Sunquest Vacations lines-up replacement carriers to replace Skyservice

March 31, 2010

Copyright Photo: TMK Photography.

Sunquest Vacations announced today (March 31) that it has organized replacement flights for all of its customers who might otherwise have been affected by the suspension of operations by Skyservice Airlines (Toronto). Skyservice was placed into receivership by the Ontario Court earlier today.

Skyservice was an independent supplier to Sunquest, which is part of Thomas Cook Group plc, one of the world’s leading travel groups. Since 1995, Skyservice has operated aircraft for Sunquest and other tour operators between Canada and destinations in the Caribbean and Mexico. The only Sunquest flights affected by the Skyservice shut-down originate in Toronto or Winnipeg, and represent less than a third of the remaining flights for Sunquest’s winter program which ends April 30, 2010. No flights were scheduled for today and replacement flights for the coming days have been arranged with other carriers, principally Air Transat and Enerjet.

Seventy percent of Sunquest’s remaining April winter flights are not affected and none of its customers on flights after May 1, 2010 are affected.

Skyservice Airlines goes into receivership and end operations

March 31, 2010

Please click on the AG icon for a direct link to the Skyservice photo gallery.

Skyservice Airlines (Toronto) today (March 31, 2010) ended all operations and entered into receivership (bankruptcy protection).

The last revenue flight was flight 5G 898 from Mexico City to Toronto (Pearson) with Boeing 757-236 C-FLEU (msn 29941). Leased aircraft have already been returned to the U.K. Other airlines are being enlisted to fly some of the charter flights later this week.

Skyservice Airlines has issued the following statement:

“Skyservice Airlines today announced the shutdown of its operations following the appointment of a receiver by the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.

Recent changes in the Canadian vacation tour market combined with Skyservice Airlines’ debt level have rendered the company unable to maintain profitable operations. As a result, one of the company’s secured lenders applied for the appointment of the receiver.

The shutdown results in the cancellation of one flight that was scheduled to depart Canada for the Dominican Republic today and its return leg, as well as all remaining flights scheduled to depart Canada during the balance of the season in April. The company has requested, and the receiver has agreed, to work with the company’s tour operator customers and other lift providers to ensure that passenger issues are resolved promptly.

Skyservice Airlines and the receiver are committed to winding up the business in an orderly and responsible manner. The company and the receiver will continue to treat employees and other stakeholders fairly and in a transparent manner throughout this process.”

US Airways launches Gogo Internet service on A321s

March 30, 2010

US Airways (Phoenix) yesterday (March 29) launched a new wireless Internet product, Gogo® Inflight Internet, on five of its Airbus A321 aircraft. Gogo, which is provided by Aircell, allows passengers to use their laptops or Wi-Fi enabled mobile devices to surf the Web, email friends and family, log into corporate Virtual Private Networks (VPN) and access online entertainment options.

By June 1, all 51 A321s in US Airways’ fleet will be Gogo-equipped. As Wi-Fi is installed on each aircraft between now and June, a Wi-Fi symbol on the outside of the plane at the boarding door will alert passengers that Gogo is available on their flight. The symbol will also appear throughout the cabin next to the seat and row number, and seatback cards will provide instructions on how to access the service. Beginning in late June, US Airways’ passengers will be able to determine if Wi-Fi is available on their flight when they book travel on usairways.com.

At 10,000 feet, US Airways’ flight attendants will make an announcement that passengers can enable their Wi-Fi devices. Passengers can connect to the service by turning on their laptop or mobile device, looking for and connecting to the ‘gogoginflight’ Wi-Fi signal, launching their Web browser, creating a profile and paying for their session with a major credit card.

Boeing completes ultimate-load wing up-bending test on the 787

March 29, 2010

Boeing (Chicago, Seattle, Wichita and Charleston) yesterday (March 28) completed the ultimate-load wing up-bending test on the 787 Dreamliner static test unit. During the testing, loads were applied to the airframe to replicate 150 percent of the most extreme forces the airplane is ever expected to experience while in service. The wings were flexed upward by approximately 25 feet (7.6 meters) during the test.

The initial results of the ultimate-load test are positive. More extensive analysis and review are required before the test can be deemed a success.

Ride a “romantic champagne flight” over Chicago for $10 (in 1968)

March 28, 2010

Reliving Airline History

In 1968 Continental Airlines (Houston) had a small problem. Its relatively new Boeing 720Bs were sitting idle each Saturday night at O’Hare International Airport (ORD), normally a slow period for air travel. The company had an idea. Eager to introduce its new “Proud Bird with the Golden Tail” brand (actually introduced in March 1967 with the first Boeing 727 for Air Micronesia) to encourage more flyers, the company had the idea of offering 45-minute “romantic champagne flights over Chicago” charter flights on the idle Boeing 720Bs. The best part was the price – only $10 for the first passenger and $5 for each additional member of the party. It was a hit with the public.

Marshall Massengale seized the opportunity and invited a classroom date for the “romantic” flight.

Marshall recalls…

“This would have been spring of 1968 and followed closely on the heels of Continental changing their logo and livery to the so-called “meatball” color scheme.  The actual aircraft I flew on was in the old “Golden Jet” (1962) livery, though I had hoped to see the new one.

The flight was a scene from the 1970 blockbuster movie hit “Airport” starring Burt Lancaster, Jacqueline Bisset and Dean Martin. My date and I boarded the Boeing 720B through the aft jetway, the aircraft having been parked parallel to the terminal rather than nosed in. This was the fashion in those days with United, Continental, Eastern and other heavily unionized carriers for whom it may have been more cost-effective to have their jets exit the ramp under their own power rather than to have to maintain union mechanics to “push out” from a nosed in gate position.  By contrast, Delta and American nosed in their jets at ORD to single point, non-pivotal short jetways.  Of course, Delta had to use the traditional exposed, lower level ramp boarding areas at ORD for its Douglas DC-6s, DC-7s and Convair 440 aircraft.  United, at least, was able to use extendable, pivotal jetways to reach prop planes such as their DC-6s and DC-6Bs and even their Viscounts, although most of the time, lower level boarding was the rule more so than the exception.

My date and I were issued regular single flight tickets which were placed in the standard Continental boarding pass ticket jacket marked on the outside in the ubiquitous Litho black grease pencil with gate and boarding time in the manner demonstrated in “Airport”.

I was, of course, intimately familiar with the standard boarding procedures, but my date was not.  It was all new to her but she took it all in stride and exuded an enthusiasm that reminded me of my first passenger flight experience.  In short, I delighted in all of this, knowing I had given my friend her first commercial airline flight experience.  I was very much conscious of the fact she would never forget this experience and was aware that were she ever to be asked about her first flight on a plane, this would be the time she would recall for the rest of her life.

We managed to draw a window and center seat together on the port side in the coach section of the aircraft aft of the wings which afforded a wonderful view of the city.  I remembered how she gripped my arm as the aircraft accelerated on take off but relaxed once airborne.  Thereafter, she delighted in the wonder of the illuminated nighttime panorama that unfolded beneath us.  The flight took us through a number of turns over the sprawling metropolis of Chicago, the sparkling flood of bright city lights ending abruptly against the curving, midnight black silhouette of Lake Michigan.

All too soon, it seemed, the flight was over.  It was the only time I dated this particular classmate of mine, but I never forgot the experience and never regretted the time we spent together on that magical evening.  Knowing I had been able to give someone something special that she would find worth remembering for a lifetime provided its own reward and it has warmed me through the years.”

Thank you Marshall for your fond recollections of this special flight.

Historical Flight Foundation’s Douglas DC-7B N836D receives FAA permission to fly

March 27, 2010

Eastern Air Lines (Historical Flight Foundation) Douglas DC-7B N836D (msn 43545) OPF (Keith Burton) (ready to fly), originally uploaded by Airliners Gallery.

Historical Flight Foundation, Inc. (HFF) (Opa-locka) has received Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) authority to operate its restored Douglas DC-7B N836D (msn 43545) which is painted in the 1940 Falcon colors of Eastern Air Lines (later Eastern Airlines). The FAA granted an exemption to Historical Flight Foundation to operate the classic airliner effective March 23, 2010.

According to the press release, “The FAA finds that a grant of exemption would be in the public interest and would provide an equivalent level of safety to that provided by current regulation.”

The HFF is unique in that its Douglas Aircraft Company DC-7B aircraft represents the only U.S. based, four engine, passenger propliner in operation today. With the advent of jet aircraft, most of the DC-7B aircraft disappeared from commercial airline service by the early 1970′s. The majority of the DC-7 were simply scrapped as they were seen as being un-economical to operate. In this unique case, the aircraft being operated by the HFF was still in its original passenger configuration as delivered to Eastern Air Lines in January 1958. Of the 112 DC-7 aircraft produced, this is the only surviving passenger configuration aircraft.

Signed: John W. McGraw, Acting Director, Flight Standards Service

The HFF sincerely appreciates the great effort on the part of the FAA to promote the living history program it has been approved for. The HFF is an IRS certified 501(c)(3) not for profit organization. The airplane will be touring the continental USA in the years ahead creating a passion for aviation not seen for a long time.We will be taking reservations deposits on a first come first served basis. Contact the HFF for details.

The announcement date for the Christening and Inaugural Flight will be made in the forthcoming weeks.

British Airways’ cabin crews stage a second strike

March 27, 2010

British Airways’ (London) cabin crews began a four-day strike today (March 27), the second walkout this month that will cost the company millions of pounds and lead to more travel chaos before the busy Easter holiday period.

British said its contingency plans would mean that 75 percent of its customers would be able to fly despite the action. BA is hiring-in other carriers and aircraft to fly a large portion of its schedule.

The Unite Union said the ongoing and increasingly bitter dispute was damaging the airline’s finances and reputation.

However in March 2007 Highland Airways underwent a management buyout from Atlantic Holdings led by A. Mossman but retained the livery until the end.

Highland Airways (UK) (Inverness) went into receivership (bankruptcy protection) today (March 25) and has suspended all operations.

The airline was established and started operations in 1991 as Air Alba, operating for four years as a flying school. The company was renamed Highland Airways in February 1997 and expanded into scheduled operations. It was operating eight BAe Jetstream 31s, two Jetstream 41s and a single Britten-Norman Islander.

US Airways seeks tarmac delay exemption for PHL

March 25, 2010

US Airways (Phoenix) according to CNN has joined other carriers in filing for an exemption from the tarmac delay rule going into effect next month. The airline has asked the Department of Transportation (DOT) for a waiver to the rule for its Philadelphia hub.

The rule, set to go into effect on April 29, could fine the airlines $27,500 per passenger on domestic flights that sit on the tarmac for more than three hours with passengers on board.

US Airways joins Delta Air Lines, American Airlines and Continental Airlines in supporting a request by JetBlue Airways for a waiver at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, which Continental expanded to include the New York area’s other major airports — Newark Liberty International and LaGuardia.

A construction project that has shut down one of JFK’s runways prompted the initial requests.

US Airways wants an exemption for PHL ”because it shares the same airspace, is part of the same air traffic control center (New York Center), and has the same congestion challenges as JFK, LaGuardia and Newark,” according to a document filed with the Department of Transportation (DOT).

Boeing Comments on WTO’s Landmark Decision on Airbus Subsidies

March 24, 2010

Boeing (Chicago, Seattle, Wichita and Charleston) issued the following statement following news reports quoting officials who indicated that the United States has prevailed on all of the major issues in the WTO’s final decision, which reaffirms its earlier interim decision, in the U.S. case against European subsidies to Airbus.

“This is a powerful, landmark judgment and good news for aerospace workers across America who for decades have had to compete against a heavily subsidized Airbus. U.S. officials have estimated the commercial value to Airbus of all the government launch aid subsidies it has received at more than $178 billion (in 2006 dollars).  Government subsidies have been used to support the creation of every Airbus product, including the A330/A340, which received more than$5 billion in development aid, and the A380, which received $4 billion in subsidies. Those and other European government subsidies to Airbus have significantly distorted the global market for large commercial airplanes, causing adverse effect to Boeing and costing America tens of thousands of high-tech jobs.

“We appreciate the strong bipartisan efforts by both the executive and legislative branches of the U.S. government to right this wrong and ensure that America’s aerospace workers get a fair shake. Because of the U.S. government’s undiminished resolve to end illegal subsidies, this decision should level the competitive playing field once and for all with Airbus, as well as set an important precedent for other nations with aspirations to enter the commercial airplane business.

“Airbus and its sponsor governments continue to re-affirm their commitment to using subsidized launch aid to fund the next Airbus airplane, the A350.  We urge them to change course and fully comply with the WTO’s clear ruling.  The WTO panel has painstakingly and professionally reviewed all of the evidence that’s been presented the past four years. It is extremely important to international trade and global economic growth that governments and businesses abide by the WTO’s rules. Markets, not parliaments, should pick the winners in the global aerospace industry.”
