South Korean joint venture. It is led by Thai logistics businesswoman Manika Sawasdipan and undisclosed South Korean partners.

Crystal Thai has leased an Airbus A320-200 with 174 seats and is also leasing a larger Airbus A330-200 in March 2011 to support long-range flights. A second A320 is expected to join the fleet by the end of 2011.

The airline will launch operations on February 3, 2011 from Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi) to Seoul (Incheon) and Muan in South Korea. Other planned destinations include Mumbai and Cochin in India, Manila (Clark), Colombo, Bhutan, Dubai and Phuket.

JetBlue Airways has a profitable fourth quarter and 2010

JetBlue Airways (New York-JFK) had a profitable fourth quarter and 2010.

The airline produced pre-tax income of $15 million in the fourth quarter. This compares to pre-tax income of $20 million in the year-ago period.

For the full year 2010, JetBlue reported pre-tax income of $161 million. This compares to a pre-tax income of $104 million for the full year 2009.

Net income for the fourth quarter was $9 million, or $0.03 per diluted share. This compares to JetBlue’s fourth quarter 2009 net income of $11 million, or $0.04 per diluted share.

For the full year 2010, JetBlue reported net income of $97 million, or $0.31 per diluted share. This compares to net income of $61 million, or $0.21 per diluted share, for the full year 2009.

JetBlue ended the year with approximately $1 billion in unrestricted cash and short term investments.

WestJet is coming to Orange County, CA

WestJet Airlines (Calgary) announced today it will begin nonstop service from Vancouver and Calgary to Orange County, CA, beginning on May 2 and June 13, 2011, respectively, as part of its summer schedule.

WestJet also announced that service between Toronto (Pearson) and Grand Cayman will continue into the summer as a year-round service.

United Continental Holdings, Inc. (Chicago) today announced fourth-quarter and pro forma full-year 2010 financial results. UAL results for the fourth quarter include the financial results of its two operating subsidiaries, United Airlines and Continental Airlines. Prior to the merger on October 1, 2010, UAL results only included the financial results of United Airlines. Pro forma results that consolidate the financial results for Continental for periods prior to October 1, 2010, are included for meaningful year-over-year comparisons.

UAL reported fourth-quarter 2010 net income of $160 million or $0.44 diluted earnings per share excluding $485 million of special items consisting primarily of merger-related costs and other special charges, an improvement of $347 million compared to the pro forma results year-over-year. On a GAAP basis, UAL reported fourth-quarter net loss of $325 million or $1.01 diluted loss per share.

UAL reported pro forma full-year 2010 net income of $1.6 billion excluding $765 million of special items, resulting in a net margin of 4.8 percent. On a GAAP basis, UAL reported full-year 2010 net income of $253 million.

US Airways reports a profitable fourth quarter and 2010

US Airways Group (Phoenix) today reported its fourth quarter and 2010 financial results. The Company reported a 2010 net profit of $447 million, or $2.34 per diluted share, which excludes special items totaling a net credit of $55 million. This is the second highest profit in the Company’s history and represents a $946 million improvement as compared to the 2009 net loss excluding special items of $499 million, or ($3.75) per share. On a GAAP basis, the Company reported a net profit of $502 million, or $2.61 per diluted share for 2010, compared to a net loss of $205 million, or ($1.54) per share, in 2009.

For the fourth quarter 2010, net profit excluding special items was $28 million, or $0.17 per diluted share. Net loss excluding special items for the fourth quarter 2009 was $32 million, or ($0.20) per share. On a GAAP basis, the Company reported a net profit of $28 million for its fourth quarter 2010, or $0.17 per diluted share, compared to a net loss of $79 million, or ($0.49) per share, for the same period in 2009.

As of December 31, 2010, the Company had approximately $2.3 billion in total cash and investments, of which $364 million was restricted, up from $2.0 billion, of which $480 million was restricted on December 31, 2009.

US Airways has announced that in anticipation of planned retirements and attrition, the Company will hire 420 flight attendants and 80 pilots for 2011. The positions will be filled by recalling employees currently on furlough, as well as through hiring new crew members. The majority of these returning and new pilots and flight attendants will be flying by July. After the recall, US Airways will have approximately 100 pilots and no flight attendants on furlough.

AirTran Airways continues its Caribbean expansion

AirTran Airways (Orlando) is adding new daily service to Aruba and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, from its hub in Atlanta as well as new, nonstop flights from Milwaukee to Cancun, Mexico on May 28. Flights between Atlanta and Aruba will be available beginning on March 7, 2011. Nonstop flights between Atlanta and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, will be available beginning on February 16, 2011.

In addition to Aruba and Punta Cana, AirTran Airways is also expanding flights from Atlanta to Cancun, Mexico, to double daily on February 16, 2011, beginning flights to Bermuda on May 26, 2011, and resuming seasonal, nonstop service from Atlanta to Portland, ME on May 4, 2011.

Daily seasonal service will also begin from Baltimore/Washington to San Francisco starting on May 26.

In addition, seasonal service begins from Baltimore/Washington to Los Angeles on March 8, 2011, and Seattle/Tacoma on May 4, 2011. The airline will also begin previously announced service to Bermuda and increase service to San Juan, Puerto Rico, to twice daily on April 5, 2011, while adding a second daily flight on Saturdays and Sundays to Montego Bay, Jamaica on February 26, 2011.

AirTran Airways is also increasing service to Tampa, FL, and Phoenix to twice daily from Milwaukee for the summer beginning on May 3, 2011.

AirTran will resume seasonal service between Tampa and Asheville, NC on May 6, 2011.

n addition, AirTran Airways is launching previously announced service from Tampa to Key West, FL on March 10, 2011 and San Juan, Puerto Rico, on April 5, 2011.

bmi to start new flights to Basel/Mulhouse/Freiburg

bmi (British Midland Airways) (East Midlands) and Swiss International Air Lines (Zurich) have jointly announced new routes from London (Heathrow) and Manchester to Basel/Mulhouse/Freiburg (EuroAirport) starting on March 27, 2011.

The new routes will be operated in partnership with Swiss with three flights per day on weekdays between London (Heathrow) and Basel/Mulhouse/Freiburg, with two services on Saturdays and Sundays, and a daily weekday flight between Manchester and Basel/Mulhouse/Freiburg.

Services will be operated by bmi using Airbus A319 aircraft.

Thomas Cook Group signs contract for 12 A321s with Sharklets

Thomas Cook Group has signed a firm order for 12 Airbus A321s, as a first step of its single aisle fleet harmonization and renewal plan which is based on the A320 Family. The aircraft will be fitted with the latest fuel saving wing-tip devices, known as Sharklets.

The new aircraft are scheduled to be delivered from 2014, together with options to purchase further A320 family aircraft from 2015.

In addition to the firm order, Thomas Cook Group plans to lease A320 Family aircraft from operating lessors.

British Airways’ cabin crews vote for another strike

British Airways’ (London) cabin crews (flight attendants) have voted for another strike.

The Unite union said that of 7,330 valid ballots, 78.5 percent backed another strike, while 21.5 percent opposed another strike. However Unite left door open for more discussions to avoid a strike. BA has also hired and trained replacement crews.

LAN Airlines has a very good fourth quarter and 2010

LAN Airlines (Chile) (Santiago) financially had a very successful fourth quarter and 2010.

For fourth quarter 2010 LAN reported net income of US$164.6 million, an increase of 49.9% compared to the US$109.8 million reported in fourth quarter 2009.

Full year 2010 results were marked by strong recovery and growth in both the cargo and passenger businesses. LAN reported net income of US$419.7 million for full year 2010, an increase of 81.6% compared to full year 2009.

During the fourth quarter 2010 LAN received a total of five Airbus A320 passenger aircraft, destined for domestic and regional markets. For the cargo business, the Company took delivery of two Boeing 767-300 freighters, destined for operations between Latin America and the United States.

Streamline to start scheduled passenger flights from Trenton, NJ

Streamline (subsidiary of Charter Air Transport) has given the Trenton Airport (Mercer County) a letter of intent (LOI) to operate scheduled passenger flights from TTN to undisclosed destinations. The airport has seen numerous airlines in the past attempt to sustain flights at the state capital airport located between Philadelphia and the New York/Newark areas.

Horizon Air to retire its 13 CRJ700s by mid-year, SkyWest to operate 5 CRJ700s for Alaska Airlines

Horizon Air (Alaska Horizon) (Seattle/Tacoma) will retire its 13 remaining Bombardier CRJ700s and become an all Q400 operator by mid-year.

In addition, parent Alaska Airlines is entering into a capacity purchase agreement with SkyWest, Inc. (St. George) to operate five of the aircraft between California and the Seattle/Tacoma hub being vacated by Horizon. This was confirmed by executives of the Alaska Airlines Group during an analyst conference call.

Frontier Airlines adds frequencies to Boston and New York

Frontier Airlines (2nd) (Denver) announced today an expansion in nonstop service from its hub at Milwaukee’s General Mitchell International Airport (MKE) to both Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) and New York-La Guardia International Airport (LGA) beginning this spring. Frontier will add an additional frequency to New York beginning April 4, 2011, and to Boston beginning on May 13, 2011.

Frontier is also extending its daily seasonal service between Milwaukee and Fort Lauderdale until May 12, 2011. The service was originally scheduled to end on April 17, 2011.

GECAS orders 12 Airbus A330-300s

GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS), the commercial aircraft leasing and financing arm of General Electric, has signed a firm order for 12 additional long-range A330-300 aircraft. This new order brings the total number of A330s ordered by GECAS to 32.

GECAS has a fleet of over 1800 aircraft, used by 245 airlines. Nearly all aircraft owned by GECAS are powered by engines from GE-Aviation, another subsidiary of General Electric.

American Airlines and Sabre agree to a truce until June

American Airlines (Dallas/Fort Worth) and Sabre issued the following statement:

“American Airlines and Sabre have agreed to put the litigation between the two companies on hold until June 1, 2011.

American Airlines and Sabre will begin work shortly in an effort to reach a new agreement. Both parties will return to operating as they were prior to Jan. 5, 2011, in terms of Sabre displays, American Airlines content and economic terms.

Officials at American Airlines and Sabre will not have any further comment on this announcement at this time.”

Allegiant Air (Las Vegas) has received notification from the National Mediation Board (NMB) that the Transport Workers Union (TWU) failed to obtain the support of a majority of employees voting in the dispatcher election and thus, Allegiant’s dispatchers will remain non-union. This the first time Allegiant dispatchers have voted on union representation.

Alaska Air Group (Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air) (Seattle/Tacoma) reported record fourth quarter 2010 net income of $64.8 million, or $1.75 per diluted share, compared to net income of $24.1 million, or $0.67 per diluted share, in the fourth quarter of 2009. Excluding mark-to-market fuel hedge gains of $28.1 million ($17.4 million after tax or $0.47 per diluted share), the company reported record net income of $47.4 million, or $1.28 per diluted share, compared to net income of $4.4 million, or $0.12 per share, excluding special items in the fourth quarter of 2009.

The company reported full-year 2010 record net income of $251.1 million, compared to $121.6 million in 2009. Excluding the impact of the items noted in the table below, the company reported record net income of $262.6 million, or $7.14 per diluted share for 2010, a $173.9 million improvement from the $88.7 million, or $2.45 per diluted share, in 2009. This marks the company’s seventh consecutive year of adjusted profits.

Alaska Airlines is also announcing an order for 15 new Boeing 737 aircraft to be delivered in 2012 through 2014, including 13 new 737-900 ER (extended range) aircraft, which will be new to the Alaska fleet.

Moscow’s Domodedovo Airport is attacked by a terrorist, at least 35 killed

Moscow’s Domodedovo International Aiport was attacked this afternoon by a terrorist. The suicide bomber blew himself up in the international arrivals terminal. At least 35 people were killed. DME is Moscow’s busiest airport.

DME, ICAO: UUDD) is an international airport located in Domodedovsky District, Moscow Oblast, Russia, 26 miles south-southeast of downtown Moscow. Domodedovo is the largest airport in Russia in terms of passenger and cargo traffic (22.25 million passengers in 2010, which is a 19.2% increase over 2009), and is one of the three major Moscow airports along with Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo airports.

Thai Airways International hopes to raise its share in Nok Air to 49%

Thai Airways International (Bangkok) which currently owns 39% of low-fare and flamboyant Nok Air (Bangkok), is attempting to purchase Krung Thai Bank’s 10% stake in order to have better control over the low-fare airline according to Aviation Week.

ANA to gradually replace the DHC-8-300s with newer DHC-8-400s

ANA (All Nippon Airways) (Tokyo) as part of its Corporate Plan FY2011 (starting on April 1, 2011) is begin phasing out the Bombardier DHC-8-300s and replacing them with newer DHC-8-400s (Q400s).

ANA also plans to launch flights between Tokyo (Narita) and Chengdu in June 2011, its first service to an inland destination in China.

ANA is also planning to move ahead with a new budget airline subsidiary.

Korean Air announces its Airbus A380 schedule

Korean Air (Seoul-Incheon) will launch Airbus A380 scheduled service between Seoul (Incheon) and Tokyo (Narita) and Hong Kong starting on June 1.

Korean Air will gradually expand its A380 service to Bangkok in July when the second A380 arrives. The third A380 will permit the flag carrier to launch A380 service to New York (JFK) in August and the fourth A380 will permit Korean to schedule A380 flights to Los Angeles starting in October.

The entire upper deck of the KAL A380s will be devoted to business class flyers.

Korean Air’s business seating, called Prestige Class, will have 94 lie-flat sleepers with 188cm (74 inches) between the seats and extra large seat partitions.

Economy class seats will be spaced at 86cm (34 inches) apart and Prestige Class pitch will be 188cm (74 inches).

KAL’s A380s will have a total of only 407 seats: 12 first class and 301 economy class seats on the first level and the 94 Prestige Class seats on the upper deck. It is the first airline to devote the entire A380 second level to the business flyer.

Korean Air has ordered ten A380 aircraft with the first five to be delivered by the end of 2011 and an additional five by 2014.

Vision Airlines sells 120,000 tickets in 120 hours

Vision Airlines (Atlanta) sold more than 12,000 tickets during its first 120 hours of e-commerce operations.

On Tuesday, January 18, Vision Airlines unveiled its 23 city mega-expansion plan and its $49 introductory fare sale for its first flights to Florida, which are scheduled to take-off on March 25.

Vision Airlines says within 48 hours it sold-out of all $49 seats. Now, in response to immense customer demand, the airline is adding more $49 seats on every flight to Florida. The airline is also extending its introductory $49 fare sale, which was slated to end on Sunday but is now continuing through January 31, 2011.

As we previously reported, charter airline Vision Airlines is now expanding into regularly-scheduled commercial passenger service.
