US Airways to cut 1,000 jobs, realigns network

October 29, 2009

US Airways (Phoenix) announced yesterday (October 28) it is realigning its operations to focus on the airline’s core network strengths, which include hubs in Charlotte (CLT), Philadelphia (PHL) and Phoenix (PHX), and a focus city at Washington’s National Airport (DCA). These four cities, as well as the airline’s hourly Shuttle service between New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA), Boston (BOS) and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), will serve as the cornerstone of the airline’s network. By the end of 2010 this new network will represent 99 percent of the airline’s available seat miles (ASMs) versus roughly 93 percent today.

Here are the major points from the press release:

US Airways is making the following changes to facilitate the realignment strategy, which dictates matching the airline’s schedule and operation to customer demand:

  • Reducing Las Vegas (LAS) flights from 64 to 36 daily departures by February 2010 as a result of high fuel prices and continued weak demand associated with the Las Vegas market.
  • Closing stations in Colorado Springs (COS) and Wichita (ICT) and moving that flying to more profitable routes across its three hubs.
  • Redeploying the airline’s 15 Embraer ERJ 190s on routes between Boston (BOS) and Philadelphia and on the Boston-LaGuardia (LGA) leg of the US Airways Shuttle.
  • Suspending five European destinations from US Airways’ international gateway in Philadelphia, given the weakness in trans-Atlantic revenue: Birmingham, U.K. (BHX); London Gatwick, U.K. (LGW); Milan, Italy (MXP); Shannon, Ireland (SNN); and Stockholm, Sweden (ARN). Seasonal service to Brussels, Belgium (BRU) and Zurich, Switzerland (ZRH) will transition to year-round service in late 2010.
  • Returning its Philadelphia-Beijing (PEK) flight authority to the Department of Transportation (DOT) until economic conditions improve, while retaining the option to reapply for this authority in the future.
  • Rightsizing and repositioning its crew bases in Philadelphia, Charlotte, Phoenix and Washington, D.C. by closing crew bases in Boston, LaGuardia and Las Vegas. The Las Vegas and LaGuardia bases are expected to close on January 31, 2010, and Boston will close on May 2, 2010.

As part of the initiatives outlined above, US Airways will reduce its staffing by approximately 1,000 positions across its system during the first half of 2010. These reductions include approximately 600 airport passenger and ramp service positions, approximately 200 pilot positions and approximately 150 flight attendant positions.

United issues press release on last Boeing 737 flight

October 27, 2009

United Airlines (Chicago) has issued the following Skynet Press Release:

“United’s last Boeing 737 – the beloved “guppy” that served our airline and millions of customers well for more than 41 years – will retire from revenue service at the end of October, in line with the fleet retirement plans announced in the fall of 2008.

The B737-322 has been specifically numbered “UA737” for its final journey on October 28.  The flight will depart Washington Dulles at approximately 6 a.m. with stops in Chicago, Denver and Los Angeles, then on to San Francisco for the decommissioning work at the maintenance base before being transported to Victorville, Calif., for storage.

Given that literally thousands of United’s employees have touched these aircraft over the years, both above and below the wing, plans are being made for teams at each of the hubs to commemorate the event during the respective ground service times.

The decision to retire all 94 of the B737s enabled United to take important proactive steps in reducing capacity at a time when fuel costs had hit record-high levels. That, along with the removal of six older B747s, positioned United at the forefront of the industry in adjusting capacity to help increase pricing power – a step that is still serving us well, given the weakened economy and demand as well as fuel prices that continue to be volatile.

United introduced its first B737-222 into revenue service in April 1968, adding the B737-300s in 1986 and the B737-500s in 1990. The fleet, which totaled more than 220 aircraft at one point, have since become our oldest and least fuel-efficient jets. By retiring the aircraft, we have now simplified our total fleet in terms of overall maintenance cost and reduced the future investment required to maintain a modern fleet, giving us one of the youngest fleets in the industry.

The decision also positively impacts our customers, as the B737s were generating the lowest customer satisfaction scores among our narrowbodies and operating at lower overall reliability levels.”
