Southwest to serve Charleston, SC and Greenville/Spartanburg

Southwest Airlines (Dallas) today announced its intent to serve the state of South Carolina—without subsidies—through the cities of Charleston (CHS) and Greenville/Spartanburg (GSP) in 2011. Southwest will release details regarding the start dates, destinations and fares, and number of departures at a later date. The airline’s service will not be dependent on pending legislation to provide air service subsidies.

Where do you think will the CHS flight be linked with – MDW or BNA ?

Thanks Jan. I think WN will connect (initially) both CHS and GSP with BWI, MDW, BNA, JAX and probably MCO. I think western traffic will be routed through BNA. It will also be interesting to see how US reacts at its CLT fortress hub with its fares to these markets (GSP is only one hour drive away from CLT as you know). If WN starts GSP-MCO (or TPA or FLL), will Allegiant Air drop GSP? In addition it will also be interesting to see if MYR loses traffic to nearby CHS. CHS is now a booming airport with Boeing’s new 787 plant and now WN. Either way the air travel dynamics in South Carolina are due to be radically changed.
