Aigle Azur orders one A319 direct from Airbus

Aigle Azur (Paris-Orly) has ordered a single new Airbus A319 direct from Airbus. This is the first direct order by Aigle Azur with Airbus. The company currently operates three A319s, three A320s and four A321s. Founded in 1946 it is the oldest privately-owned airline in France.

Flybe to operate four Q400s for Olympic Air

Cebu Pacific increases outstanding A320 orders

Cebu Pacific Air (Manila) has increased its outstanding A320 orders to 15, with a new firm order for five aircraft. Deliveries for the new aircraft will be in 2013. The company currently operates 10 A319s and 11 A320s as well as seven ATR 72-500s.

Vietnam to add eight A321s and two A350 XWBs

Vietnam Airlines (Hanoi) has placed a firm order for 16 additional Airbus A321s (total now 41) and also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for two additional Airbus A350-900 XWBs (total now 12).

Sukhoi (Moscow) has sold 24 Superjet 100s to Avia (Moscow), a leasing company in Russia. So far, Sukhoi is leading the order parade at the Paris Air Show.

Pantheon to operate eight DHC-8-400s (Q400s)

Pantheon Airways (Athens) will operate eight Bombardier DHC-8-400s (Q400s) for the newly-reorganized Olympic Air (3rd) (Athens). MIG Aviation 3 Limited, a subsidiary of the Marfin Investment Group Holdings S.A. of Greece, has signed a firm order for eight DHC-8-400s., including five updated Q400 NextGen airliners. The new airliners will be leased to Pantheon which will operate the aircraft in OA’s updated colors. 

Previously on March 6, 2009, Greece’s Development Minister Kostis Hatzidakis announced the sale of the flight operations and the technical companies to MIG. MIG announced it would assume Olympic Airlines’ ground handling operations.  After 35 years of state control and 10 years of failed sale attempts, Olympic Airlines (previously Olympic Airways) will once again become a private airline and company. MIG also purchased the assets of paper airline Pantheon Airways and some of the assets of Olympic Airlines (2nd) including aircraft, facilities and slots at Brussels, Bucharest, Frankfurt, London Heathrow, New York, Paris and Rome. The sale also included the “Olympic” name and brand including the six rings logo. MIG also acquired the leases of two hangars at Athens and Olympic Airways Services, the cargo unit and other facilities at Athens International Airport for 25 years. MIG has also created Olympic Handling which will handle all ground handling services starting in July.  The new airline, now named Olympic Air (3rd), will begin operations on October 1, 2009.

Vietnam Airlines signs for 2 more ATR 72-500s

Vietnam Airlines (Hanoi) yesterday (June 15) signed a contract for two additional 68-seat ATR 72-212As (ATR 72-500s) bringing the total to 16. At the Paris Air Show the company also accepted its fourth ATR 72-500, the first painted in the 1997 colors.

Ethiopian Airlines acquires its first 737-800

Ethiopian Airlines (Addis Ababa) has acquired its first 160-seat Boeing 737-800. The new airliner is equipped with Blended Winglets. Boeing 737-86R registered ET-ANA (msn 30494) has been leased from ALFAFCO. A second is being negotiated (737-86R, ET-ANB, msn 30495).

Royal Air Maroc signs contract for new ATRs

Royal Air Maroc (Casablanca) today (June 16) signed a previously-announced contract for the purchase of four ATR 72-600s and two ATR 42-600s for its new Royal Air Maroc Express subsidiary. RAM also secured options for two additional ATR 72-600s. Deliveries will start in 2011. In the meantime in order to launch Royal Air Maroc Express, RAM is leasing four ATR 72-200s from ATR. The first, ATR 72-202 CN-COD (msn 483, ex F-WKVC) was accepted on June 12..

Air Nostrum signs contract for 10 ATR 72-600s

Air Nostrum (Iberia Regional) (Valencia) today (June 16) signed a contract for the purchase of 10 70-seat ATR 72-600s, plus options for 10 additional aircraft. Deliveries will start in 2011. The company will use the new type to start replacing its 17 Bombardier DHC-8-300s (Q300s).

Alpine Air Express to pull out of Hawaii

Alpine Air Express (Provo) has decided to pull out of Hawaii after nearly five years. Alpine was unsuccessful in the re-bidding of U.S. Postal Service mail contracts for the islands. The aircraft will be re-deployed to the mainland.

Mauritania Airways (Nouakchott) has wet leased Boeing 737-7L9 TS-IEA (msn 28014) from Tunisair (Tunis). The new type was delivered to Tunisair on May 15, 2009.

KLM Cityhopper (Amsterdam) has converted seven Embraer ERJ 190 options to firm orders for deliveries in the first quarter of 2010. The company still has 11 options. Presently the company is operating four copies and will have 10 in service by the end of the current year. The new aircraft will replace the 15 oldest Fokker F.28 Mk. 0100s (Fokker 100s).

FDA-Fuji Dream Airlines orders an ERJ 175

FDA-Fuji Dream Airlines (Shizuoka) has ordered an 84-seat Embraer ERJ 170-200LR (ERJ 175). The new type will be delivered next year. The new airline already has two smaller  ERJ 170-100STs and is planning to commence operations next month.

MALEV signs LOI for 30 Superjet 100 aircraft

MALEV Hungarian Airlines (Budapest) has signed a Letter of intent (LOI) for 30 Sukhoi Superjet 100 aircraft.  The first deliveries will be in 2011 with six aircraft due every year.

Grand China Express (subsidiary of HNA Group) on June 10, 2009 was relaunched as Tianjin Airlines (Tianjin) with new Embraer ERJ 190s. 20 daily flights are operated. The first flight departed at 0810 for Guiyang and Xi’an. Tianjin Airlines is a joint venture of the HNA Group, Hainan Airlines and the Tianjin Port Free Trade Zone Investment Company.

AviaNova (Moscow-Vnukovo) is a new low-fare Russian airline backed by the Alfa Group (Russia) and Indigo Partners. The new company is planning to launch services later this summer with Airbus A320s. The first, ex-US Airways/America West Airlines Airbus A320-232 N603AW (msn 661), was recently painted at Miami and will become EI-EEI on delivery.

Regional Paraguaya is planning a Gulf Air livery!

Regional Paraguaya (Asuncion) apparently is preparing to adopt a Gulf Air-like color scheme as based on the images on its website. The bird image on the tail is apparently a local bird rather than Gulf Air’s falcon.

Scanderbeg Air (New York-JFK) is a new tour operator that has contracted with Sky King Airlines (Sacramento) to operate an ex-Air China/ABX Air Boeing 767-2J6 ER registered N712AX (msn 23307, ex B-2551) on weekly scheduled charter flights between New York (JFK) and Tirana.  N712AX was delivered to Sky King on June 2.  N712AX is Sky King’s first wide-body airliner.  The first flight for Scanderbeg started on June 12. The company also operates twice-weekly scheduled charter flights on the JFK-Prishtina route  with the same aircraft starting on June 14.  The airliner carries “Scanderbeg” titles and still wears a basic Air China livery with a red logo.
