Horizon Air wins a tentative agreement with its pilots

June 12, 2010

Horizon Air Bombardier CRJ700 (CL-600-2C10) N601QX (msn 10009) LGB (Michael B. Ing), originally uploaded by Airliners Gallery.

Horizon Air (Seattle/Tacoma) and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) jointly announced that, with the assistance of federal mediation, they have reached an agreement in principle on a new contract for the airline’s 686 pilots.

In the coming weeks, Horizon and the IBT will focus on finalizing the language for the agreed-upon items. The intent is to reach a tentative agreement that the IBT would present to Horizon pilots for ratification.

Horizon’s pilot contract became amendable in September 2006. After years of negotiations, in January 2010 both Horizon and the IBT requested federal mediation to work through the remaining open items.

Per federal law, airline contracts don’t expire. An existing contract remains in effect after the amendable date until a new contract is agreed to by the negotiating teams and ratified by represented members.

Capital Cargo International Airlines’ pilots to vote on a new contract

June 10, 2010

Capital Cargo International Airlines Boeing 757-232 (SF) N620DL (msn 22910) MIA (Bruce Drum), originally uploaded by Airliners Gallery.

Capital Cargo International Airlines’ (Orlando) pilots, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), will vote on a tentative agreement that, if ratified by members, will result in a new contract. The proposed 36-month agreement would include pay increases, a new contract bonus, as well as improved work rules and quality of life enhancements for cockpit crewmembers.

Negotiators for the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA), which represents CCIA crewmembers, and Capital Cargo International Airlines met during the week of May 10 under the supervision of the National Mediation Board (NMB). The crewmembers and management worked out the deal during the late hours of May 15, after intense bargaining that extended over the weekend. Final language was completed this week.

In June, the pilot leaders and negotiating committee team will begin a series of road shows, in Cincinnati, Toledo and Miami—the crew hubs—to provide details of the agreement to the membership. After the education campaign is completed, Capital Cargo’s 122 cockpit crewmembers will have the opportunity to vote on whether to ratify the agreement.

Capital Cargo crewmembers merged their independent union with ALPA in 2007. At that time, they began negotiating as an ALPA pilot group after voting down two tentative contract agreements achieved by their independent union.

Aerolineas Argentinas introduces a new livery

June 10, 2010

Image: Aerolineas Argentinas.

Aerolineas Argentinas (Buenos Aires) has introduced a new livery. The company (along with subsidiary Austral) “renews its visual identity by keeping certain characteristic elements, such as the condor – currently present with a simple and slender line – but changing its blue color for light blue as a tribute to the national flag, with a touch of yellow with reference to the sun.”

The company appointed FutureBrand, a global branding consultancy who participated in a bidding process and emerged as the winner. FutureBrand is recognized for being responsible for renewing the corporate identity of high-profile airlines such as British Airways, Air Canada, South African Airways, LAN and Avianca.

FutureBrand’s first challenge was to develop the brand strategy, which in turn led to the brand re-positioning, to include all touch-points of the flight experience. The discovery of this stage was key to continuing with the next steps: creation and development of the visual identity and tagline, specific applications such as implementation of retail concepts, uniforms design supervision, brand application on all passenger items, and corporate and launch communications, among others.

The new brand image preserves some of the historical elements that position the company amongst world class airlines: the condor symbol of the airline has been redrawn, styling its strokes and providing greater purity to its shape. The distinctive blue color of the company has been replaced by a light blue, which is closer to that of the national flag, enhancing its presence in its application on the aircrafts of the new fleet. The old typography has been replaced by a more modern, lightweight and agile one, which preserves the traditional italic writing, a symbol of the progress and optimism that represents this new phase.

Hawaiian dedicates its new Airbus A330, to enter service on Friday, June 4

Hawaiian Airlines (Honolulu) yesterday (June 1) introduced its fleet of the future by welcoming the first of up to 27 new long-range Airbus A330 and A350 aircraft joining the company’s fleet this decade.

HA’s 294-seat Airbus A330-243 N380HA (msn 1104) will inaugurate service on Friday, June 4, on a flight departing Honolulu for Los Angeles.

The new A330 is named for the constellation Makali’i, otherwise known as Pleiades or the Seven Sisters, which guided ancient Polynesian voyagers across the Pacific and was seen high in the sky when Inter-Island Airways (renamed Hawaiian Airlines in 1941) launched its first scheduled flight on November 11, 1929. Each of Hawaiian’s new A330s are being named after a star or constellation used by Polynesian voyagers for celestial navigation.

In keeping with Hawaiian Airlines’ heritage, the ceremony featured a traditional Hawaiian blessing by Kahu Richard Kamanu of Kaumakapili Church, a special ‘oli (Hawaiian chant) created just for the occasion by company employee Keoni Martin, and hula by Halau I Ka Wekiu, led by Kumu Hula Veto Baker and Michael Casupang.

Hawaiian took delivery of Makali’i five weeks ago in a Hawaii-themed acceptance ceremony at the Airbus headquarters in Toulouse, France, that included a group of more than 200 Hawaiian Airlines employees and their guests.

Makali’i made its arrival in Honolulu on May 3 and since then has been undergoing final preparations and training for its introduction into service.

Hawaiian’s second A330, named Hokule’a or “star of gladness,” arrived Saturday, May 29, following a 16-hour nonstop flight from Toulouse to Honolulu.
