Axis Airways (New Axis Airways) (www.fly-axis.com) (Marseille) added its first Boeing 737-800 (F-GZZA) in March. With the addition of new type the airline introduced a new livery.

S7 Airlines (Moscow) is expected to become the 11th member of the Oneworld Alliance. The Russian carrier will soon start the integration process. Rival Aeroflot Russian Airlines is a member of the SkyTeam Alliance.

Aegean Airlines to join the Star Alliance

Aegean Airlines (Athens) will join the Star Alliance. The company will soon start the integration process which is expected to take around 12 months. Aegean is expected to become the 26th member.

Amsterdam Airlines (Amsterdam) is revising its font and introducing a new “double A” logo. The new logo consists of two stylized A’s. The two A’s are going around the globe in the new design with slim airfoils capable of flying safely and economically. The A’s are also going up and forward.

Air Sylhet (Akal Air) (Birmingham) ended scheduled operations on April 27, 2009 after flying for less than a month. Operations began on April 4 but many flights ran late or were cancelled with its wet leased Boeing 757-225 TF-LLY (msn 22691).

WestJet and Southwest delay code-share

WestJet Airlines (Calgary) has announced that Southwest Airlines’ (Dallas) progress on the implementation of the code-share program will be delayed. Southwest has decided to re-direct a portion of its resources dedicated to the code-share project towards other near-term revenue opportunities. In other words, WN is more focused right now on increasing sagging revenues.

US Airways to start Charlotte-Rio de Janeiro

US Airways (Phoenix) has now provided additional details on the new Rio service. Daily Philadelphia-Charlotte-Rio de Janeiro Boeing 767-200 service will commence on December 2, 2009 pending final approval from the Brazilian government.

JetAmerica (2nd) to launch on July 13

JetAmerica (2nd) (Toledo) is the latest idea of John Weikle, the founder of defunct Skybus Airlines (3rd) (Columbus, OH). The new paper airline was established on November 26, 2007. JetAmerica will be modeled after ultra low-cost carrier Ryanair that Skybus had also adopted but failed (Spirit Airlines also uses this model). This time Weikle will initially wet lease two 189-seat Boeing 737-800s from Miami Air International and will fly to some cities that will be EAS federally funded. Fares will be 50 to 70 percent lower than major airlines. Toledo (near Detroit and Cleveland) has been selected as the base. Initial routes will span out to South Bend, Lansing, Melbourne/Vero Beach, Newark and Minneapolis/St. Paul. In addition Cincinnati, Columbus, OH and Pittsburgh are being considered for future expansion. Colors will be red, white and blue.

Megantara Air shuts down in Indonesia

Megantara Air (Jakarta) shut down all operations in early May 2009. Cargo operations began in October 2007 on the Jakarta-Singapore route for DHL International with a single Boeing 727-200F (PK-TMA). A 737-200F (PK-TME) was added in September 2007.

Linus Airways ceases operations

Linus Airways (Linus Nusantara) (Jakarta) ceased all operations on April 27, 2009. The regional carrier in Indonesia originally commenced operations on April 1, 2005 with two Boeing 737-200s and had replaced the 737s with two BAe 146-200s (PK-LNI and PK-LNJ) leased from BAe Systems in August 2007.

Airberlin to start Berlin-Tel Aviv flights

Airberlin (Berlin-Tegel) will launch twice-weekly nonstop service between Berlin and Tel Aviv on July 7.

AeroLogic takes delivery of first Boeing 777-FZN

AeroLogic (Leipzig) took delivery of its first (of eight) new Boeing 777-FZN (D-AALA, msn 36001) on May 12 via Deucalion Capital. The new cargo airline is a joint venture between Lufthansa Cargo and DHL Express and is expected to launch operations in the coming weeks.

British posts it largest yearly loss since 1987

British Airways (London) has posted its largest yearly net loss since it was privatized in 1987. The company lost around $532 million for the fiscal year ending on March 31. BA blamed the large loss on high fuel costs earlier in the corporate year and diminished demand. As a result the company will cut capacity by four percent in the winter season compared with a year ago. The airline will also park up to 16 aircraft.

In other news, BA will introduce a new route linking the London (Heathrow) hub with Las Vegas starting on October 25. Boeing 777-200s will be assigned to the new route.

Austral orders 20 Embraer ERJ 190-100ARs

Austral Argentina (Austral Lineas Aereas) (Buenos Aires) has signed a contract for 20 new 96-seat Embraer ERJ 190-100ARs (Advanced Range). The first copy will be delivered in the first quarter of 2010. The AR model has a range of 2,400 nautical miles (4,440 km).

Southwest Airlines is coming to Milwaukee

Southwest Airlines (Dallas) has announced its intention to add Milwaukee in the fall (believed to be on November 1). WN has not disclosed any details on routes or schedules. New York (LGA) (June 28) and Boston (August 16) are also joining the system before MKE. All of these new market opportunities are now possible without the addition of a single aircraft due to WN’s continuous flight schedule optimization process.

Republic to operate two ERJ 190s for Midwest

Republic Airlines (2nd) (subsidiary of Republic Airways) (Indianapolis) will operate two longer-range 100-seat Embraer ERJ 190-100ARs as a Midwest Connect carrier starting in August. Republic already operates 12 smaller 76-seat Embraer ERJ 170 jets for Midwest Airlines (Milwaukee). The move is expected to permit Midwest to restore West Coast nonstop flying from MKE. Midwest is coming under increased competitive pressure from AirTran Airways and soon Southwest Airlines.

Meanwhile Republic is investing another $2 million in partner Mokulele Airlines. Republic has now invested $13 million in the Hawaiian inter-island carrier while it holds a deposit of $2 million.

go! will thankfully not become Aloha (2nd)

go! (subsidiary of Mesa Air Group) (Honolulu) will not become the second version of Aloha Airlines. A U.S. bankruptcy judge (Lloyd King) denied the recommendation of the Aloha Airlines (1st) (Honolulu) bankruptcy trustee to sell the name to investment company Yucaipa.  Yucaipa was intending to license the use of the “Aloha Airlines” name to Mesa Air Group in order for its go! subsidiary to be renamed.  Unions representing the former employees of Aloha objected to the transfer. The judge cited Mesa’s strategy of forcing the original Aloha out of business as a major reason for the denial.

Meanwhile go! lost $2.1 million in the quarter ending on March 31, 2009.  How long will Mesa stay in the Hawaiian market?

jetBlue to add Kingston in the fall

jetBlue Airways (New York-JFK) intends to add Kingston, Jamaica with daily service from New York (JFK) in the fall with 150-seat Airbus A320s. This represents the company’s 14th international destination.

Boeing loses 25 787 Dreamliners on order

Boeing (Chicago and Seattle) has lost another 25 aircraft on order for its delayed 787 Dreamliner. No specific customer was mentioned (Airberlin?). Boeing has now lost 57 orders since January 1 while taking in a new order for eight (net decrease of 49). The company still has 861 posted orders.

American reconfigures 18 Boeing 757-200s

American Airlines (Dallas/Fort Worth) is reconfiguring 18 (of 124) Boeing 757-200s with new interiors featuring 16 next-generation, angled lie-flat seats in a 2-2 seating in Business Class. The Economy section with 166 seats will also receive new seats. The adapted Five Sevens will be assigned to long-range trans-Atlantic and Latin American routes. The first flight was on May 7 between New York (JFK) and Brussels.

Cimber Sterling (Copenhagen) has painted the first Boeing 737 in the new colors. Cimber Air acquired some of the assets of Sterling Airlines in January 2009 including the AOC, aircraft and domain web addresses. It has been operating the former Sterling aircraft (mainly in Sterling.com titles). This new airline will replace defunct Sterling Airlines.

Ryanair wins its way at Weeze (Dusseldorf)

Ryanair (Dublin) under the threat of leaving, has won concessions from the airport operator and will retain its Weeze (near Dusseldorf) base. The carrier bases six Boeing 737-800s at the secondary airport.

Alaska Airlines to add Houston and Atlanta

Alaska Airlines (Seattle/Tacoma) will add Houston (Bush Intercontinental) and the SEA-IAH route on September 23 according to Airline Route Updates.  It will also add Atlanta and SEA-ATL nonstop route on October 23. The company will add Hawaiian service from Oakland to both Kahului (Maui) (four times weekly, November 9) and Kona (Hawaii) (three times weekly, November 10).

AirTran launches Milwaukee-MSP service

WestJet (Calgary) yesterday (May 4) started daily nonstop flights between Edmonton and Yellowknife with Boeing 737s. The flights are are seasonal for the summer.

The company also added seasonal service between Toronto and Sydney, NS on May 5.

In other news the company yesterday moved into its new 322,000 square foot headquarters next to its hangar at Calgary International Airport. Previously the company was spread over seven separate buildings in the northeast section of the city.

Locair to start Cincinnati and Dulles service

Locair (Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood) will launch a new route from Lake Cumberland Regional Airport (Somerset, KY) to Cincinnati on May 21 and also to Washington (Dulles) on June 8 with Fairchild Swearingen Metroliners. This is in addition to already existing Somerset-Nashville service and operations in South Florida and the Bahamas.

Capt. Gopinath starts Deccan Cargo Express

Deccan Cargo Express Logistics-Deccan 360 (Nagpur) is a new all-cargo airline created by Captain G. R. Gopinath, the founder of low-cost Air Deccan, which is now merged into Kingfisher. The new airline is acquiring three ex-Air India A310-300 converted freighters (A310-324 VT-AIN, msn 684 is the first) and three ex-Air Deccan ATR 42 converted freighters (eventually going to six). Operations are due to start as Deccan 360 on May 27 to Dubai, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Hong Kong.

Boeing (Chicago and Seattle) yesterday (May 3) rolled out the first Boeing 787 Dreamliner  (N787BA, designated ZA001) to the Everett flight line. Fuel testing will begin in the next few days at PAE. The new type is due to fly for the first time later this quarter.

US Airways (Phoenix) is joining a growing list of carriers cutting service to Mexican cities.  US is temporarily reducing flights to the following cities between May 10 and July 1: Acapulco, Cabo (Los Cabos), Cancun, Cozumel, Guadalajara, Guaymas, Hermosillo, Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo, Manzanillo, Mazatlan, Mexico City and Puerto Vallarta. This amounts to a reduction of 38 percent.

Air Pacific (Nadi) today (May 2) has suspended the Nadi-Gold Coast route due to a drop off in demand. The carrier will continue to serve the region through Brisbane.

HNA Group reduces Embraer ERJ 145 order

Hainan Airline Company Ltd. (HNA Group) has reached agreement with Embraer to reduce its order for 50 50-seat Embraer ERJ 145 regional jets to only 25. So far 12 have been delivered.

Emirates upgrades LAX and SFO to daily flights

Emirates Airline (Dubai) yesterday (May 1) upgraded both the Los Angeles and San Francisco routes to daily service after the carrier received additional Boeing 777-200 LR aircraft.

On April 30 the company received its 75th Boeing 777 aircraft (777-31H A6-ECQ msn 35588).

Air Canada Jazz (Halifax) yesterday as planned started a new daily seasonal Bombardier CRJ200 regional jet route between the Toronto hub and Sydney (Nova Scotia).

United to reduce service to Mexico

United Airlines (Chicago) is joining a growing list of carriers temporarily reducing the number of flights to Mexico due to the Swine Flu outbreak as demand drops off. Beginning May 5, UA will reduce the number of weekly flights to Mexico from 61 to 24 in May and 90 to 52 in June. The company will continue to serve its four destinations in Mexico. However can some of the smaller Mexican carriers survive this tremendous drop in demand for travel?

Sun Country starts MSP-Boston service

Sun Country Airlines (Minneapolis/St. Paul) yesterday (May 1) inaugurated nonstop service between the MSP hub and Boston. BOS becomes the 26th destination for the carrier from MSP.

Spirit starts Boston-Atlantic City flights

Spirit Airlines (Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood) today (May 2) will start linking Boston with Atlantic City with Airbus A319s. Introductory fares will start at $9 one-way.
