British Airways (London) is planning to operate six out of ten long-haul flights and more than half its shorter services from Heathrow, but up to two million people are still expected to be affected by the long-running industrial action by its cabin staff.

This new plan is part of BA’s strike-busting plan to ‘keep BA flying’ and resist the Unite union which the company has termed as “seeking to destroy Britain’s flagship airline with pointless industrial action”.

Delta Air Lines expands New York operations

May 12, 2010

Delta Air Lines Boeing 737-732 WL N304DQ (msn 29683) ATL (Jay Selman), originally uploaded by Airliners Gallery.

Delta Air Lines (Atlanta) announced it is adding more flights between New York City and key global business markets this year, with nearly 30 cities slated for new or expanded service by fall. Expanded routes include:

International – New York-JFK to London-Heathrow; Brussels; Shannon; Manchester; Amsterdam; Cairo; Istanbul; Milan; Moscow; Nice; and Athens, in addition to previously announced new service to Copenhagen and Stockholm and expanded capacity to Tel Aviv and Tokyo-Narita.

Domestic/Canada – New York-LaGuardia to Nashville, St. Louis, Norfolk, Richmond and Kansas City; JFK to San Antonio, Cleveland, Montreal, Charlotte, Toronto, Baltimore and Richmond, in addition to the previously announced introduction of Delta Shuttle service between LaGuardia and Chicago-O’Hare.

International expansion at JFK

Effective Sept. 19, Delta will offer an additional daily flight between JFK and London-Heathrow, expanding its service in the world’s leading business market to three times daily on a year-round basis.

The new London-Heathrow flight will operate with dedicated Boeing 767-400 aircraft featuring Delta’s new full-flat beds in BusinessElite. The service is strategically scheduled to complement existing flight times between New York and Heathrow. Delta’s new flight will depart JFK at 11:05 p.m., complementing existing departures at 6:45 and 9 p.m. The added departure from Heathrow will operate at 12:30 p.m., complementing existing departures at 10:05 a.m. and 5:05 p.m.

Last week, the airline reinstated year-round service from JFK to Shannon and Manchester, and expanded its existing year-round service to Brussels to daily. In June, larger aircraft operating on flights from JFK to Athens, Istanbul, Milan, Moscow, Nice, Tel Aviv and Tokyo-Narita will offer more seats while flights to Cairo will operate daily. And, as previously announced, Delta will introduce the only year-round nonstop service from JFK to Copenhagen and Stockholm beginning May 27.

As part of its joint venture with Air France-KLM, Delta also has reinstated a third daily flight between JFK and the Amsterdam hub to expand connecting opportunities between New York and destinations across Europe, Africa and the Middle East. With more than 230 daily trans-Atlantic flights and a fleet of 135 aircraft, the joint venture between Air France-KLM and Delta offers customers access to nearly 300 destinations in North America and 200 destinations throughout Europe, Asia and Latin America.

Domestic expansion at LaGuardia, JFK:

Domestically, Delta will expand service to 12 cities from New York’s LaGuardia and JFK airports.

Three new business markets will be added beginning Sept. 7 with three new daily round-trip flights between LaGuardia and Nashville, four daily flights between LaGuardia and St. Louis and one daily flight between JFK and San Antonio.

Delta in September also will increase daily service on nine existing routes with added daily flights between LaGuardia and Norfolk, Richmond and Kansas City; and JFK and Cleveland, Charlotte, Baltimore, Richmond, Montreal and Toronto.

Service on each new route will feature First and Economy class, with flights operated on 76-seat Embraer ERJ 175 jets to Nashville and St. Louis and 124-seat Airbus A319 aircraft to San Antonio. Expanded service in existing markets will be operated with a mix of one- and two-class regional jets.

Delta previously announced the expansion of its Delta Shuttle to include service to Chicago-O’Hare beginning June 14, replacing existing flights between LaGuardia and Chicago-Midway. With this addition, Delta will be the only airline offering shuttle service to New York’s top three business markets: Chicago O’Hare, Boston-Logan and Washington, D.C.-Reagan National.

Added First Class service

As part of efforts to increase First Class upgrade opportunities for customers in small- and medium-sized communities, beginning in September Delta will increase the number of dual-class jets operating on weekday flights between LaGuardia and Indianapolis, Columbus, Raleigh-Durham, Birmingham and Madison.

With these additions, Delta will operate the most two-class jet departures of any New York airline, with two-class mainline and regional aircraft serving more than 80 percent of its nonstop New York markets.

Earlier this year, Delta announced it will invest $1 billion through 2013 to improve aircraft and airport facilities throughout its system, with a particular focus in New York and other large business markets.

For domestic customers, these upgrades include adding First Class cabins to 66 Bombardier CRJ 700s operated by Delta Connection carriers ASA, Comair and SkyWest, bringing to 219 the number of regional aircraft with First Class cabins. Internationally, Delta’s upgrades are focused on installing full flat-bed seats in BusinessElite on 90 international widebody aircraft and adding in-seat audio and video on demand throughout Economy class on 68 international aircraft.

Since making a strategic decision to build New York into a hub, Delta has made major investments across the tri-state region, boosting its economic impact to more than $13 billion annually. Along with adding more than 40 new markets from LaGuardia and JFK combined, Delta has created more than 2,000 jobs across the state, invested heavily in New York sponsorships and advertising and completed more than $70 million in facility upgrades at JFK’s Terminals 2 and 3.

A portion of travel for some itineraries may be on Delta Connection carriers ASA (Atlantic Southeast Airlines), Chautauqua Airlines, Comair, Compass Airlines, Freedom Airlines, Mesaba Airlines, Pinnacle Airlines, Shuttle America and SkyWest Airlines.

Boeing begins assembly of the first 747-8 Intercontinental

May 9, 2010

Boeing (Chicago, Seattle, Wichita and Charleston) has announced it has begun assembly of the first 747-8 Intercontinental at the factory in Everett, WA. Late this past week, mechanics took the first step in major assembly for the new airplane by loading its wing panels and spars in the assembly tools. The spar is the internal support structure that runs through the full length of the wing.

Deutsche Lufthansa AG was the first airline to order the new, fuel-efficient passenger airplane, contracting for 20 747-8 Intercontinentals, with purchase rights for an additional 20. “We are very pleased to see that the production on the 747-8 Intercontinental has begun,” said Nico Buchholz, senior vice president, Corporate Fleet of Deutsche Lufthansa AG. “We are looking forward to welcoming the aircraft in our fleet as it is a component of Lufthansa’s strategy to modernize its fleet and increase environmental stewardship. The 747-8 shows our clear commitment to customer orientation.”

The new 747-8 Intercontinental is stretched 18.3 feet (5.6 m) from the 747-400 to provide 467 seats — 51 more than its predecessor — in a three-class configuration. GEnx-2B engines and a new wing design provide airlines a quieter, more fuel-efficient airplane. The 747-8 is 16 percent more fuel efficient and creates a 30 percent smaller noise footprint than its predecessor. The 747-8 also provides nearly equivalent trip costs and 13 percent lower seat-mile costs than the 747-400, plus 26 percent greater cargo volume.

The 747-8 interior incorporates features from the 787 Dreamliner, including a new curved, upswept architecture that gives passengers a greater sense of space and comfort while adding more room for personal belongings. The architecture is accentuated by lighting technology that provides smooth transitions for a more restful flight.

The 747-8, which includes the 747-8 Intercontinental and the 747-8 Freighter, was launched in November 2005.Boeing has 108 orders for the 747-8 — 32 for the 747-8 Intercontinental and 76 for the 747-8 Freighter. The first 747-8 Intercontinental is scheduled to deliver in late 2011.

Spirit Airlines is facing a possible strike in one month as its pilots reject arbitration

May 8, 2010

Spirit Airlines (Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood) is facing a possible strike by its pilots in approximately one month. The pilots, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, International Branch (ALPA) has triggered the start of a 30-day cooling-off period—which could result in a strike in the near future if no agreement is reached—by rejecting the National Mediation Board’s (NMB) proffer of arbitration on Wednesday, May 5. The union now awaits the NMB’s notification of the day on which the 30-day clock starts and the date for a possible strike.

According to the union, the pilots have been in contract negotiations for more than three years, with little or no progress made during this time. In April 2009, 98 percent of the pilots voted to give their leadership the power to call a strike should negotiations continue to stall. During contract talks, the company repeatedly demanded unwarranted concessions, requesting that the pilots take substantial cuts in benefits and work rule protection.

On April 6 and 7, the National Mediation Board (NMB) met with pilot leaders and management representatives in an effort to work out an agreement.

Delta and US Airways will appeal the slot transfer denial by the DOT and the FAA

May 5, 2010

Delta Air Lines (Atlanta) and US Airways (Phoenix) issued the following statement in response to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) announcement that they will reject the airlines’ modified proposal with JetBlue Airways, AirTran Airways, WestJet and Spirit Airlines for a slot transaction at New York’s LaGuardia Airport and Washington’s Reagan National Airport.

“We are disappointed the DOT and FAA rejected a proposal that would provide clear consumer benefits in both the Washington, D.C. and New York markets. There are no winners in this decision – consumers lost, communities lost and our employees lost.  Even our competitors lost.  The Delta-US Airways proposal also would provide expanded access to JetBlue at Washington National Airport and to AirTran, WestJet and Spirit Airlines at New York LaGuardia Airport. Upon review of the just-issued order, we believe the DOT and FAA’s decision is inexplicable and has clearly exceeded their statutory authority.  We intend to appeal this ruling to the U.S. Court of Appeals.”

As previously outlined by Delta and US Airways, the airlines’ proposed transaction would add flights to a number of cities from both the New York and Washington, D.C. markets.

In New York, Delta will add or preserve service to dozens of small- and medium-sized communities while adding service in a number of markets not currently served by US Airways. The airline would also begin a multimillion dollar construction program at LaGuardia to connect the existing Delta and US Airways terminals. Delta has estimated that the transaction will generate as many as 7,000 new jobs in the New York City area driven by the construction of new facilities and the addition of service.

In Washington, D.C., US Airways will add 15 new, daily destinations to its schedule, including eight routes that currently have no daily nonstop service to Reagan National on any airline. US Airways plans to fly to all of the destinations that Delta decides to discontinue as a result of this transaction. The airline also will significantly expand its use of larger dual-class jets by nearly 50 percent at Reagan National.

Delta and US Airways on Aug. 12, 2009 announced their plans to transfer slots at LaGuardia and Reagan National airports. On Feb. 9, 2010, the FAA granted conditional approval of the transaction with a requirement that slots be divested at both airports.  On March 22, 2010, Delta and US Airways submitted to the FAA a modified agreement including the transfer of up to five pairs each of takeoff and landing slots at LaGuardia to AirTran, Spirit and WestJet, and the transfer of five pairs of Reagan National slots to JetBlue Airways.  Under the proposed multi-airline agreement, Delta would operate an additional 110 slot pairs at LaGuardia; AirTran, Spirit and WestJet would obtain five slot pairs each at LaGuardia from Delta and US Airways would acquire 37 slot pairs at Reagan National, while also gaining access to slots at Sao Paulo and Tokyo.

JAL announces route changes, frequency changes and fleet plans for FY2010

May 4, 2010 — 2 Comments

JAL-Japan Airlines Boeing 777-346 ER JA731J (msn 32431) (Sky Eco) LHR (Wingnut), originally uploaded by Airliners Gallery.

JAL-Japan Airlines (Tokyo-Haneda) has announced revisions affecting routes, flight frequencies and its fleet plan for the first half of fiscal year 2010, and decided on plans for the second half of the year ending on March 31, 2011.

JAL has restructured its overall network with the clear objective of returning to profitability as swiftly as possible by creating a solid business model that can withstand the fluctuations in economic conditions and by generating profits without overly relying on future traffic demand. This plan includes the retirement of the Boeing 747-400 and Airbus A300-600 aircraft by the end of this fiscal year, bold withdrawal from several overseas regions, and the drastic contraction in the size of operations. It is formulated to achieve within one year, substantial reductions in the airline’s fixed costs, a target which was initially planned to be accomplished over a period of 3 years.

The airline has decided to discontinue services on 15 international routes with 86 weekly roundtrip flights, as well as on 30 domestic routes with a maximum of 58* daily roundtrip flights. Totaling the changes made since fiscal year 2009, JAL will end operations on 28 international routes with the closure of 11 overseas bases while domestically, 50 routes will be terminated along with 8 offices. The international and domestic passenger capacity (measured in available seat kilometer) will as a result be reduced by 40% and 30% respectively compared to levels in fiscal year 2008.

*56 roundtrip flights if excluding seasonally-operated flights
