AirTran Airways (Orlando and Atlanta) will add new service to Allentown/Bethlehem/Easton (Lehigh Valley) (ABE), its 62nd destination, on June 25 with nonstop service to both Orlando and Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood.

West Air Europe (Gothenburg) and Atlantic Airlines (Coventry) announced in October 2008 they would merge to form West Atlantic Airlines (Gothenburg). ATP G-BTPH (msn 2015) now spots new titles and logo.

Boeing to help Russian Airlines to find credit

Russian Airlines (Moscow), the new state-owned airline group replacing the failed AirUnion, is receiving help from Boeing to find credit so it can place a large aircraft order. AeroMexico Connect (Monterrey) will start service between the Mexico City hub and New Orleans on July 6 with 50-seat Embraer ERJ 145s. The new route will be operated six times a week.

FedEx Express (Memphis) on April 6 retired its last unconverted McDonnell Douglas DC-10. DC-10-30F N315FE (msn 48313) was the last to be retired. The company has previously converted and upgraded 51 DC-10s to the two-person cockpit crewed MD-10s with the new glass cockpits.

Continental Airlines (Houston) has received tentative antitrust immunity from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for its membership in the Star Alliance. Subject to a final determination, this clears the way for Continental to join with United, Air Canada and Lufthansa to proceed with the “Atlantic Plus-Plus” plan to organize trans-Atlantic capacity, marketing, sales and revenue sharing.

El Al Israel Airlines (Tel Aviv) will add the Tel Aviv-London (Luton) route (six times weekly) on May 3. The flag carrier will assign Boeing 767s to the route.

LAN Ecuador starts domestic operations

LAN Airlines Ecuador (Quito) on April 6 commenced domestic operations. The first route was between Quito and Guayaquil with seven daily roundtrips using Airbus A318s. Cuenca and the Galapagos Islands will soon be added. The subsidiary of LAN Airlines (Santiago) started international operations on April 28, 2003.

Southwest Airlines (Dallas) has now released the details of its new New York (LGA) service. Flights will begin on June 28 with five daily roundtrips to Chicago (Midway) and three daily roundtrips to Baltimore/Washington (BWI).

Quantum Air (formerly AeBal) (Palma de Mallorca and Madrid) has now painted its second Boeing 717 with the new brand. Boeing 717-2CM EC-HOA was painted first in March and is now based at Barcelona.

Spantax (Gran Canaria) was a long-time Convair 990 operator. The airline failed on March 29, 1988. One of its Convair 990s, namely 990-30A-5 EC-BZO (msn 30-10-30), has been in open storage at Palma de Mallorca for the past 22 years. Its condition is now getting poor. Flybe (Exeter) will make Gatwick Airport near London its 14th base with its new route from LGW to Dusseldorf starting on June 22. The new route will be operated three times a week. The airline will be operating nearly 50 flights a week from LGW for the summer of 2009.

L’Avion (Paris-Orly) yesterday (April 4) was officially merged into OpenSkies (London) (British Airways) even though F-HAVN still remains to be painted in OpenSkies colors. The division flies from Orly to both JFK and Newark in the New York area.

Tiger Airways (Australia) (tigerairways.com) (subsidiary of Tiger Airways Singapore) (Melbourne) will launch the prestigious Melbourne-Sydney route on July 3 with four daily roundtrips. This is bound to create a new fare war as the existing carriers will move to protect this lucrative route. Tiger will offer a A$68 one-way fare between the two cities.

QANTAS Airways (Sydney) has announced it will increase its share in Jetstar Asia (Singapore) and Valuair (Singapore) from 45 percent to 49 percent through a new holding company (Newstar). Choo Teck Wong, a businessman in Singapore, will hold the remaining 51 percent through his holding company (Westbrook).

Qatar Airways (Doha) is expected to place another aircraft order in June at the Paris Air Show according to a report in The National newspaper of Abu Dhabi. The fast-growing flag carrier also expects to average around seven new destinations a year over the next five years. Qatar has just signed a new code-sharing agreement with US Airways. A new international airport is being built in Doha, due to open in 2011.

Air Wisconsin (Air Wisconsin Airlines Corporation) (US Airways Express) (Appleton) announced yesterday its has completed its 1,000,000th revenue flight with its 50-seat Bombardier CRJ200 (CL-600-2B19) fleet. Air Wisconsin operates 70 CRJ200s for US Airways.

British Airways (London) has sold its 11 remaining Boeing 757-200s for freighter conversion. The type will be phased out in 2012. This sale does not affect the four 757s assigned to OpenSkies.

Aegean Airlines (Athens) and Olympic Airlines (Athens) today are facing a long day of country-wide general strikes in Greece including the air traffic controllers. Aegean has already cancelled 50 flights and Olympic has cancelled 140 flights. The workers are protesting low wages and job cuts.

ASA (Atlantic Southeast Airlines) (Delta Connection) (subsidiary of SkyWest) (Atlanta) on March 31 grounded its 60 Bombardier CRJ200 regional jets after an internal audit discovered it may have missed some critical engine inspections. ASA serves 111 airports in 30 states. The fleet is gradually being returned to service.

Delta Air Lines (Atlanta) on March 30 rolled out at Atlanta its first SkyTeam logojet. Boeing 767-432 ER N844MH (msn 29717) went promptly into service as flight DL 176 to Dublin on the same day. Each SkyTeam member is expected to have a SkyTeam plane painted by the end of the year.
