Frontier Airlines (2nd) (Denver) last night (November 14) had an incident at Kansas City. An Airbus A319 operating flight F9 820 from MCI to Denver hit a flock of birds shortly after takeoff. The jetliner was forced to safely return to MCI. The flight was cancelled.

SAT Airlines (Sakhalin Airlines) (Sakhalinskie Aviatrassy) (Sakhalin) added its first Boeing 737-500 on October 29, 2009. The company was established as a result of the reorganisation of the Sakhalin United Detachment. The Asian airline started operations on April 20, 1992. It is owned totally by the Government of the Russian Federation. The 737-500 joins two other 737-200s.

British Airways and Iberia agree to merge

British Airways (London) and Iberia (Madrid) have agreed to merge under a preliminary agreement styled after the Air France-KLM model. The two airlines will creat a holding company that will own both airlines. BA stockholders will own 55 percent of the new holding company and IB stockholders will own the remaining 45 percent. Both airlines will retain their separate AOCs and brand for at least five years. The new entity will maintain two hubs at London Heathrow and Madrid. Both companies hope to finalize the deal before the end of 2010 but the deal is far from final due to BA’s pension deficit which could scuttle the deal.

RwandAir (Kigali) had an odd incident today in Kigali with a reported Bombardier CRJ100. Although details are still sketchy according to this published report the airliner slammed into the side of the terminal building. Passengers and crew members were taken to local hospitals.

Kingfisher Airlines’ (Bangalore and Mumbai) ATR 72-212A (ATR 72-500) VT-KAC (msn 729) skidded off the runway at Mumbai (BOM) while landing yesterday (November 10). There were no injuries but there is extensive damage to the aircraft.

United Airlines (Chicago) has suspended the allegedly drunken pilot who was getting ready to fly the Boeing 767-300 as flight UA 949 from London (Heathrow) to Chicago (O’Hare) with 124 passengers and 11 crew members on Monday (November 11). The pilot is also facing UK charges.

Midwest Airlines (subsidiary of Republic Airways Holdings) (Milwaukee) retired its last Boeing 717 operated by Midwest Airlines crews on November 2, ending 25 years as an airline. The airline surrendered its AOC the following day. It now becomes a marketing brand (now a virtual airline). Other airlines in the Republic Airways Holdings family will operate under the Midwest brand from Milwaukee.
