Bangladesh Airlines (formerly Biman Bangladesh Airlines) (Dhaka) will introduce the euroAtlantic Airways-operated Boeing 777-200 in the new livery on February 6 between Dhaka and London (Heathrow). The new type will also be introduced to Singapore two days later.

Qatar Airways announces starting dates for four new destinations

Qatar Airways (Doha) has announced the starting dates for four new destinations from DOH. Copenhagen (four times weekly) will be added on March 30 followed by Ankara (four times weekly) on April 5. Tokyo (Narita) (daily) will come on line on April 26. Finally Barcelona will be added on June 7.

Air France to sell two new Boeing 777F freighters to FedEx Express

Air France (Paris) has signed a letter of intent to sell two new Boeing 777F freighters to FedEx Corporation (Memphis), a spokesman for Air France told Dow Jones Newswires. The new 777Fs have not yet been delivered to AF and the sale will not affect the current 777F fleet.

Continental and two employees go on trial for the Concorde crash

Continental Airlines (Houston) and two of its employees will go on trial next week in France for manslaughter of 113 people involved in the Air France Concorde crash of July 25, 2000. A former French civil aviation official and two senior members of the Concorde program will also be tried on the same charge on Tuesday in a court near Paris, with proceedings expected to last four months.

TAM Airlines (TAM Linhas Aereas) is in talks to buy a share of LAN Airlines

TAM Airlines (TAM Linhas Aereas) is in talks to acquire a share of LAN Airlines (Santiago) owned by President-elect Sebastian Pinera, Brazilian magazine Exame reported late on Thursday on its website according to Reuters. TAM is interested in acquiring a 19 percent stake in LAN held by Pinera’s holding company Axxion.

Continental to increase Newark-London flights

Continental Airlines (Houston) announced yesterday that it will increase its schedule of flights between its New York hub at Newark Liberty International Airport and London (Heathrow) during 2010. The airline will add a fourth daily service to the route in March and a fifth daily service in October, bringing the total number of Continental daily departures to Heathrow to seven, including its twice-daily service from Houston (Bush Intercontinental).

In addition, Continental announced that effective June 1, 2010 all aircraft scheduled for Heathrow flights will feature new, flat bed seats in BusinessFirst.

In other news, Continental Airlines’ flight CO 881 yesterday operating from the Newark hub to Bogota diverted to Jacksonville due to a passenger with a similar name on the No Fly List. The Boeing 737 landed without incident at JAX at approximately 5:45 p.m. (1745) local time. The passenger was cleared and the flight proceeded without further incident to BOG.


Boeing conducts the first 787 stall tests

Boeing (Chicago, Seattle, Wichita and Charleston) 787 Dreamliner pilots conducted the program’s first stall tests in which pilots intentionally reduce power to both engines and then recover normal flight speeds as part of the initial airworthiness program for the airplane. Additional stall tests will take place throughout the flight test period.

Neos (Milan-Malpensa) has added “Science for Peace” stickers to its Boeing 767-306 ER EI-DOF (msn 27610). Science for Peace is a Toronto-based organization of scientists working together to promote world peace. The organization was co-founded by mathematical psychologist Anatol Rapoport and physicist Eric Fawcett, both former professors at the University of Toronto.

FedEx Express (Memphis) is donating its logistical services to transport two giant pandas from the United States to China on February 4, 2010. Working in conjunction with the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, D.C. and Zoo Atlanta, FedEx Express will fly the pandas non-stop from Washington’s Dulles International Airport to Chengdu, China.

Tai Shan, a 4-and-a-half-year-old male panda born at the National Zoo, and Mei Lan, a 3-year-old female panda born at Zoo Atlanta, will travel onboard a custom-decaled FedEx Express 777 Freighter (777F) – known as the “FedEx Panda Express.”

FedEx Express will fly Mei Lan from Atlanta to Washington, D.C., where she will join Tai Shan in preparation for the trans-Atlantic flight. Onboard the 777F aircraft – which is solely dedicated to the pandas’ journey – Tai Shan and Mei Lan will travel in two custom-built transport containers provided by FedEx Express. The pandas will depart Washington, D.C. late morning on February 4 and arrive in Chengdu late afternoon on February 5, approximately 14 ½ hours between take-off and landing.

Boeing 777-FS2 N850FD (msn 37721) has been selected as the aircraft to wear the special “Panda Express” markings.

Quantum Air ceases all operations

Quantum Air (La Compania Quantum Air S.A.) (Madrid) on January 26 ceased all operations. The company originally started operations on July 4, 2000 with an initial fleet of three Boeing 717-200s under the AeBal (Aerolineas Baleares) brand. It was initially owned by Spanair (51 percent) and the GAS Group )(49 percent). However AeBal (Spanair Link) ceased operations on September 16, 2008 as part of the Spanair restructuring plan. SAS sold the company in January 2009 to Proturin, a Spanish investment company. In March 2009, AeBal was reorganized as Quantum Air.

LAN Peru to serve San Francisco

LAN Airlines (Peru) (Lima), an affiliate of LAN Airlines (Santiago), will initiate operations to Peru out of San Francisco. The company will offer four flights per week to Lima on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday starting on July 1.

WestJet to serve Samana in the Dominican Republic

WestJet Airlines (Calgary) continues to expand into the Caribbean. The company announced it will begin weekly seasonal non-stop service between Toronto and Samana, Dominican Republic, on June 5, 2010. The airline currently serves Punta Cana, Puerto Plata and La Romana with a total of seven non-stop flights per week from Toronto’s Pearson International Airport.

WestJet will also begin weekly seasonal service between Montreal (Trudeau) and Punta Cana on June 5, 2010.

Continental Express to add new routes from Cleveland to Green Bay and Norfolk on May 2

UAL Corporation loses $1.1 billion in 2009

UAL Corporation (United Airlines) (Chicago) reported results for the fourth quarter ended December 31, 2009 and 2009. The company:

  • Reported a fourth quarter net loss of $176 million, excluding non-cash, net mark-to-market hedge gains and certain accounting charges as outlined in note 6 of the attached statement of consolidated operations, narrowing its net loss by $391 million compared to the fourth quarter of 2008. The company reported a GAAP net loss of $240 million.
  • Reported a full year 2009 net loss of $1.1 billion, excluding non-cash, net mark-to-market hedge gains and certain accounting charges, an improvement of $645 million compared to the full year 2008. The company reported a full year 2009 GAAP net loss of $651 million, an improvement of $4.7 billion compared to full year 2008.

LAN Airlines earns $231.1 million in 2009

LAN Airlines (Santiago) reported net income of $231.1 million for full year 2009. Net income declined 31.3% compared to full year 2008.

For the full year 2009 LAN’s operating margin reached 11.9%, a decrease of 2.6 points compared to the 14.5% operating margin achieved in 2008. Operating income amounted to $435.7 million in 2009, a 29.7% decrease compared to operating income of $619.8 million in 2008. Operating income for 2009 includes a $128.7 million loss related to fuel hedging.

LAN’s fourth quarter 2009 results reflect a strong recovery in both cargo and passenger operations. During the period, LAN reported net income of $109.8 million, a 17.6% increase compared to net income of $93.3 million reported in the fourth quarter 2008.

Air Canada expands to seven more U.S. destinations

Air Canada (Montreal) this spring, will offer new daily service between Toronto and seven more American cities including: Orange County (Santa Ana) and San Diego, Portland, OR; Memphis, Cincinnati, Portland, ME; and Syracuse.

Air Canada is also adding four new international destinations from Toronto this summer. The airline has announced it will begin flying to Athens, Barcelona, and Copenhagen, and offer same-plane, direct service to Brussels through Montreal.

Delta loses $1.24 billion in 2009

Delta Air Lines (Atlanta) reported financial results for the December quarter and full year 2009.  Key points include:

  • Delta’s net loss excluding special items for the December 2009 quarter was $225 million.  This result is $285 million better than the prior year quarter on a combined basis excluding special items.
  • Delta’s net loss was $25 million for theDecember 2009 quarter.
  • Delta’s net loss for 2009 was $1.2 billion, including $169 million in special items.  Excluding special items and $1.4 billion of fuel hedge losses, Delta’s net profit for 2009 was $291 million.
  • Delta ended 2009 with $5.4 billion in unrestricted liquidity, a $400 million increase year over year.
  • Delta continued its successful integration of Northwest Airlines and received approval from the Federal Aviation Administration for a single operating certificate at year end.

American Eagle adds Asheville-DFW seasonal flights

AirTran reports a record net profit in 2009

AirTran Holdings (Orlando), the parent company of AirTran Airways, reported net income of $134.7 million for the full-year 2009 and net income of $17.1 million or $0.11 per diluted share for the fourth quarter of 2009. These results represent an all-time record for annual net income with an improvement of over $400 million as compared to last year.  Operating income was $177.0 million and is also a record for the Company.

Ethiopian Airlines’ (Addis Ababa) crash yesterday morning in Beirut is becoming a mystery. The pilot in command of the aircraft was unable to follow flight instructions from ATC and made a sharp turn before plunging into the Mediterranean Sea.

Turkish Airlines (Istanbul) as the official sponsor of Futbol Club (FC) Barcelona (Barcelona Soccer Club), is supporting the team with a new logojet. The football club was founded in 1899 by a group of Swiss, English and Spanish men under the direction of Joan Gamper. FC Barcelona is one of only three clubs never to have been relegated from La Liga and the most successful club in Spanish football after Real Madrid.

Delta to spend $1 billion to improve the fleet

Delta Air Lines (Atlanta) will invest $1 billion, or about $300 million per year, through mid-2013 to improve the customer experience in the air and on the ground. The capital investment will improve the consistency and level of service provided to Delta’s BusinessElite, First Class and elite-level flyers, as well as increasing the efficiency of the airline’s fleet. Planned enhancements include:

  • Installing full flat-bed seats in BusinessElite on 90 trans-oceanic aircraft, including 14 Boeing 767-400 ERs, 52 Boeing 767-300 ERs, 16 Boeing 747-400s and eight Boeing 777-200 ERs. Upon completion, each of these fleets will have full flat bed seats on all aircraft.
  • Adding in-seat audio and video on demand throughout Economy Class on 16 Boeing 747-400 and 52 Boeing 767-300 ER aircraft. With these additions, Delta will offer personal, in-seat entertainment for both BusinessElite and Economy class customers on all wide-body aircraft.
  • Adding First Class cabins to 66 CRJ700 aircraft operated by Delta Connection carriers ASA, Comair and SkyWest, bringing to 219 the number of regional aircraft with First Class seating.
  • Completing the modification of 269 pre-merger Northwest aircraft to feature Delta’s signature blue leather seats, updated lighting and enhanced cabin amenities such as increased overhead bin space on pre-merger Northwest Boeing 757-200s.
  • Installing winglets on more than 170 Boeing 767-300 ER, 757-200 and 737-800 aircraft to extend aircraft range and improve fuel efficiency by as much as five percent.
  • Renovating and expanding Delta’s Los Angeles Sky Club lounge, and introducing new Sky Club locations in Seattle, Philadelphia and Indianapolis.

Allegiant Travel Company (Allegiant Air) (Las Vegas) reported net income for the fourth quarter of $10.5 million (down 42 percent from $18.2 million a year ago). However for the entire year of 2009 it reported net income of $76.3 million (up 115.6 percent from $35.4 million in 2008).

LOT Polish Airlines introduces a new livery for its LOT Charters division

LOT Polish Airlines (Warsaw) in December 2009 introduced this new “sunny face” livery on its Boeing 737-4Q8 SP-LLK (msn 25740). This new color scheme replaces the now dated Centralwings livery worn by the charter division.

Wreckage and bodies of two crew found in ACE Beech 1900C crash in Sand Point, AK

ACE-Alaska Central Express (Anchorage) had an accident around midnight on Thursday (January 21) in the remote village of Sand Point, Alaska. The Beech 1900C-1 (N112AX, msn UC-45) with two pilots on board was carrying fish and mail to the ANC base. The freighter crashed on takeoff. The wreckage and bodies have now been discovered in about 30 to 40 feet of water.

Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737-8AS ET-ANB crashes into the sea off of Lebabnon

Ethiopian Airlines (Addis Ababa) tragically lost its ex-Ryanair Boeing 737-8AS ET-ANB (msn 29935, ex EI-CSW) this morning (January 25) off the coast of Lebanon (not newly-acquired ET-AMZ). ET-ANB was built in 2002 and was delivered to Ethiopian on September 12, 2009. Flight ET 409 had just departed Beirut en route to Addis Ababa with 90 passengers and crew on board. There were reports of thunderstorms in the area. Search crews are looking for debris and any possible survivors.

Ethiopian issued this initial press release:

07:02 AM – Local Time

Ethiopian flight ET-409 scheduled to operate from Beirut to Addis Ababa on January 25th lost contact with the Lebanese air controllers shortly after take off. The flight departed at 02:35 Lebanese time from Beirut International Airport.

Flight ET-409 carries 82 passenger plus 8 Ethiopian Crew members. Out of the total passengers 23 are Ethiopian, 51 Lebanese, 1 Turkish, 1 French, 2 British, 1 Russian, 1 Canadian, 1 Syrian, 1 Iraqi nationals.

A team is already working on gathering all pertinent information. An investigative team has already been dispatched to the scene and we will release further information as further updates are received.

Bangladesh Airlines introduces a new livery

Bangladesh Airlines (Dhaka) has introduced a new color scheme which eliminates the traditional Biman name. This Boeing 777-212 ER is the first Triple Seven for the company. A Boeing 737-800 and Airbus A310-300 has also been painted in the new livery.

Taban Air Tupolev Tu-154M RA-85787 crashes and burns in Mashhad, Iran

Taban Air’s (Tehran) Tupolev Tu-154M RA-85787 (msn 93A971) has crashed and burned on landing at Mashhad, Iran this morning (January 24). There were reports of 43 injured passengers and crew.
