Finnair to lease two Airbus A340-300s from ILFC

Finnair (Helsinki) will lease two 270-seat Airbus A340-300 wide-bodied aircraft for four years from the leasing company ILFC. The aircraft will join the Finnair fleet in late 2010 and early 2011.

Finnair currently has 12 Airbus long-haul aircraft, which fly to nine
destinations in Asia as well as to New York in North America. At the end of this year, one further new Airbus A330 aircraft, ordered earlier, will join the fleet. With the coming additions, Finnair’s long-haul fleet will grow to a total 15 Airbus aircraft by the beginning of next year.

Next May, Finnair will open a daily direct route to Singapore.

Lufthansa reports a $135 million first half loss

Lufthansa (Deutsche Lufthansa AG) (Frankfurst) reported a $135 million net loss for the first half of the year. The loss was blamed on the strike by its pilots and the European airspace closures due to the Icelandic volcanic ash.

FAA: Mexico does not meet ICAO safety standards

U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) (Washington) yesterday (July 30) announced that Mexico is not in compliance with international safety standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), following an assessment of the country’s civil aviation authority. As a result, the United States is downgrading Mexico from a Category 1 to Category 2 rating.

With the IASA Category 2 rating, Mexican air carriers cannot establish new service to the United States, although they are allowed to maintain existing service.

A Category 2 rating means a country either lacks laws or regulations necessary to oversee air carriers in accordance with international standards, or that its civil aviation authority – equivalent to the FAA for aviation safety matters – is deficient in one or more areas, such as technical expertise, trained personnel, record-keeping or inspection procedures.

As a result AeroMexico issued this statement:

“Regarding the announcement released today by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which informed Mexico’s downgrade from a Category 1 to a Category 2 in their safety ranking, Grupo Aeroméxico issues the following statement:

1.      The downgrade to Category 2 is a result of an audit performed by the FAA to the Civil Aeronautics Board (DGAC) of Mexico. The result of this audit exclusively refers to the Mexican aeronautics authority and does not reflect the level of safety that national airlines maintain.

2.      Aeromexico and its affiliate company Aeroméxico Connect are routinely audited by the FAA in all of its outbound operations to the United States, as is its affiliate, Aeromexico Connect and the highest international standards of operational safety are always fulfilled. Aeromexico is the first Mexican airline that has received its third consecutive IOSA (IATA Operational Safety Audit) re-certification given by the International Air Transport Association, IATA.

3.      Aeromexico collaborates with American authorities in other safety programs such as the Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) “Prevention Against Acts of Illegal Interference Program” and the Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) “Security Program”.

Cargo operations have been certified in theft and terrorism prevention by the Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT), and the airline is an active member of the International Society of Air Safety Investigators (ISASI), a world-wide association committed to promoting the prevention of accidents and air incidents.

4.      As founding member of SkyTeam, the global airline alliance, in which 13   airlines participate, Aeromexico is required to comply with security standards in order to operate the codeshared flights with other partners.

Within this alliance, US carrier Delta Airlines performed annual security-related audits to Aeromexico from 1994 until 2006. The global security standard IOSA was established as a requirement since 2006 and Aeromexico proudly holds this standard since its inception.

The measure announced by the FAA, doesn’t imply any changes in the operations to / from the United States by Aeromexico and its affiliated companies and all flights continue to operate normally.

Aeromexico will cooperate with the aeronautics authority to reestablish the Category 1 rating and will work hard to mitigate the effects and inconveniences that this measure could cause its passengers in Mexico and the US.

All domestic operations of Aeromexico as well as flights to Central and South America, Europe and Asia will remain unaffected.”

Atlas Air’s Global Supply Systems to operate three Boeing 747-800F freighters for British Airways

Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings (New York-JFK) confirmed that its 49%-owned UK subsidiary, Global Supply Systems Limited (GSS) (London-Stansted), has signed a five-year wet leasing agreement with British Airways Plc to operate three Boeing 747-8 freighters on behalf of British Airways starting in 2011.

Under this long-term aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance (ACMI) outsourcing contract, GSS will provide a turnkey solution for British Airways’ cargo division, British Airways World Cargo (BAWC). GSS will lease the 747-8F aircraft that it will operate for BAWC from AAWW’s Atlas Air unit, which expects to take delivery of the aircraft from Boeing in early 2011.

Mexicana considers its options, two flights blocked in Canada

Mexicana (Mexico City) is considering its options according to this report by Reuters. Two departures from Canada (Montreal and Calgary) were blocked by the owners of the aircraft. Representatives from the pilots and flight attendants unions stated the company is considering protection from its creditors.

World Airways to lease two Boeing 747-400 freighters

World Airways (Atlanta), a subsidiary of Global Aviation Holdings Inc., has entered into an agreement to add two leased Boeing 747-400 freighters to its fleet. The aircraft, scheduled for delivery in December 2010 and February 2011, will grow World’s B747-400 freighter fleet to four aircraft.

World is also in the process of reactivating a MD-11 freighter that it had placed into storage in 2009. This aircraft will enter revenue service in September 2010, and will return World’s fuel efficient MD-11 freighter fleet to nine active aircraft.

Southwest Airlines converts 25 options for 25 additional Boeing 737-700s

Southwest Airlines (Dallas) according to the Associated Press converted 25 options into firm orders for 25 Boeing 737-700s in order to continue to replace older 737-300/500s. Deliveries will run from 2011 through 2016. The order was previously attributed to an unidentified customer.

Frontier Airlines to end Aspen service on September 30 as Lynx Aviation is phased out

Frontier Airlines (2nd) (Denver) will end service to the mountain ski resort destination of Aspen on September 30, 2010. This is also the last day of operations for Lynx Aviation and the Bombardier DHC-8-402s (Q400s). Frontier has elected to not use Republic Airlines’ (2nd) Embraer ERJ 170s or ERJ 190s into ASE.

Delta Air Lines will also not return to Aspen this coming winter season, leaving only United with the United Express service.

American Eagle Airlines (Dallas/Fort Worth) announced daily nonstop service between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and three new destinations – Norfolk International Airport (ORF), Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG), and Indianapolis International Airport (IND), beginning on November 18. Eagle will operate the service with 50-seat Embraer ERJ 145 regional jets.

British Airways to launch London City-Copenhagen flights

British Airways (London) is opening up its route network from London City Airport with the launch of its first route to Scandinavia.

The airline has announced plans to start a new double daily weekday service from the Docklands Airport with flights to Copenhagen in Denmark, providing a direct air link between the two capital cities.

There will also be one flight a day from London City on Sundays and one flight from Copenhagen on Saturdays.

The new flights will start on September 12, and will be operated by British Airways wholly-owned subsidiary BA CityFlyer with their fleet of brand new Embraer ERJ 190 aircraft.

Southwest Airlines reports 2Q net income of $112 million

Southwest Airlines (Dallas) reported second quarter 2010 net income of $112 million, or $.15 per diluted share, compared to net income of $91 million, or $.12 per diluted share, for second quarter 2009. Both years’ results included special items related to non-cash, mark-to-market, and other items associated with a portion of the Company’s fuel hedge portfolio. Excluding special items for both periods, second quarter 2010 net income was $216 million, or $.29 per diluted share, compared to $59 million, or $.08 per diluted share, for second quarter 2009. The second quarter 2010 net income, excluding special items, of $.29 per diluted share exceeded Thomson’s First Call mean estimate of $.27 per diluted share.

Alaska Airlines to launch San Jose-Los Cabos flights on November 20

Alaska Airlines will inaugurate thrice-weekly service between San Jose, Calif., and Los Cabos, Mexico, starting November 20, 2010, subject to government approval. The nonstop flight will operate on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The new flights will be operated with Boeing 737-700 aircraft, accommodating 12 passengers in first class and 112 in the main cabin.

Mauritania Airways (Nouakchott) Boeing 737-700 ran off the runway yesterday (July 28) at Conakry while operating a flight from Nouakchott to Conakry via Dakar. The airliner ended up in the grass on a slight downward slope. The aircraft is intact. 10 people received slight injuries. The airliner reportedly land long at night. Tunisair owns 51% of the company and leased the aircraft to Mauritania Airways.

TAM Airlines firms up order for 20 Airbus A320 Family aircraft and five A350-900s

TAM Airlines (TAM Linhas Aereas) (Sao Paulo) has signed a firm order for 25 Airbus aircraft, bringing the Brazilian airline’s total Airbus order book to 176. This order for 20 A320 Family aircraft and five A350-900s follows the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) announced at ILA Berlin Air Show in June.

TAM’s new A320 Family aircraft will replace existing A320 Family aircraft as part of the airline’s commitment to keep an average fleet age of six years.

As of today, TAM’s total Airbus orders have increased to 134 A320 Family aircraft, 15 A330-200s and 27 A350 XWB. 65 Airbus A320 Family aircraft, two A330-200s and 27 A350 XWB are still in the backlog.

Hawaiian Airlines (Honolulu) reported consolidated net income for the three months ended June 30, 2010 of $9.0 million, or $0.17 per diluted share, on total operating revenue of $315.9 million. This result compares with net income of $27.5 million, or $0.53 per diluted share, on total operating revenue of $292.0 million for the three months ended June 30, 2009. Year ago quarterly results benefitted from materially lower fuel costs and a lower effective tax rate. Adjusted net income reflecting economic fuel expense of $11.0 million or $0.21 per share compares to $20.8 million or $0.40 per share in the prior year period.

LAN Airlines reports a 2Q net profit of $60.6 million

LAN Airlines (Chile) (Santiago) reported net income of $60.6 million (US) for the second quarter compared to $4.2 million in the same period in 2009.

As previously reported, In July 2010, LAN signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the purchase of 50 Airbus A320 family aircraft to be delivered between 2012 and 2016. The new aircraft will operate regional and domestic flights within Latin America.

LAN also signed an agreement in July with Boeing to adjust the delivery of 2 Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft to 2012. This modification to LAN’s fleet plan will allow the company to receive a total of 5 Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft in 2012. This is in addition to the anticipated delivery of 10 Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner already announced in March 2010. As a result, LAN will be the first airline in the western hemisphere to take delivery of this new and modern aircraft.

United-Continental merger receives unconditional clearance from the European Commission

United Airlines (Chicago) and Continental Airlines (Houston) have received unconditional clearance from the European Commission on the airlines’ proposed merger. The Commission noted its investigation found the proposed transaction would not raise any specific concerns in Europe or the trans-Atlantic market.

The companies announced their plans for an all-stock merger of equals in May and expect the transaction to close in the fourth quarter of 2010. United Airlines will be the surviving name while retaining the Continental Airlines livery.

American Airlines applies for additional frequencies to Brazil

American Airlines (Dallas/Fort Worth) has filed an application with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for the right to use three weekly regional Brazil frequencies that Delta Air Lines is relinquishing as of September 7, 2010.

If granted, American will begin flying nonstop between Miami and Brasilia on November 18, 2010, as scheduled, and between Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) and Rio de Janiero (GIG).

For the new Miami to Brasilia route, American will fly 182-seat Boeing 757-200 aircraft that accommodate 16 Business Class and 166 Economy Cabin passengers.

American also will begin operating daily service between New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Rio de Janeiro on November 18. This new service is possible because earlier this summer American was awarded the rights to operate 11 new flights between the United States and Brazil.

Air Berlin (stylized as airberlin) (airberlin.com) (Berlin-Tegel) is planning to join oneworld®, adding Europe’s fifth largest airline and Germany’s second biggest carrier to the airline alliance.

Air Berlin Group member Niki (Vienna) will become an affiliate member of the alliance.

A memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Air Berlin and oneworld was completed in the airline’s Berlin home city last night (July 26), with a formal alliance membership agreement to be signed soon.

Air Berlin is expected to start flying as part of oneworld in early 2012 – just weeks before the opening of the new Berlin Brandenburg International Airport, which is being built as a major new hub for Europe.

Lufthansa Cargo’s (Frankfurt) McDonnell Douglas MD-11F D-ALCQ (msn 48431) crashed on landing at Riyadh today (July 27). The freighter caught on fire as it was landing, crashed and split into two sections. The pilot and the first officer were slightly injured and were taken to the hospital.

ANA introduces its ANA x Gundam logojet

ANA (All Nippon Airways) (Tokyo) has introduced its new “ANA × GUNDAM JET” Boeing 777-300 logojet. The Triple Seven displays real-life size graphics of the robot on the side of the aircraft. The aircraft was introduced on July 16 between Tokyo (Haneda) and Osaka (Itami) and will later operate on other ANA domestic routes until March 2011. Furthermore, ANA will retail special-edition GUNDAM model kits, exclusively designed with ANA corporate colors, on its international flights between July 1, 2010 and February 28, 2011.

In other news, ANA recently exercised options to purchase Aviation Partners Boeing Blended Winglets for installation on five new 767-300 ER’s that are scheduled to be delivered from Boeing starting in 2011. Added to their initial order of four, finalized in August 2009, this new order brings ANA’s commitment for 767-300 ER Blended Winglets to nine systems.  ANA is scheduled to start their first installation of 767-300 ER Blended Winglets in September of this year.

Iceland Express is coming to Orlando

Iceland Express (Keflavik) starts weekly flying to Florida from Reykjavík (Keflavik) starting on October 2 when it adds Orlando. However the seasonal run will only last for the month with the last scheduled flight due to be on October 23. The flights will be operated by Astraeus Airlines.

The Newark flights have been extended by an extra two months, until the end of October.

Virgin Atlantic Airways introduces a new livery

Virgin Atlantic Airways (London) this morning (July 25) rolled out a new on Boeing 747-41R G-VROC (msn 32746) at Air Livery at Manchester. The revised scheme has taken the rather drab 2006 color scheme and added large lower case billboard titles.

On July 29 Virgin Atlantic officially unveiled the new aircraft livery and brand identity for the airline. As the press release states, “the new design, which will be applied to all of the company’s 38 aircraft, signage, communications and advertising was showcased on one of Virgin Atlantic’s Boeing 747-400 aircraft G-VROC.

The Virgin Atlantic name, previously on the front end of the fuselage is now emblazoned large across the whole of the aircraft in a fine custom drawn font. In addition, the undercarriage of the aircraft now features the new Virgin Atlantic logo in dark purple – making the aircraft more easily identifiable when taking off and landing. The winglets are now red with the Virgin script on the inner side, visible to passengers on board the plane.

The new livery uses an entirely new paint system which is unique to Virgin Atlantic – a first on commercial aircraft. It has been specially developed to achieve a highly reflective depth of metallic color.

The painting process has been simplified, using fewer maskings and applications for a drastic reduction in materials used. Over 450 liters of paint was used and took over 3,000 – 3,500 man hours to paint. The new paint is more durable so aircraft will only require re- painting once a decade.

The iconic, flag carrying flying lady, who appears on all Virgin Atlantic aircraft, has been rejuvenated with a subtle cosmetic makeover and enhanced detailing – now fluttering a larger Union Jack.

London brand agency Circus was commissioned in 2008 to review and refine the Virgin Atlantic brand values. The new livery and logo were developed by award winning design consultancy, Johnson Banks, in collaboration with the in-house brand design team, led by Joe Ferry and Nina Jenkins, and was created using the brand values defined by Circus.”

Southwest Airlines (Dallas) according to this report in the Arizona Daily Star has recently added “mechanical difficulties” to the list of “acts of God” and other situations in which the airline will not be liable for compensation if the flight is delayed.

According to the newspaper, Southwest Airlines quietly changed its policy a few weeks ago. The change appears on page 11 of 32 pages of the “contract of carriage.”

FlyLAL Charters changes its name to Small Planet Airlines

FlyLAL Charters (Vilnius) in July 2010 decided to change its name and brand. The company will be now known as leisure carrier Small Planet Airlines.

This summer Small Planet Airlines operates a total of seven Boeing aircraft and performs flights from Lithuania, Estonia, Poland and Italy. The airline possesses the Air Operator Certificates (AOC) granted by three European countries (Lithuania, Estonia and Poland) and has started certification process for acquiring the fourth in Italy. Small Planet Airlines performs charter flights inside the EU as well as to other countries.

The current Boeing 737 Classic aircraft will be gradually replaced with Boeing 737 Next Generation aircraft, more modern and capable of flying longer distances. This will enable Small Planet Airlines in cooperation with tour operators to offer a broader range of destinations. The first two Boeing 737NG aircraft will arrive in summer 2011.

Spirit Airlines’ pilots ratify the new contract

Spirit Airlines’ (Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood) pilots have ratified a new contract containing substantial pay raises and new work rules, following four years of talks and a June strike. Represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA), 96 percent of the eligible Spirit pilots voted, with 74 percent approving the new agreement.

The new five-year deal goes into effect as soon as it is signed, immediately increasing hourly wages by an average of 10 percent for captains and 18 percent for first officers. In addition, the entire pilot group will receive a substantial signing bonus. The agreement also includes much-needed clarification on existing work rules, puts in writing long-standing operations practices, while providing the company with additional flexibility on scheduling.

Delta Air Lines requests to expand service to Brazil

Delta Air Lines (Atlanta) yesterday (July 23) submitted an application to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to expand its service between the United States and Brazil, which would allow increased flights between its Detroit hub and Sao Paulo.

Delta has received approval to begin twice-weekly service between Detroit and Sao Paulo on October 21. If approved, the new flights will allow that service to be operated five days per week.

The flights will be operated with 216-seat Boeing 767-300 ER aircraft, with 35 BusinessElite seats and 181 seats in Economy Class.

Alaska Airlines “Greener Skies” test flight lowers emissions by 35%

Alaska Airlines (Seattle/Tacoma) this week demonstrated next-generation flight procedures during a test flight over Puget Sound that burned less fuel and reduced emissions by 35 percent compared to a conventional landing. The flight was part of Alaska Air Group’s “Greener Skies” project at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (Sea-Tac) focused on using satellite-based guidance technology pioneered by Alaska Airlines to fly more efficient landing procedures that will reduce environmental impacts in the Puget Sound region. The airline, in cooperation with the Port of Seattle, Boeing and other airlines serving Sea-Tac, is seeking Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval for the procedures, which could ultimately be used by all properly equipped carriers at Sea-Tac.

Testing for the project began last summer and, since then, Alaska Airlines has flown two other demonstration flights and submitted more than half of the proposed procedures for FAA review. Representatives from Alaska, Boeing, the FAA and the Port of Seattle participated in the most recent demonstration to observe the level of flight path precision and fuel consumption on eight landing approaches in a Boeing 737-700. With a landing weight similar to a typical passenger flight, the shorter and more efficient approaches reduced carbon emissions and saved 400 pounds of fuel per approach.

The test flight used satellite guidance technology called Required Navigation Performance (RNP) to fly more direct, continuous descent approaches. Alaska Airlines estimates the new procedures at Sea-Tac will cut fuel consumption by 2.1 million gallons annually and reduce carbon emissions by 22,000 metric tons, the equivalent of taking 4,100 cars off the road every year. They will also reduce overflight noise for an estimated 750,000 people living below the affected flight corridor.

Typically, commercial aircraft follow a lengthy approach pattern and series of stair-step descents before landing. Using RNP technology and a continuous descent, also called an optimized profile descent (OPD), aircraft can descend from cruise altitude to an airport runway along a shorter, more direct flight path at low power.

Planning and testing of the procedures will continue through the remainder of the year and will be integrated into Alaska Airlines and sister carrier Horizon Air’s commercial operations at Sea-Tac pending FAA approval.

Alaska Airlines pioneered RNP precision flight-guidance technology during the mid-1990s to help its planes land at some of the world’s most remote and geographically challenging airports in the state of Alaska. RNP provides computer-plotted landing paths by using a combination of onboard navigation technology and the global positioning system (GPS) satellite network. It improves safety and reliability in all weather, and reduces reliance on ground-based navigation aids. Alaska Airlines currently uses FAA-approved RNP procedures at 23 U.S. airports.

Alaska Airlines is the only major U.S. air carrier with a completely RNP-equipped fleet and fully trained crews. Alaska is also the first airline approved by the FAA to conduct its own RNP flight validation. Horizon Air’s fleet will be fully RNP-equipped by the end of 2011.

RNP and OPD are part of the Next Generation Air Transportation System, the FAA’s plan to modernize the National Airspace System through 2025. This initiative will increase airspace capacity and efficiency while improving safety and reducing environmental impacts through the replacement of legacy ground-based equipment with new satellite-based technology and aircraft navigation capabilities.

As part of the initial Alaska Airlines RNP operational approval team, Boeing began installing RNP guidance technology on its aircraft in 1994. Currently, all Boeing production airplanes are RNP-capable, and solutions are available to upgrade the in-service fleet. The Boeing Company is continuing this pioneering tradition by working with Alaska Airlines, the FAA and the Port of Seattle in implementing RNP solutions and the Greener Skies program for Sea-Tac.

Asiana Airlines Cargo to add Atlanta on September 13

Asiana Airlines (Seoul-Incheon) will extend its cargo network to Atlanta, starting on September 13. The new route will be operated four times a week with Boeing 747-400F freighters.

On the financial side, the second quarter profit slipped to slightly over $12 million.

Spring Airlines doubles its profit in the first half, plans to go public

Spring Airlines (Shanghai) more than doubled its first half profit to over $23 million. The private airline has grown its fleet to 20 Airbus A320s and plans to become China’s first private airline to go public by listing shares on the Chinese stock market in 2011.

Ryanair’s quarterly profits slips to $121 million

Air Canada loses the first round to compete against Porter

Air Canada (Montreal) has apparently lost the first round in its latest effort to gain access for Air Canada Jazz at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport and compete against Porter Airlines.

A federal court judge has dismissed Air Canada’s allegations of wrongdoing against Porter Airlines.
