Alaska Airlines unveils a Portland Timbers Boeing 737-700 logojet

December 10, 2010

Alaska Airlines (Seattle/Tacoma) and the Portland Timbers, official jersey partner of the MLS club, yesterday (December 9) unveiled the team’s official uniforms, training wear and apparel line that will be featured during the Timbers’ inaugural Major League Soccer (MLS) season in 2011.

The event, dubbed “Runway on the Runway,” was held in the 64,000-square-foot hangar of Alaska Airlines’ sister carrier, Horizon Air, at Portland International Airport. Timbers players and Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air employees revealed the team’s official look to some 1,000 fans and supporters. To further mark the occasion, Alaska Airlines unveiled a specially-themed Boeing 737-700 emblazoned with “Proud Jersey Sponsor” alongside the team logo and iconic green, yellow and white Timbers scarf.

The team’s primary jersey, produced by adidas, the official athletic sponsor and product supplier of MLS since the league’s inception in 1996, features a Ponderosa green that pays tribute to the Timbers’ rich history and exciting future in MLS. The body fabric, which prominently displays the Alaska Airlines logo and Timbers primary logo, is specially engineered with the Timbers signature chevron repeating down the middle, tying together the two shades of green that make up the body of the shirt. The classic look reflects the diversity of color one would see in a lush Oregon forest.

The primary jersey also pays homage to the team’s passionate supporter’s group, the Timbers Army, and further celebrates the team’s unique history with an axe prominently featured on the back of the neck and a subtle, lower-back emboss of a rising sun.

The white sleeves of the primary jersey provide a modern twist to the split-jersey design, while the jersey features adidas’ FORMOTIONTM technology that allows maximum athletic movement as well as CLIMACOOLTM technology that combines moisture-wicking fabric and mesh construction in the player’s highest heat zones to improve body ventilation and keep the athlete at optimum temperature. Piping around the shoulders and engineered rib give the jersey further definition.

The primary jersey can be worn with either white or dark green shorts, and the on-field look becomes complete with dark green socks that feature the Timbers axe.

The secondary jersey was inspired by the unrivaled passion and pride in Portland – the Rose City. Also featuring a similar split-jersey design and the familiar Alaska Airlines script, the secondary jersey features two shades of red, with the body fabric specially engineered by adidas with Rose City thorns repeating down the middle and a new Rose City logo badge prominently displayed opposite the team’s primary crest on the front of the jersey.

The white sleeves again provide a modern element to the secondary jersey, while the “Rose City” verbiage on the back of the neck and printed thorn back-neck taping further call to its inspiration.

The secondary uniform is rounded out by white shorts with Rose City red adidas stripes and red socks that feature the “Rose City” verbiage.

In total, more than 30 pieces were unveiled at the runway event, including a team training jersey that will be used at Timbers training sessions, a full-zip jacket that will be seen in the stands during Timbers games, and a presentation suit jacket that will be seen on the sidelines during the team’s inaugural MLS season in 2011.

IAM Charges Delta Air Lines with Election Interference

December 9, 2010

Delta Air Lines Boeing 737-832 WL N3773D (msn 30825) PAE (Nick Dean) (latest delivery), originally uploaded by Airliners Gallery.

The IAM has issued the following statement yesterday:

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) today filed a formal charge of election interference with the National Mediation Board (NMB) against Delta Air Lines in an election concluded November 18, 2010 for 13,000 Delta Fleet Service Workers.

“Delta created an atmosphere of such widespread surveillance, coercion and intimidation that a fair election was impossible,” said IAM General Vice President Robert Roach, Jr. “The scope and sophistication of their campaign to rig the outcome of this election sets new standards in the annals of election interference.”

The IAM’s charges of interference include:

Delta manipulated the outcome of the election by isolating and coercing pre-merger Delta employees to vote from Delta-controlled computers while electronically blocking pre-merger Northwest employees (IAM members) from voting on Delta computers.
Delta manipulated employees into voting from company computers where the carrier could observe how employees voted.
Delta habitually engaged in surveillance and intimidation designed to make employees fearful of supporting the IAM.
Delta held nearly daily captive audience meetings and one-on-one meetings throughout the system to convey anti-IAM information and misinform employees about voting.
Delta discriminatorily denied the IAM equal access to employees, to post information, to discuss Union matters and prohibited employees from wearing pro-IAM insignia, as well as numerous other counts of nationwide interference.
The IAM protest is available at www.IAM4Delta.org.

The Machinists Union provided more than 180 exhibits to demonstrate the breadth of the interference. The NMB found Delta had committed improper election interference earlier this year in an election for Flight Simulator Technicians and in a 2000 election for Fleet Service workers.

Among other relief requested to ensure a level playing field in a new election, the Machinists Union is asking for the election to be re-run either using a mail ballot or, if by electronic means as in the initial elections, that votes cannot be cast on Delta-controlled computers or telephones.

Additional election protests will soon be filed on behalf of more than 15,000 Passenger Service employees and 700 Stock & Stores employees. More information about the IAM at Delta Air Lines is available at www.IAM4Delta.org.

Spain declares “state of alarm” due to ATC strike

December 4, 2010

Spain (Madrid) has declared a “state of alarm” due to the on-going strike by air traffic controllers in Spain. The strike has stranded thousands of passengers.

The full report from the Associated Press:

“Spain declared an unprecedented “state of alarm” Saturday to try to end an air traffic controllers strike that has largely closed the country’s air space and stranded hundreds of thousands of travelers, threatening jail terms for controllers who refuse to go back to work.

Deputy Prime Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba said most Spanish airports were not up and running and apologized to irate travelers who spent Friday night sleeping at airports on what was supposed to be the start of a long holiday weekend.

Monday and Wednesday of next week are holidays in Spain, with many people planning to take Tuesday off as well. It is usually one of the busiest travel weekends of the year in Spain.

The air traffic controllers’ launched their wildcat strike Friday evening in the culmination of a long-running dispute with the government over working conditions, work schedules and benefits.

The final straw seems to have been a decree approved by the Cabinet Friday under which controllers who miss work shifts because of illness must make up those lost hours and can be subjected to medical checkups immediately if they call in sick.

The government placed Spain’s air traffic control centers and towers under military control.

Spanish television showed seas of stranded travelers wandering around Spanish airports Saturday. The flagship carrier Iberia canceled all its flights in Spain until early Sunday morning. Irish airline Ryanair also canceled all flights to and from Spain.

Speaking after an emergency Cabinet meeting Saturday morning, Perez Rubalcaba said of the “state of alarm”: “The immediate effect is that controllers have become mobilized. This means that if they do not go to work, they would incur in a crime of disobedience according to the military penal code.”

The “state of alarm” clause included in Spain’s 1978 constitution, passed three years after the death of longtime dictator Gen. Francisco Franco, had never been invoked until now. It was designed to help governments deal with catastrophes such as earthquakes or floods or, as in this case, the collapse of an essential public service like access to air travel.”

Iberia is canceling all flights until tomorrow.
