Safi Airways (Kabul) will add its first route to Europe on June 15 when it launches three flights between Kabul and Frankfurt with Boeing 767-200 equipment.

Centrafrique Air Express (Brazzaville) lost a Boeing 737 (believed to be 737-268 TL-ADR, msn 21281) yesterday (April 29) on a cargo flight between Brazzaville and Harare. The airliner crashed about 140 nautical miles southeast of Brazzaville near the village of Massamba in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Three crew members were killed.
Royal Air Maroc’s (Casablanca) Boeing 767-36N ER CN-RNT (msn 30843) operating as flight AT 42 from Casablanca to New York (JFK) apparently made a hard landing at JFK on April 20 according to The Aviation Herald. Here is the link for further information:
JetBlue Airways (New York-JFK) is planning to add the New York (JFK)-St. Lucia route in the fall subject to government approvals.
Continental Airlines (Houston) will resume seasonal service on the Newark-Athens route on May 2 running through September 7, 2009. The route will be assigned to the Boeing 767-200 ER.

REX-Regional Express Airlines (Wagga Wagga) will retire its last Fairchild Swearingen Metro 3 freighter on May 29. The company now has three dedicated SAAB 340 freighters to replace the Metros.

Biman Bangladesh Airlines (Dhaka) will lease two Boeing 777-200s from Cathay Pacific Airways (Hong Kong) and two 777-200s from SIngapore Airlines (Singapore) as an interim measure. The lease will be for three years with the first delivery in either May or June 2009. This will permit the company to phase out its four old McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30s. The flag carrier has four new 463-seat Boeing 777-300 ERs on order (the first is due in July 2013) as well as four 787-8 Dreamliners.
Norwegian Air Shuttle (Norwegian.no and Norwegian.com) (Oslo-Fornebu) is equipping its entire fleet with high speed in-flight broadband from Row 44. It will be the first European airline to equip its entire fleet with high-speed broadband. The company serves 84 destination across Europe.

Porter Airlines (Toronto-City Centre) is investing $45 million (Canadian) in a new 150,000 square foot passenger terminal at City Centre Airport in downtown Toronto. Phase 1 opens in November 2009. The full facility, including 10 bridged gates, customs, and two passenger lounges, will be complete by the spring of 2010.
In other news, the company is looking at the golfing and beach resort of Myrtle Beach, SC as a possible new destination.
Four Star Air Cargo (San Juan) lost its venerable Douglas DC-3C N136FS (msn 10267) on April 26 as it was taxiing out for departure at San Juan (SJU) for St. Thomas. A cockpit fire gutted the freighter’s cockpit and the aircraft is an insurance write off (WO).

American Airlines (Dallas/Fort Worth) has officially unveiled its first Oneworld Alliance logojet – confirming Boeing 777-223 ER N791AN (msn 30254) is the aircraft. By the end of the third quarter AA intends to have three other aircraft (one additional 777, one 767 and one 757) painted in the alliance motif. All 10 members are painting aircraft in the same livery which retains the airline’s tail markings. More than 40 aircraft will feature this design.

KTHY-Kibris Turk Hava Yollari (Ercan) has introduced a new color scheme and also changed it brand name to Cyprus Turkish Airlines. With the new livery, the company has removed the previous large “KTHY” titles.

AirArabia Maroc (Regional Air Lines) (airarabia.com) (Casablanca) will commence operations on May 6 between Casablanca and London (Stansted) with Airbus A320s. The first new one (A320-214 CN-NMA, msn 3809) was delivered today. The second A320 is being prepared at Shannon.
The new airline will also add Casablanca to Marseille (May 8), Charleroi (Brussels) (May 10), Bergamo (Milan) (May 12), Lyon (May 14) and Paris (CDG) (May 16).
AirEuropa (AirEuropa.com) (Palma de Mallorca) will inaugurate a weekly flight between Tenerife (North) (Canary Islands) and Miami on June 20.
Czech Airlines-CSA (Prague) will add a new Airbus A319 route connecting the Prague hub with Novosibirsk in central Russia starting on April 28. The new route will be operated twice a week. Czech is adding new routes to Russia.
Condor (Frankfurt) has started adding Aviation Partners Boeing Blended Winglets to its nine Boeing 767-300s. The work is being performed by Ameco Beijing.
Air Canada’s (Montreal) flight AC 34 from Sydney to Vancouver with Boeing 777-233 LR C-FIUJ (msn 35244) diverted yesterday to Honolulu after encountering turbulence one hour east of HNL. Nine passengers and two crew members were treated for minor injuries.
Virgin America (San Francisco) will start San Francisco-Orange County (Santa Ana) service on April 29.
Delta Air Lines (Atlanta) will return to Dallas’ Love Field on July 6, 2009 through Pinnacle Airlines (Delta Connection) (Memphis) which begins flying three daily roundtrips with Bombardier CRJ200 regional jets. Pinnacle will connect DAL with the MEM hub.
American Airlines (Dallas/Fort Worth) has painted its first oneworld logojet (believed to be Boeing 777-223 ER N791AN, msn 30254). Confirmation and photos are always welcome. AA is due to paint two 777s, one 767-300 and one 757-200 in the alliance scheme.
Alaska Airlines (Seattle/Tacoma) has converted four Boeing 737-800 options.
AirAsia X (AirAsia.com) (Kuala Lumpur) on July 1 will start a new route linking Kuala Lumpur with Taipei. It will operate five weekly flights.
MALEV Hungarian Airlines (Budapest) returned to St. Petersburg (Pulkovo) yesterday with twice-weekly flights. The company launched its first service between the two cities in 1970 and had operated on the route for 30 years until service was suspended.

Lufthansa (Frankfurt) has decided to park its Airbus A300-600s on June 30, 2009 due to the decline in demand.
Jetbird (www.flyjetbird.com) (Cologne) is planning to launch its on-demand private jet service with Phenom 100 jets in September 2009. The company describes itself as “the pan-European Private jet airline”. The company will launch operations with four aircraft but intends to have 10 by the end of 2009.
JetBlue Airways (New York-JFK) will add Boston-Baltimore/Washington (Thurgood Marsall) service on September 9 with four daily flights. The company is also planning a new international route from New York (JFK) to Bridgetown, Barbados on October 1, 2009, subject to government approvals.
Biman Bangladesh Airlines (Dhaka) will add twice-weekly service to Tripoli and Guangzhou in May.
Ryanair (Dublin) is threatening to close the Weeze (near Dusseldorf) base on April 29 if a German court does not overturn the airport’s decision to restrict the operating hours. The company bases six Boeing 737-800s at Weeze.
US Airways (US Airways Group) (Phoenix) reported a first quarter net loss of $103 million, down from a net loss of $237 million in the same period a year ago.
jetBlue Airways (New York-JFK) reported net income of $12 million in the first quarter, its first profitable first quarter in four years.
Boeing (Chicago, Seattle and Wichita) reported first quarter net income of $600 million.
Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air (Alaska Air Group) (Seattle/Tacoma) reported a net loss, excluding special items, of $25.4 million for the first quarter. This is an improvement from a net loss of $37.7 million in the same quarter a year ago.
Avanti Air (Burbach) is now operating its ATR 72-202 D-ANFC (msn 237) for broker and travel agency flyonair.it (Pescara) effective April 20. The airliner has been painted in full flyonair.it colors and is being operated under an ACMI contract. D-ANFC is operating from Pescara to Catania, Milan (Malpensa), Naples, Olbia, Palermo and Turin (Turino).

SATA International (Ponta Delgada) has introduced a new color scheme with the introduction of its latest Airbus A320. The company has also introduced a new “The Atlantic and You” slogan.
Gulf Air (Bahrain) has decided to not pursue the dry lease option for the “foreseeable future” for the leased Jet Airways Boeing 777-300 ERs due to current economic situation. Under the original agreement Jet Airways agreed to operate the four Triple Sevens under a wet lease agreement for the first six months. After that period Gulf Air had the option to dry lease (operate) the aircraft but this will not happen at this time. Therefore the 777s will be returned around September 2009.
Swiss International Air Lines (Zurich) took delivery of its first (of nine) new 236-seat Airbus A330-343X registered HB-JHA (msn 1000, ex F-WWYX) on April 15. The first of the new type is named “Schwyz” after the central Swiss town. HB-JHA entered revenue service on April 20 on flights 14/15 between Zurich and New York (JFK). Eventually the newer A330-300s will replace the existing A330-200 fleet through 2011.
Aer Lingus (Dublin) on April 20 added three more routes from London Gatwick – to Munich, Nice and Venice. Flights from LGW to Malaga and Knock were launched previously on April 6. The final additions will come on April 26 from LGW to Faro and Zurich.
US Airways (Phoenix) yesterday restored after a eight-year hiatus the Charlotte-Paris (CDG) route. The route will be flown with Boeing 767-200s.
United Airlines (UAL Corporation) (Chicago) reported a first quarter net loss of $579 million excluding non-cash, net mark-to-market hedge gains and certain accounting charges.

Continental Airlines (Houston) reported a net loss of $136 million in the first quarter.
The company is also expected to assign the Boeing 737-900 ER to the Los Angeles-Kahului (Maui) and the Los Angeles-Honolulu routes.
Delta Air Lines (Atlanta) in order to improve profitability of its cargo operation, will retire its 14 Northwest Cargo Boeing 747-200Fs on December 31, 2009. These 14 aircraft will not be repainted.
On the financial side, the company reported a net loss for the first quarter of $693 million, excluding special items. Excluding $684 million in realized fuel hedge losses and special items, DL’s results were basically break even. However DL’s reported net loss for the quarter is $794 million.
Delta completed the merger with Northwest Airlines on October 29, 2008. However their are still two air operators certificates (AOCs). The company is on track to have a single operating AOC by the end of 2009. When this occurs, this will be the technical end of Northwest Airlines-NWA.
Arrow Cargo (Miami) has wet leased two McDonnell Douglas MD-11F freighters from World Airways (Atlanta). One is already is in service and a second will be operated from July through December 2009. The aircraft are expected to be operated in World colors.
