Lufthansa receives final approval for Austrian

Lufthansa (Frankfurt) yesterday (August 28) was given EU Commission approval to acquire the Austrian Airlines Group. Austrian Airlines (Vienna), Lauda Air and Tyrolean Airways (Austrian Arrows) will be integrated into the Lufthansa Group in September.

Air Canada to add Athens and Barcelona

Air Canada (Montreal) is planning to add new service to Athens and Barcelona from both Montreal and Toronto in the summer of 2010.  Boeing 767-300 ERs will be operated on the new routes.

AmeriJet International to fly through IBT strike

QANTAS Airways (Sydney) on August 24 took delivery of its fourth Airbus A380-842 registered VH-OQD (msn 26). The new airliner is named “Fergus McMaster” after one of its founders and its first chairman. The new addition will permit the company to increase frequency on the Sydney-Singapore-London and Sydney-Los Angeles routes.

Airberlin is considering canceling Boeing 787s

Airberlin (Berlin-Tegel) is considering canceling its order for 25 Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners as it reassesses its long-range strategy along with the delivery delays. On the financial side, the company saw a 33 percent increase in profits in the second quarter to $25 million.

British Airways celebrated 90 years on August 25

British Airways (London) tracing its lineage back to Air Transport and Travel (AT & T), celebrated 90 years of scheduled airline service on August 25. The first flight on August 25, 1919 connected the London area with the Paris area.

ExpressJet Airlines (Continental Express) (Houston) and Continental Airlines (Houston) applauded the report by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) on the widely-reported tarmac delay of flight CO 2816 at Rochester, MN. The flight crew repeatedly tried to deplane the passengers and crew but were denied access to a gate.

Air Canada (Montreal) will link its Montreal (Trudeau) hub with new Star Alliance partner Continental Airlines’ (Houston) Houston (Bush Intercontinental) hub starting on November 30. The new route will be assigned to Bombardier CRJ705s operated by Air Canada Jazz.

Ryanair (Dublin) has decided to add more routes from Leeds/Bradford, the home of rival low-cost carrier Jet2.com. Two Boeing 737-800s will be based at LBA. Ryanair will now serve 8 of 14 routes from LBA currently operated by Jet2.com.
