JAL-Japan Airlines (Tokyo-Haneda) is coming under increased pressure to remain totally under Japanese ownership rather than having a foreign investor. The Japanese government is ready to support the ailing flag carrier and believes JAL can revive on its own.

Oromia Airways is formed in Ethiopia

Oromia Airways (Addis Ababa) is a new airline formed in Ethiopian by an Ethiopian singer of Oromo music (hence the name) and two Ethiopian businessmen. The new airline plans to commence domestic and international operations before the end of the year.

South African Airways (Johannesburg) reported a net profit of $53.4 million for its fiscal year. The company is also planning to lease six Airbus A330-200s to replace its A340-200s.

British Airways (London) yesterday (September 29) launched its historic London (City) to New York (JFK) flights via a refueling stop at Shannon. BA is using the historic BA 001 to BA 004 flight numbers previously used by the Concorde.

British Airways (London) tomorrow (September 29) will launch new Airbus A318 business class service (with 32 seats) from downtown City Airport in London to New York (JFK) via Shannon. Passengers will clear U.S. Customs at Shannon while the airliner is being refueled.

Canadian North (Yellowknife) is cutting some flights from Yellowknife due to increased competition. The carrier will drop the Yellowknife-Calgary route on October 10 and the Yellowknife-Hay River route on October 25.

Midwest Airlines (Milwaukee) will seasonally return to Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood on December 17 (through April 19) from Milwaukee. The reinstated route will be flown as a Midwest Connect flight with Embraer ERJ 170s operated by sister airline Republic Airlines (2nd) (Indianapolis). Midwest will also have Republic operate the Kansas City-Fort Myers route also from December 17 through April 19, 2010.

FedEx Express (Memphis) yesterday (September 22) took delivery of its first Boeing 777F freighter (777-FS2, N850FD, msn 37721). The 777F will fly between the United States and Asia. The 777F will be capable of flying 5,800 nautical miles, 2,100 nm further than the McDonnell Douglas MD-11F it will replace.

Global Aviation (Johannesburg) has provided more details on their worldwide tour that will visit 52 countries and fly a total of 31,000 miles.

Here is the press release:

O.R. Tambo International Airport-based fleet operator, Global Aviation, waved farewell to its newly refurbished Coca-Cola FIFA World Cup Trophy Africa Tour McDonnell Douglas DC-9-32 on Sunday September 19th. The aircraft departed for Zurich to collect the famous FIFA World Cup Trophy to begin an African continent-wide, 76-day trophy tour. Mr. Daniel Rosenzweig, Global Aviation’s Commercial Director, issued a statement saying that Global Aviation is delighted to participate in a small way in this exciting event. Sponsored by Coca-Cola and FIFA, Global Aviation’s DC-9 jet will be calling at most African nations to meet representatives of Coca-Cola’s extensive African distribution network as well as government and national soccer team members. First stop after collecting the trophy in Zurich will be Cairo in Egypt, where the DC-9 will stop over for two days. A total of 52 countries will be visited and the aircraft will fly a distance of over 31, 000 miles. Total flight time is expected to 76 hours. Coca-Cola has purchased carbon-dioxide permits to ensure that the tour is carbon neutral. The aircraft has been specially configured to carry 24 passengers in a First Class layout. The cabin has been divided into three sections with the forward compartment laid out as a VIA area for TV interviews and to host both FIFA and Coca-Cola delegates and guests. A central section has been configured for passengers and a rear compartment will be used as a team changing room. Mr. Daniel Rosenzweig, Global Aviation’s Commercial Director, express his appreciation to the South African Civil Aviation Association (SA CAA) for their help and assistance in preparation of this tour. Global Aviation was founded in 2001 to provide aircraft on a contractual basis to world airlines in need of temporary capacity. The company also provides the acquisition, heavy maintenance, refurbishment and specialized passenger charter services both in Africa and other parts of the world. Global Aviation presently owns nine Douglas DC-9 aircraft, three DC-10s and one McDonnell Douglas DC-9-82 (MD-82).

Global Aviation (Johannesburg) brought their McDonnell Douglas DC-9-32 ZS-GAJ (msn 47730) to Zurich last night after a long ferry flight from Johannesburg. The crew arrived in Switzerland to pick up the FIFA World Cup Trophy for a world tour before the next World Cup in South Africa in 2010. The airliner wears a special “FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour by Coca-Cola” color scheme. Additional details on the world tour schedule are welcome. ZS-GAJ was originally delivered to Garuda as PK-GNO on August 13, 1976 and later served with Midwest Express Airlines (now Midwest Airlines) as N209ME. The world tour will start in Africa with the first city being Cairo. The African portion will be 76 days alone!

QANTAS’ 75th 737 arrives in New Zealand

QANTAS Airways’ (Sydney) 75th Boeing 737 arrived yesterday (September 21) at Auckland with a special decal. Boeing 737-838 ZK-ZQA (msn 34200, ex VH-VZF) is also named for New Zealand aviator Jean Batten and will be operated by subsidiary JetConnect on trans-Tasman services.

According to the new website, the subsidiary “was launched to offer customers the very best flying experience when travelling on holiday. Air Libya (Benghazi) has brought on line and painted this ex-Air Algerie Boeing 727-2D6 registered 5A-DKV (msn 22374) in the full 2003 colors. Air Libya is privately owned and was originally established in 1995 as Tibesti Air Libya (Tripoli). The company now operates charter flights in support of the Libya oil industry. 5A-DKV is used on passenger charter operations and is part of a diminishing network of passenger operators of the trijet.
