Emirates Airline (Dubai) will operate the Airbus A380 into Birmingham (UK) for one flight on one day on September 9 in celebration of the 70th Anniversary of the airport according to ATW.

Skywings International (Skopje) is a new airline based in Macedonia. It was due today (July 19) to commence operations with a leased Boeing 737-33A (Z3-AAJ, msn 23827, ex D-AHIG) leased from and operated by Hamburg International (Hamburg) in full Skywings colors. The new airline was due to fly the inaugural flight today from Skopje to Podgorica. Its website is also advertising scheduled flights from Skopje to Berlin, Brussels, Cologne, Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Rome and Stuttgart and also from Ohrid to Amsterdam and Dusseldorf.
Jet2 (Jet2.com) (Leeds/Bradford) has added ex-bmibaby Boeing 737-33A G-TOYE (msn 27455) as G-CGET.

World Airways (Atlanta) has extended its contract with Allied Air Cargo (Lagos) to operate a McDonnell Douglas MD-11F freighter now through December 2011. The MD-11F operates on a cargo route from Ostend to Lagos onward to Nairobi and then return for Allied. Allied currently operates four Boeing 727-200F freighters. The contract started on October 1, 2008.

JetAmerica (2nd) (St. Petersburg/Clearwater and Toledo) appears to be a non-starter. Yesterday (July 17) JetAmerica stopped selling tickets and promised to give full refunds to those who had already purchased tickets from the public charter company. The company had originally set July 13 as its launch date and then pushed it back to August 14 as it attempted to obtain slots at Newark and Washington. It was planning to use Boeing 737-800s leased from Miami Air.

Siem Reap Air (subsidiary of Bangkok Air) (Phnom Penh) remains grounded as a result of still being blacklisted by the European Union. The EU has not lifted the ban on the Cambodian airline. The carrier suspended operations on November 24, 2008.
Cambodia Angkor Air (Phnom Penh) is Cambodia’s latest attempt to have a successful flag carrier. This new attempt is a joint venture between the government of Cambodia and Vietnam Airlines (Hanoi). The airline will start scheduled operations on July 27 from the new Preah Sihanouk International Airport (formerly named the Kang Keng Airport) to Siem Reap with two ATR 72s leased from Vietnam. However the airline is expected to operate Airbus A320s and A321s later this year to international destinations.
Air India (Mumbai) is expected to get a government loan to help it survive. AI is also planning to cancel seven of nine Boeing 777-300 ERs still on order.

Fly Kumba (Harare) is destined to be Zimbabwe’s first low cost airline. It is planning to launch scheduled operations in September with Boeing 737-200s. It will initially operate on the Harare-Johannesburg and Bulawayo-Johannesburg routes.

AirTran Airways (Orlando and Atlanta) has completed the installation of the Gogo Internet system on all 136 aircraft. It now offers Wifi service on its entire fleet.
Caspian Airlines (Tehran) lost one its Tupolev Tu-154M EP-CPG (msn 87A748) this morning on flight RV 7908 between Tehran and Yerevan. All 168 passengers and crew died in the crash. The airliner crashed in a field creating a crater after takeoff from Tehran, approximately 75 miles northwest of Tehran in the village of Jannatabad.

Southwest Airlines’ (Dallas) flight WN 2294 operating last evening (July 13) with Boeing 737-3H4 N387SW (msn 26602) between Nashville and Baltimore/Washington (BWI) was forced to make an emergency landing at Charleston, WV after a one foot by one foot wide hole was discovered in the rear fuselage top (passengers could see the sky)! WN is inspecting its entire 737-300 fleet.

Frontier Airlines (2nd) (Denver) has received bankruptcy court approval to sell the company to Republic Airways Holding if there are no other offers. If additional offers are received an auction for the airline will be conducted on August 11.
China Eastern Airlines (Shanghai) through a swap of shares will acquire and merge Shanghai Airlines (Shanghai) for $1.3 billion. When completed this will be the end of Shanghai Airlines.
